Andrew Huang - Getting Started With Modular Synths - Episode 1

Музыка

I filmed this back in August 2017 with the intention of starting a new series but have a change of plan regarding the delivery of the content and started with this first episode this will now be a monthly live stream (maybe more than one a month sometimes too, but at least one!) so you can join in the live chats and also watch the video right after the streams here on my channel.
It was a pleasure to chat to Andrew casually and openly about getting into modular synths and specifically eurorack. You can check out his channel right here - / @andrewhuang and his site here - andrewhuang.com
As always fire away with any questions and comments. Cheers! :)

    Great start to this series, I look forward to more perspectives. I really enjoy the aspect of music discussion and getting into the things that make us tick. There are so many things to be gleaned from this sort of angle of just a couple of musicians sitting around talking about music, while exploring how it all fits in with the format. Very informative and enjoyable to watch! Cheers!

    Interesting RE power, most are very safe. It's anything messing around with mains voltage you should be wary of. But I don' think anyone sells anything direct where you have to deal with that. Cheers for the sub I appreciate it. Hopefully the videos will also give some tips for general synthesis too both semi-modular and non modular too.

    The PEG and Maths are also both powerful and dynamic Envelope Generators. It's really interesting how the discussion here was largely about them being LFOs. A testament to how one module its one thing to one person and something else to another.

  • @DivKid

    @DivKid

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yeah definitely. PEG I tend to always use looping, I don't have a Maths but it's nearly always a triggered envelope when I do use it in someone's system.

  • @LukeKillen

    I always thing of the PEG as the robotic cousin of MATHs. Using the ASYNC triggers in conjunction with CVing the divider is great for just getting precise envelope length modulation. Also as you suggest an amazing Dual LFO.

    Maths is loosely based on the Serge DUSG. Tony designed it to go with the Make Noise QMMG (which is out of production). As the QMMG has many CV inputs, Maths was made to feed many CV inputs with just one module. As Make Noise was quite early in the Eurorack game, there wasn't anything like it in this format before. Keep in mind that at the time there weren't many Eurorack manufacturers... hence not many modules, compared to todays choice, available at all. I think to this day Maths is the most sold module.... though Mutable might have surpassed that with Clouds temporarily, but I don't think any single module has been sold more than the Make Noise Maths over all.

  • @DivKid

    @DivKid

    6 жыл бұрын

    Maths deserved it's placed as the on going joke "PM'd for Maths" on the forums and groups and is a great module. It always feels like a little "home" in someone else's system when I go to patch a system I've not used before. You're right about the design coming from the Dual Universal Slope Generator and I know Tony really worked on moving it forward for the format. I didn't know it was pretty much direct for the QMMG though. I haven't made that connection as I'd think a quad gate would want a quad function source.

    Love Andrew's work, I think he is helping his audience to be more open about what music is and what one can do with do with creativity. I enjoyed modular synth compositions before I stumbled on Andrew's channel, but one thing he really did for me was get me to think that maybe, just maybe I might be able to get into this thing practically. Before seeing Andrew it seemed too out of my reach, but having seen him introduce some of the basics and seeing the what he has produced definitely piqued my interest.

    Interesting video lads. FYI a good human drummer can be on the beat for the kick and behind the beat for the snare, hats etc. The major 'selling' point with modular is the tactile nature. Software is superior but nothing beats knob twiddling and software doesn't look as cool. The fact the word money is mentioned so often in this video tells you how costly modular is. Hence the term EuroCrack. So yeah, you won't make anything on a modular system that you cannot already do with SW but you'll 'feel' special making music with a modular system, and that is important in itself.

  • @DivKid

    @DivKid

    6 жыл бұрын

    as a "good human drummer" I'd agree. My day job is teaching drums and has been for a few years in schools, privately and in a college. The magic of course for feel and groove is finding a good bass player who can also do that with his lines or counter your lines. I'm lucky in that I have a bass player to call upon for that. I agree about the tactile nature, analogue or digital doesn't matter to me it's interface and tactility through and through.

  • @DivKid

    @DivKid

    5 жыл бұрын

    I personally wouldn't waste the case space if I could help it and I'd keep them out of the case. HP gets expensive both in physical space and actual module price so I you can keep the Moog units in there own cases. Unless you have a specific idea about one instrument in one case of course. In terms of other things to get it totally depends on what you want to achieve. Morphagene I'd say needs some modulation, Magneto is nice with modulation too.

    Excellent vid as always Ben. PEG was the first module I built and I love it. My system has grown quite a bit since then (18u) and have about half a row left. I keep telling myself when it's full, that's it ;-) . I'm Seriously tempted by a Rampage (Mostly after seeing your vid but also playing with it VCVRack more recently) but Maths is the one that always comes up in these conversations. Can anyone talk me out of the Rampage and into the Maths? Pros and cons to both? Cheers.

  • @DivKid

    @DivKid

    6 жыл бұрын

    They're both very good and it would be hard to be totally definitive about which to choose. The beauty of Maths is the four channels of attenuversion but then Rampage doesn't have those but does have ins and outs that Maths doesn't have. The function generator shapes are also different either been expo, linear or log and variable between on Maths or having log rise and expo fall through linear to expo rise and log fall on the Rampage.
