He was an excellent RL player, best of his generation. By the time he came to RU he was over 30 and he didn't make any appearances due to injuries and a car crash until the next year. Saracens saw him as a flanker and England saw him as a centre (sounds familiar, think of another RL convert who had similar issues). He eventually got 8 RU caps and although he didn't by any means disgrace himself he was too old to make the impact some hoped. Anyway, it's obvious that his RU career has blossomed as a coach, looking at how well Ireland are going.

Well written Peter. Ref him being the GOAT (in the early super league era) I would say he is as one of the goats but not the goat. You have Rob Burrow, Kev Sinfield, Bobbie Goulding, Paul Sculthorpe, One of the things that stand out for me (btw I don’t support Leeds Wigan or saints I merely mentioned others in Super Leagues early days) is when he shattered his nose and he came back on and played the on. That still is one of the bravest things I’ve seen a rugby (both codes) player do

Andy Farrell did OK. Came to Union too late and the transition isn’t easy. Tough era for England post-2003...

Great player in RL The RFU spent loads to bring him to RU messed with his position at club level Never really clicked in the England setup But what a coach he has turned into and so humble with it , can see why his guys love playing under him

Oh my god I remember this. I toted a TV to work to watch it. Farrell did ok but his transition was too late in his career to have much of an impact. This game I remember mainly because it was a 2nd coming for Robinson and Wilkinson, 2 guys who had been sorely missed at international level. Shame Wilkinson's 'try' wasn't here.

Amazing that his legs had gone at Wigan, they were looking to offload and was just about finished in top level RL.... yet walked into the England RU team. However in his prime he was probably the best English Rugby player of his generation and is probably 3 or 4 times better in ever aspect than his son.

It was a ridiculous selection though. Do you remember he didn't fit into any particular position as none of his skill set were distinct enough. I think he was playing back row for his club when he played this game. Walked in? I think not. England were floundering and looking for leaders during that period that's why he got a call. Didn't last too long thankfully.

Owen Farrell gets an undue amount of disrespect from fans, you don’t get over 100 caps for England at only 32 if you’re anything less than an elite level player given the size of their player pool when compared to say my country, Ireland. I’m a bit too young to remember Andy’s league career and only really seen him play a few games in Union, no doubt a generational talent but so is his son. What Andy definitely has over Owen though is pure size, he was even built like a brick shithouse at 16 years old when he made his debut lol.

Split the field with him on one side and Wilkinson on the other. England played well with Catt doing a similar job at times. It was always a positive when they had a second kicker/distributor at 12 and Wilkinson didn't need to be hidden when defending.

A few little factoids for you. Andy Farrell had a very dodgy knee by 2016 and had been moved to prop at Wigan due to loss of pace. He was well past his best. Then Union offered him big £££ and after a handful of games (less than 10?) he was playing centre for England in a sport he barely knew (entirely the wrong position for him btw, Sarries tried to tell Ashton but he didn't listen). He may have been 'trash' in your eyes but he walked into the England camp at 31 years old and has made a killing in RU ever since. Laugh it up, fuzzball :)
