Superb. I remember a chance in the game against Arsenal at OT in '99, it was hammering it down, the ball was played into him by Becks, the chance didn't look possible with his back to goal, but his quick turn off the shoulder of Bould was brilliant. It's a shame Seaman saved his shot, but at least he was rewarded with an equalising header from Phil Neville's cross after again peeling off Bould. That's just the first example I thought of when I read your comment, and it wasn't even a goal. Top, top player.

Football physically was so different back then. If you had a time machine and bought United's 1998/99 team, to the present to face City's 2024 team (under modern day rules), they would likely struggle to adapt, get a ton of cards and get beat. They'd probably have to forfeit for having that many players sent off 😏. However, if you went back in the past and brought City's 2024 team to face United in 98/99, City would likely get battered. If City didn't get battered in scoreline, they'd get battered in person. Just imagine footballers like Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Bernado Silva taking a clattering from Roy Keane 😳. The referee ain't going to help you. Your own supporters will be telling you get up and calling you a "soft shite." 😂 Football featured intimidation tactics as frequently as boxing or fighting back then. It was known as a proper 'man's game back then, with frequent heated aggression from both the players and the fans. In conclusion, it's pointless to compare eras. Things change. Nothing stays the same. Whether it's the physicality, the rules, VAR, formations, tactics, pitch maintenance, boots, or the ball itself. Players of the past set the benchmark for players in the present. Players in the present will ultimately set the benchmark for players in the future. Some records/accolades may persist for decades, but sooner or later they'll be broken, because nothing stays the same forever. 🤷🏻‍♂️

U underestimate the ol' united teams. They were the first English team to have false 9s (yeah, pep didn't invent them), the team adapted instantly, they were gegenpressing before it was even a thing. In football there's no such thing as "struggle to adapt", in most games it's about the beauty of the game, for top teams, it's results, United will 100% come out with a result and even outplay city bc that's the set of players united had back then. Rinus michel's positional system was first derived from a Scottish man's tactics. There's no such thing as "Struggle to adapt", if u have world class players with world class attitude, then you'll just have to adapt, is the exact reason they've had long-long careers in the game.

Andy Cole what an under appreciated legend, as far as I'm concerned any list of top strikers in PL history that doesn't include his name isn't worth the piece of paper it's written on.

England had lots of top strikers around about the time of Euro 96: Alan Shearer, Ian Wright, Teddy Sheringham, Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand and Andy Cole. Peter Beardsley was also still going well at Newcastle and then there were the maverick talents like Le Tissier and Collymore as well. I don’t know whether Cole was really disrespected or not but anyone would find it hard to get to the top of that list. Shearer was the best all-round striker, Sheringham was probably the smartest and most unselfish, Wright was possibly the most electric, Fowler the coolest finisher (with both feet and his head), Ferdinand had the pace and power and arial ability. I always liked the way Cole finished so calmly and he did have a bit of everything in his game. I don’t think it’s disrespectful to consider him one of the best of his era, there were just a lot of top strikers around.

Haaland is probably the best stinker in the world. Cole was a great player but not even the best in his country. Without naming foreign players Shearer, Owen, Fowler Ferdinand all scored more goals than him with the exception of 93

Swear some of these older players forget how slow the game was when they played. Half that Man United side went out drinking every weekend. Players in this modern era are absolute machines and would run the previous era of players into the ground.
