“It’s hard to recognize what you’re watching, at first,” he said. “He’s developed into a fighter who kills in stages, like the lethal injection. You know, with multiple shots. One goes in and sedates you, the next one shuts down the nervous system, the next one stops your heart. It’s not a firing squad. “That’s what’s unfolding. People go to fights and look for the wrecking ball, but instead you have this totally helpless person. I watch the ref watch the other guy. After the second round the ref never looks at Andre again-he starts watching the other guy closely. He’s getting steadily blasted and he can’t do anything back, and he’s starting to shut down. The ref sees and feels it first. I watch the faces of people around the ring, and there isn’t much cheering or yelling. It’s almost somber, like we’re witnesses to an execution.” Virgil Hunter

Nice vid. Wards slow Starr in the pros I always put down to the way amateur boxing was in his era. It was head gear, 3 of the 5 judges needed to score a punch (point) so that era it was all long outside work. Which makes it more amazing that by the time he found his footing in the pro game he was probably (with Floyd) the #1 throwback old school fighter in the game. A master on the inside. But even more spectacular wa when he told post career how bad his right shoulder was. You watch the froch fight he basically beats him one handed. He could only throw the right hand short. All that said he was a recklessly dirty fighter following punches with his head and punching low in nearly every fight especially his last. And he couldn't sell tickets regardless of his greatness.

I think the Kessler fight is a little overrated. Kessler also had injuries after Calzaghe, and hadn't fought anyone of note until the Ward fight. A gap of almost 2 years. Kessler was only stopped cos of those accidental head butts too. I think a rematch would have been interesting after Kessler's fight with froch where he had a new trainer and clearly showed improvement in his style, was less telegraphed used more lateral movement etc. He also knocked out green cold in 4 rounds where Ward went the distance. Still a good win for Ward but I don't think he faced the best Kessler, but then I'd also say that re Calzaghe too. I still think Ward would beat a better Kessler tho, just sharing my thoughts.

I realize you don't like his style. I can agree with that. But he was the best in the divisions he competed in. He's beaten everyone. That's an indisputable fact. He's not the best boxer in history, I didn't say that. But he has made his career flawless. Why would he fight better if his gamelan always works? What are you talking about? And who's going to tell him how to fight better, unless it's himself. That's why he's a flawless champion. He should be respected for that. And don't tell me he was a dirty boxer. There are thousands of dirty champions in boxing. And there are legends like Bernard Hopkins and Roberto Duran and Evander Holyfield who were hundreds of times dirtier than Ward. Miguel Cotto, Tito Trinidad. I think you have to respect every champion for their contribution to boxing. If you've ever seen a world champion, even in amateur boxing, you should just kneel before him. Because this man has given everything he has to achieve this. And it doesn't matter if it's Mayweather, Pacquiao, Duran, Corrales, Ward or just an amateur world champion. All of them have gone to their peak.

No, it's not. You've completely misunderstood my message. Flawlessness is not about his boxing style. It's about the way he's spent his career and what he's always striving for. And on the subject of styles, I'll tell you something else. Ward is not the dirtiest boxer. The dirtier ones were Hopkins, Oscar Bonavena, Joe Calzaghe. But the dirtiest was Roberto Duran, probably the dirtiest boxer in history, but that doesn't make Roberto bad. It's his style. It's just the way he is. He's unique. Same thing with Andre Ward. Most people don't know shit about boxing. Roger Mayweather was right, rest in peace, Mamba.

@ You're right, most know nothing about boxing. Which one of us fits into that category is up for debate. To begin with, your answer doesn't fit my comment. If you can't respond to a comment properly, how can anyone think that you're capable of analyzing a fighter? You show a lot of his fights in this piece, describing the way he won fights, yet you claim that his boxing style has nothing to do with your assessment. Then you say he's not the dirtiest fighter. I didn't say that he was the dirtiest fighter. In fact, I wasn't offering my own opinion at all. I clearly stated that there are many complaints, never did I say that the complaints included my own opinion. At the end I said, ' if that's true', which means I'm not stating anything emphatically, I left room for the possibility that the complaints are unjustified. After all of that you claim that I misunderstood your message when the opposite is true. Comprehension/interpretation means everything.@@Boxing_Classics

For me to call the video "Shitty Asshole" or "Bad Boxer" and start hitting? No, that's not gonna happen on my channel. If you're here to make fun of me, that's not gonna happen. I do serious content. Andre Ward is a flawless champion in my opinion. If you think otherwise, create a channel and try to make a movie like that. Maybe you'll get something out of it. And then I'll shake your hand. If you watched the video to the end without rewinding, you'd understand why this documentary is called that. Yeah, I'm talking about his style and his victories. But what does style have to do with evaluating his career? You don't get it, do you?

I made a simple statement that did not include my own feelings about Andre Ward. Is that not acceptable? I don't want anything from you, this is the comment section. My comment wasn't mean spirited nor demeaning to Andre or to you. You insulted me saying I don't know shit about boxing. How would you know, I didn't voice an opinion. I made a general statement about what I've heard from others. Did that warrant an insult?

@@MrMarco855 You can hold any opinion you like. I don't mind. But you admitted it yourself, you don't know shit about boxing. Because you made a general statement that you heard other people say. People say a lot of things. Just because a general statement doesn't mean it's true. Most people don't know shit about boxing. Boxing is different. It's technique and agility, speed and brutality, drama and tragedy, comedy and meanness, physics and talent, dirty tricks and cunning. Boxing is everything. Everyone can't be Mayweather or Pacquiao, Ali or Roy Jones, Tyson or Robinson. Each one is an individual, a personality. That's what I'm telling all of you. Every one of these fighters makes a contribution to history. I hope you know what I mean.

Ward retired young to avoid the rising challengers Ward avoided Artur Beterbiev, Adonis Stevenson, OLEKSANDR GVOZDYK, Usyk, etc. Ward is overrated and ran not facing the real toughest fighters.

Didn't fight Bute when he was the highest ranked Super middleweight, fought a boiled down Chad Dawson, avoided the toughest stylistic match up in the super six in Andre Direll, only fighter in the super six to not fight outside of his home country, lost against Kovalev in their first fight. Great fighter, but also very overrated.

He didn't fight Lucian Boute, for the reason that the Romanian was under contract with another promoter. Was Andre avoiding him? Also, as time showed, Boute was just a title holder, a card-carrying champion. Who the hell was Bute beating? Nobody. He's an overrated boxer. Andre Worth is the first boxer to finish Chad Dawson. The Canadian had never lost before. He only had one controversial loss to Pascal on injury. Didn't fight Dirrell for what reason? But let's also be honest, Andre Dirrell, like Lucian Boutet, was an overrated boxer. Who the hell did Dirrell beat? Nobody. Ward lost his first fight to Kovalev, by a slim margin. I agree with that. Sorry, but other things, man, you're wrong.

@@Boxing_Classics Direll beat Froch, if you know you know. Styles make fights. As far as Bute, Bute was recognised as the no. 1 super middleweight at the time and him not being the super six was a mark on the tournament. He boiled Chad down to a catch weight, a weight he hadn't fought at in 8 years. Ward could never punch and yet he stopped Dawson, dropping him numerous times it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the weight cut had a huge impact on Chad. Ward might have beaten him anyway but the nature of the victory was an issue for purists. Ward was a real good fighter but he's not some unbeatable all time great, he's just not.

The fact that Boute did not participate in the tournament has nothing to do with Ward. A lot of fighters didn't fight each other. But that's not their fault. That's the job of the promoters. Well, I'll say it again. Boute is a boxer about nothing. Andre Ward has a completely different concept of boxing. He wouldn't even see him. About Dawson. Did Andre put a gun to his head to make him lower his weight? No. Chad Dawson encroached on his titles. A lot of fighters jump categories to win belts. But it didn't work out here. Ward's win was a class victory. Let me summarize. No one is saying Ward is the all-time great. Is that what we're saying in the video? One thing I was trying to say. Ward's merit is highly undervalued. That's all. Thanks for the discussion.

You probably didn't listen to the end of this story. Andre Ward had some health problems. He couldn't keep fighting, and if he had, he wouldn't have been able to train and fight at 100%. It's cases like this where the careers of many boxers go sturmily downhill. Ward did what he had to do.
