*Yes* , iPhone is at *80* *Hz* most of the time. This is because Apple intentionally limited the refresh rate to 80 Hz when your scroll reaches a specific speed. They think when your scroll is so fast, all that your eyes can catch is blur, so 120 Hz is unnecessary (which I doubt). I tested it with a slo-mo camera, and it's proven by Craig.

Your eyes can see well over 80hz. Your eyes see upwards of 560 megabits and you can see the difference between FPS upwards of 250 FPS. iPhone does go to 120hz but only when needed. When scrolling your homepage it is at 80hz and it goes up to 90 and beyond when you open different apps. Instagram goes to 120 Hz and so does KZread and TikTok. It plays most games at 90-100hz because it can't process Minecraft and other heavy games smoothly past that. It stops at 70fps on medium graphics for most games and goes to 60 FPS on max graphics. Good phone all around. Google pixel 6 is still better despite being 2 years old but iPhone is much more popular to the masses thanks to marketing

Might be due to what's being displayed. The android screen was showing black and white individual app icons, while the iPhone was displaying colored grouped icons.
To clarify, apple uses 90hz and clocks its screens up during scrolling or other tasks that involve heavy screen flickering, light or movement change, so in contrast, most android flagships dont really do that, but Apple decided to declare their phones 120hz, because technically they are, but not always.

@@liannebleh The animations are longer to supposedly add to the UX. Scrolling is also different; both Android and iOS run 120Hz, but there’s relatively less motion on iOS, say when you scroll through text. iOS likes clocking the display lower than 120Hz, I assume for power saving reasons. During the unveiling of ProMotion in iPhone, they did say that they're dynamically adjusting the refresh rate in such a way that you won't notice the change. Absolutely true. The scrolling on iPhone pro models right now is not as good as some Android phones. That may be due to animation speed to some extent, but there's more to it.
Maybe it's because the touch responsiveness is better?

iPhone fan boy here, (generally prefer android tablets and windows pc) when we’re talking about Phone “feeling” smoother it’s usually referring to how responsive the screen is. Like I could easily swipe home and to different apps repeatedly with accuracy no hickups or screen flashing, or typing without any mistypes because the predictive text will just work. In my experience androids just aren’t as responsive to those kinds of swapping between apps quickly or writing long form without stress. Granted the first android I had recently was a ZFold 5, but even then with the 120hz screen I’d have to double tap or even triple tap sometimes just to type the right thing or get an app to do what I needed.
I completely feel the same way when I switched

My brother in Christ....that is an optimisation thing which most Androids also have. It is to avoid wasting battery life for performing at 120 hz. 90hz is solid enough for simple home screen viewing. 120 hz is probably reserved for more visually-focused activities like gaming, video-watching etc. Although I don't think there is an option to turn this off in the ios
@kadenbirch
6 ай бұрын
It has more to do with android having much faster snappier animations where iPhones animations are slower. On a lower refresh rate like 60 this makes the iPhone feel smoother, but at 120hz it makes it feel slow and sluggish. You'd think that they would prioritize the 120hz for games, but it's actually the opposite, the best place to show off high refresh rate is when scrolling or on the home screen as it makes the whole phone feel snappy and these are relatively low performance scenarios, whereas in most game the phone isn't capable or optimized to run at 120hz since a game is a more performance demanding scenario
@tanishdesai7652
6 ай бұрын
@@kadenbirchI see what you are talking about. It may be right, after all, a user spends most of their time on the homescreen or on low-performance apps like social media apps, so prioritising animations in such areas makes the phone look better.
@PKM1010
5 ай бұрын
The optimisation is dynamic refresh rate, I think Iphones Pro have it too, I don't see why they would limit animations to 90 because the system is one of the few things that can run in 120, YT and videos will always run at like 60fps or less
I experienced it with my android phone and ipad. I think the problem is promotion, it feels like it is slow to catch up to 120hz.
i notice that too, when i compared mine 15 pro max to s 24 ultra , last one was so much smoother, I genuinely think that iphone runs at 80- 90 fps
Thank you for mentioning this. Coming from my Samsung S22 and scrolling through the settings menu of an iPhone 14 Pro Max this was the first thing I noticed. Scrolling felt choppy compared to my S22. After further research I figured that starting a screen recording on the iPhone would force 120Hz at all times and after starting one it felt as smooth as my Samsung. Without the screen recording it indeed must be running at 80-90Hz. I guess I'll be sticking to my much smoother S22 for now.

Wrong- the iPhone genuinely renders at a lower rate. It’s been a bug since iOS 16 (also at the launch of iOS 15). When you scroll very slowly, the display stays at 120Hz, then drops to 80Hz if you scroll fast. The actual FPS goes as low as 70 while scrolling fast. If you don’t believe that, then turn screen recording on and scroll fast through an app. Android however, stays at 120Hz regardless of scroll speed and only lowers the rate if you don’t touch the display.
I just switched from iPhone to Z flip 4 and I am never going back to apple. This phone is soooo much smoother and the apps seem to be way better done than their iOS counterparts. Apple should be ashamed of their price tags.

I predicted this years ago. IOS has been smooth and consistent mostly because of the way most scrolling speed and animations have been slowed down. Whereas Android, given its laggy experience in the past, has been improving its software at the same time maintaining that fast scroll speeds and animations. It's obvious now that they've finally achieved this, giving you the overall faster yet smooth experience.
