Andy Goldsworthy - Earth Artist and his Process

A short documentary created for educational purposes to teach my classes about Andy Goldsworthy and his artistic process.
Andy Goldsworthy is a British artist known for his site-specific installations involving natural materials and the passage of time. Working as both sculptor and photographer, Goldsworthy crafts his installations out of rocks, ice, leaves, or branches, cognizant that the landscape will change, then carefully documents the ephemeral collaborations with nature through photography. “It's not about art,” he has explained. “It's just about life and the need to understand that a lot of things in life do not last.”
This video was created for educational purposes only and will not be used for any sort of profit. It falls within the classroom exemption {(17 U.S.C. @110(1)) and the fair use exemption (17 U.S.C.@107). All rights belong to the respective copyright owner.

Some years ago Andy was exhibiting in the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh where my son Mark Parry worked as a graphic designer. One day Mark rang to say ‘ Guess what! I’m careering round Edinburgh in a van with Andy Goldsworthy’. Mark bought Andy’s beautiful books for me. My much loved son died 16 years ago . Andy will probably not remember that time when they were both young and enjoying life but it is a precious memory for me. Thanks to Mark I got to know Andy’s inspired works of art.

I was living in south-west Scotland when I first heard of Andy Goldsworthy. It explained why we kept coming across odd made things when we went out walking in the area. Up to that point we would add to the pieces if they were partially decayed, inspired by the beauty. Once it was clear that the decay is part of the process we left them. And I will always remember the hugely long, meandering white line we made over several hours with the white-striped stones on a beach in Kirkcudbrightshire. Only to discover later that Goldworthy did too.

I never knew about this wonderful artist , until a friend and I found ourselves at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall one night . I was more interested in looking at the programme for the musical events at the hall . Until the movie documentary started . Then inwas enthralled by this mans creations. Working with nature and knowing that the creations do not last . They are temporary . I loved what I saw.

Thank you so much for creating this! I have been teaching my 6th grade art students about him for 10 years now and have been showing various clips from Rivers and Tides, which is clumsy and time consuming. You have beautifully put together all of the things I want my students to see in a reasonable amount of time for the classroom!

I saw a book of Andy´s work some decades ago...now I remembered him and saw this video. What can I say...his work can not be understood by words..it´s the language of God, the creator. Thank you, Andy, for listening to His voice.

I did a piece, inspired, in part, by this man. I took photos of the piece after I made it, and a photo some days after the piece merged somewhat back into the environment.

Spectacular artist. Public speaker? Not so much. His atrocious blathering “art-speak” does him, and his work, a tragic disservice. Stop speaking like an art college grad desperately trying to impress their colleagues, and start speaking like a rational, level-headed adult talking to a grownup or friend whose intelligence you respect.
