Andrew Scott on why the queerness of 'Ripley' isn't so black-and-white

"There's something that's so enduring about this character," Andrew Scott says of the classic queer-coded conman Tom Ripley, "and I think it's because we have so many questions about him."
With his leading role in 'Ripley'-Netflix’s adaptation of the 1955 novel ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley,’ Scott weighs in on the iconic character's long-debated sexuality and shares why he thinks the conman is more fun to watch the less we know about him: "[To] reduce the character by answering too many of those questions is actually a crime in itself."

Fucking great series and Andrew is simply riveting. I actually had to walk away a couple times as his performance and the script made me so nervous. Such a beautiful slow burn and the long format was perfect.

This series is a sincere work of art. From stunning cinematography, visual composition, the locations, the B&W tone (briefly in color when he arrives in Italy) to the script story breakdown to the perfromances. The story is a very slow burn, but it's methodical, nerve wracking and quite intelligent in how Ripley's cunningness unravels. Andrew's Ripley is stunning. You can't keep your eyes off of him. Also, Dakota Fanning is wonderful. A burning, yet delicate presence in this story.

agreed. I can see why producers and filmmakers use British actors . They are just better in conveying a complex character

Ridley in this portrayal felt like other/queer pointing towards an asexual expression so not understood even in society today. Admittedly, he was so blank that any number of possibilities to understand him could be valid.

I'm in the middle of watching it now, and I too think that Ripley is a blank canvas in a similar way to Patrick Batemen in American Psycho when he takes off his facemask and says he is "simply not there". Purposefully vague, as Marge alludes too. This allows him to be a camelion and become other people, without leaving much in the way of a clue about himself, which would expose him as having adopted a fake persona.

Yes, in a world where Tom Ripley isn't a Damon/Delonesque matinee idol, it doesn't make much sense to "gild the lilly" (or pansy for that matter) as masterfully as Minghella did back in '99. Far more impactful to dwell on the "blank, murky depths" of Tom's other otherness in a black & white reimagining, especially if it's, prima facie, a compelling part of the actor's arsenal. Can't wait to see it. I'm sure it'll be FFFascinating! 😁 #2341

When Some actors speak, they should have their lines given to them by professional writers.

What do you mean here with Andrews interview? Could he not describe his working progress with this role? Why should he speak the lines of a writer here in the interview?

He’s totally articulate explaining a complicated character to an interviewer desperate to bang on about ‘ quarness’ using cliches while he forgot to comb his hair.
