Andy Williams & Sammy Davis Jr. - Voice and Percussion Medley (1963)

Musical brilliance and artistry are on display as Andy Williams and Sammy Davis Jr. execute a seven-and-a-half-minute medley of pop and jazz standards, accompanied during the first half solely by percussion instruments -- no piano or other tonal instrument to help keep them in tune. Despite moving through nine varying songs without tonal accompaniment for over four minutes, even changing keys and rhythms, they remain perfectly on pitch when the rest of the band comes in at 4:35. Williams' musical director, Dave Grusin, once said, "You're takin' a chance when you do that, especially when you do that live!" No autotune needed for these phenomenal artists. Their brilliance was not only that they could do this, but that they also could make it look effortless. ("The Andy Williams Show," 3/24/63)

Your description says it all so well. It was great to see this medley - and yes, what a fabulous moment it was indeed when Sammy and Andy were precisely on pitch when the rest of the band came in at 4:35 ! Two superb, true artists. Thanks for posting this. I'm sure I'll rewatch it many times.

I wonder if either or both had perfect pitch - that could explain how they managed to be pitch perfect when the orchestra entered? If not they were living dangerously especially during a live performance (presumably they would have rehearsed this beforehand so would've been confident they could pull it off).

Whoever thought up this routine deserves a medal. Two giants at the peak of their musical power singing live accompanied only by 6 percussion instruments. Gosh. Only 1,500 views. What's become of us?

Thank you! Really appreciate it and have updated the song list. Interesting to hear previous versions of these songs (several of #5 but only one thus far of #6).

I never liked Andy Williams too much. I never connected with his voice. It was a great voice, but for me, the equivalent to a news anchor’s voice-devoid of character. Sammy was always to ‘show-bizzy’ for me.

Way to pretty much indict your own limited musical acumen. Live and learn. Should have probably spoken to an attorney before opening your mouth.

@@Djm8520 Musical taste is indeed subjective; but it can also be objectively evaluated and measured. William's objective record speaks for itself. Having also attended law school (but not a lawyer) I more than many fully appreciate the value of losing your conversing privileges. Thank you. If only more Americans could be as fortunate.
