Andrew Neil says he didn't want GB News to be 'outlet for bizarre conspiracy theories'

Former GB News presenter Andrew Neil has claimed he rapidly quit the fledgling broadcaster because he saw it becoming “an outlet for bizarre conspiracy theories” at “the nutty end of politics”.
The veteran journalist, who left GB News within weeks of it going on air in 2021, told the House of Lords on Tuesday that he was surprised the channel “has survived as long” as it has - and said he found it “very hard to see how it can ever be profitable or even break even”.
And the 74-year-old urged regulator Ofcom “to find a backbone - and quick” on the issue of GB News choosing to have sitting Conservative MPs presenting politics programmes, and interviewing members of their own party.

Anti-vaxxers or those who were completely right? Depends which way you look at it. At least those comments show us exactly who he is, and that's certainly a lot less relevant than he appears to believe.

Totally agree, he has no credibility left. Those who declined the experimental medications were vilified by the likes of Andrew Neil and called ‘anti vaxers’. With hindsight those anti-vaxers have been proven right.

The real truth is that GB News is watched mainly by highly sophisticated people wearing Burberry tracksuits and whose living expenses revolve around purchases of Stella Artois (the canned variety) and lottery tickets.

GB News presents issues in alternative way using excellent presenters not found elsewhere, premier of these is Neil Oliver.

It really doesn’t, news should be just that, the news. Not some news followed by what you should think about that news. Not many get that bit right at all.

Frankly he profoundly misjudged the situation. An enterprise like that doesn't emerge out of nowhere, and if he thought it was intended as a legitimate effort to create a mainstream rightward leaning news source he failed entirely to grasp the motivations of the people in charge. I do fully accept his statements as truthful, he did leave quickly, and I don't think he ever intended it to become what it became. I just think he was remarkably naïve, not least given the broader direction of travel within the ecosystem at the time. While the UK is not the US, the market for cranks remains reliable, because those people crave affirmation to an almost compulsive degree, and will absorb a lot of repetitive redundant bloviating programming.
