André Gregory in Conversation with John Mulaney

There are three stages of life, reflects the visionary theater director, writer, and actor André Gregory: “Youth, Middle Age, and You’re-looking-great!”. In This Is Not My Memoir, Gregory (now 86 years old) shares memories from the making of his seminal film My Dinner With André and ponders having “reached the age of You’re-looking-great”. Gregory is joined in conversation by stand-up comedian and SNL alum John Mulaney whose alter ego from the hit Broadway show Oh Hello! made a hilarious appearance at Film Independent’s 2019 adapted table read of Gregory’s My Dinner with André.

    "Delicious" indeed, and may I add delightful to have two talents of different generations display humility and generous admiration for each other as human beings and artists. Looking fwd to part two that will include a cardigan and hoodie swap. JK. Thank you, gentlemen!

    @@rozmarks234 It's actually not. Oddly enough, the opposite is true. Unless you know him personally, you don't know why he went to rehab so please don't spread rumors. The excessive blinking is most likely due to anxiety or his contacts are dry. I'm sorry if I'm coming across harshly, I am just fiercely protective of certain things and addicts and John Mulaney are a couple of them. No offense intended.

    Wonderful interview and I have only just watched "My dinner with Andre" . I love listening to people's stories, I was mesmerised how you kept pulling my attention back to you by the things you said, particularly as it pertains to today. I have done self exploration for a while, yet constantly find myself slipping back into comfort and auto pilot! Much to think about, brilliant movie 👏👏👏

    What a wonderful interview. Of course, throw in Vanya on 42nd Street and A Master Builder (and some of Wallace Shawns' plays while we're at it - I'm specifically thinking of The Designated Mourner) and that interview could have been 3 hours long... and riveting!

    Not to get all parasocial about it, but this conversation happened just before John went into rehab, so I wonder if it provided food for thought for him as he went through recovery. Because Andre touches on lots of things about anxiety and love and coping with failure which are insightful, and John does seem to be living more true to himself now.

    this is a beautiful conversation and i do not mean to undermine it by making a joke, but, there is so much more evidence for john mulaney being immortal in this video! ik the jokes a bit played out at this point but i’m starting to genuinely believe he’s a god. from him saying he’s 35 to him saying he’ll talk and get him a few more years! and just the way he talks, he is so in sink with this lovely man in his 80s even though he looks younger than ever here! ik most of these gave there own explanations but all together?? open your eyes people!!!

    My Dinner with Andre was also transformative for me. The lines from the film that has haunted me during this pandemic is this exchange: Andre " And that's to face, the confront the fact that you're completely alone, and to accept that your alone is to accept death." Wally "You mean, somehow when you are alone, you're alone with death. Nothing's obstructing your view of it". Being cut off from our daily superficial distractions has forced us to look at our own mortality, and this I believe has lead to the huge revolt, since we as a species seem to want to be oblivious of our pending fate. What I would not give to talk with Mr. Gregory, I have admired his work and am a huge fan.

    Can someone explain his boring/shark metaphor? I'm a bit confused

  • @hadleelandis553

    @hadleelandis553

    3 жыл бұрын

    Aniloamitit I’m not sure but my take on it was for example if you have a boing task you’re bored of doing but you know something new and different will come of doing the boring task, the only reason the task of boring is because you fear either greatness or “failure” that will come of it so if you just embrace the task the end of the task will not matter as much but what does matter is the fun you had doing the task So the shark is scared of coming to the surface (the surface being the completion of the task) because the snark does not know how the surface will feel I guess is what I’m trying to say I hope this made sense but it probably didn’t tho lol

  • @huwfylt

    I thought he was saying its like, when you're bored you think nothing will come of it, but in reality there's something brewing that you might not be aware of in the moment. So the shark is like the thing that is brewing below the surface.

  • @annahalliday9922

    @annahalliday9922

    Ok I saw it as you sense the shark and rather than confront shark because you are scared of what it might mean and how your life might change you sort of tread water in your normal life not changing anything becoming bored. So like if you are bored of your job and would rather do something new, rather than acknowledging those feelings and bring the shark to the surface you ignore it and stay bored because you are scared of how your life might change. I was a bit confused too and could be wrong, but that’s how I took it?

    The reason for so many "Classic Liberals" moving right lately is in reaction to the fact that so many people who they once revered as extremely creative, intellectually stimulating and morally based are so adamantly suffering from TDS! Those who despise Trump seem to be reacting to him from shallow emotional/ aesthetic reasons. I have admired Gregory and enjoyed Mulaney ever since I first became aware of them (Gregory for fifty years!) but cannot understand their knee-jerk revulsion towards him! Have they objectively looked at his record in office and compared it to the disastrous policies of corrupt Biden; particularly his attempt to oppress free speech?! WHERE ARE THEIR MINDS? WHERE ARE THER HEARTS?
