Andrew Keenan-Bolger swept the Broadway Backwards audience off its feet in a cheerful reinvention of “He Plays the Violin” from 1776. Rather than pining for Thomas Jefferson, Bolger’s love interest was a dreamy violin student with skill to spare, played by Dominic Dorset. Romance bloomed in this joyous number under the watchful eye of the music teacher, played by Bill Nolte.
Broadway Backwards, the annual Broadway extravaganza celebrating the LGBTQ+ community through the great songs of musical theater, returns to Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre on Monday, March 13, 2023. The beloved evening and its star-studded cast will embrace love and self-expression in true Broadway fashion.

Broadway luminaries and cheerful audience members united in full and jubilant force May 23, 2022, lending their light to celebrate LGBTQ+ lives, culture and contributions with the in-person return of Broadway Backwards.
Broadway Backwards creator Robert Bartley wrote and directed this year’s return to the stage alongside associate director Adam Roberts. Bartley and Roberts joined James Kinney and Joshua Buscher-West in choreographing the show. Mary-Mitchell Campbell served as music supervisor; Ted Arthur was music director with Nicholas Connors and Nick Wilders as associate music directors.
The 16th edition of the show, which had not been performed live since 2019 because of the coronavirus pandemic, raised a record-breaking $758,582 to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in New York City.
Jenn Colella returned as host, leading a cast of 86 performers and a 13-piece orchestra that enchanted a standing-room-only audience at Disney’s New Amsterdam Theatre with LGBTQ+ affirming numbers.

Jeff Brancato was production supervisor and Gregory R. Covert was production stage manager. Binder Casting’s Mark Brandon and Chad Eric Murnane served as casting consultants.

What began as a small, grassroots concert performed in the community room at The Center in 2006 has grown into a highly anticipated event presented in one of Broadway’s most beautiful theaters. In its 16 editions, Broadway Backwards has raised $6.3 million for Broadway Cares and The Center.

While I was reading your comment 15 seconds in the video said "I know exactly why you're here. " And I clicked on this video for 3 reasons 1 I play the violin 2 Im in love with theater 3 I saw Homeysexual activity in the thumbnail.

This is hilarious!! Andrew is amazing as always!! My favorite videos consist of Andrew Keenan Bolger singing and twirling across a stage while looking like a buff baby bird. It’s a niche subject but one that this channel provides for us
I attended BB this year. After the number Jenn was talking to Andrew about how he wound up in this number. I heard part of the story because I used that break to run to the loo. He got a last minute call on Friday 5/20 to stand in - and it was like he was rehearsing it for weeks, not three days. Great performance.

Hahaha I am entertained by this performance. It’s charming and really sweet. The casts know how to light up for stage especially violin player and singer. Words are not needed to show their chemistry.

What a fun rendition! “1776” is coming back to Broadway soon with an AMAZING new revival. I got to see it earlier this week at the A.R.T. in Harvard. I recommend everyone checking it out-it’s fantastic!

this is a number from 2022’s Broadway Backwards, a show where miscellaneous broadway actors perform miscellaneous broadway numbers, except the originally hetero dynamics are recast to be queer. the show is an annual fundraiser for the organization Broadway Cares Equity Fights Aids. while queer representation and equity could always be better, yes we’re very lucky to have pushed for such programming in the US and won 💛💛
I really wish we had gotten a digital show like last year, I spamed so many people to watch and donate. Clips just aren't the same

I saw The Lehman Trilogy at the National Theatre in London. I too was blown away by every aspect of it. Three hours never went by so quickly. It was a very weird experience for me, because, unlike most of the white Christian audience, a lot of stage business probably went right over their head. At intermission I explained to my neighbour on my right what the gesture of putting your hand on the door jamb and then putting your hand on your mouth was all about. It’s an automatic response for Orthodox Jews even today. At the second intermission I had to explain why I had so heartily laughed at the scene in the Hebrew school. One of the brothers was acting up and the teacher cuffed him. In those days you could get away with it. I know, it happened to me many times. British theatre goers rarely give a standing ovation. Too reserved? I don’t know. This Canadian was on his feet the minute the stage lights came back up at the end. For a moment I was all alone but then a lot around me slowly followed my lead. Bravo, Brits!
