Anderson Cooper, Gloria Vanderbilt on family, loss and love

CNN Anchor Anderson Cooper and his mother - heiress Gloria Vanderbilt - open up in a new book, “The Rainbow Comes and Goes: A Mother and Son on Life, Love, And Loss.” In a companion HBO documentary, “Nothing Left Unsaid,” the “60 Minutes” correspondent also talks about losing his father and brother. Gloria was born into the multi-billion dollar Vanderbilt family and went on to establish herself as an artist, author and jeans designer. The mother-son duo joins “CBS This Morning” to discuss their book, family history and relationship.

1 FKT it's so hard to understand sometimes how someone in their 90's can be so in the moment, so aware and have all their senses- yet some people, as was the case with my Mom, endured many years of her life with multiple medical issues and then seeing dementia setting in her 80's. And people even younger- in their 60's- going through dementia and other conditions. So many questions we may never understand how people age differently from each other.

Not saying she doesn't look good...but I think all that work on her face,(especially, those cheeks implants or fillers), she can hardly talk. I don't know if she had a stroke and it's trying to be "fixed", but I think she would look better without that stuff...to me, plastic surgery just dates and ages you more. These young girls doing this stuff at such young ages....dear lord...there faces are going to melt off,(unless they perfect face transplants or are able to 3D scan genetic skin/faces and transplant that way?) But agree, money and lifestyle help you to look better. I know I will be alone and ostracized for this comment...no disrespect indended....MOO.

There are even more tragedies that were not widely reported. Look up Anderson's half-brother, Christopher Stokowski, Gloria's son by famed conductor, Leopold Stokowski. He abandoned the family after Gloria's therapist ruined his marriage engagement. The therapist was later convicted of stealing over $1 million from Gloria and cheating on her taxes. She had to sell property to pay the government of back taxes. Chris reconnected with the family after 38 years after watching the HBO that Anderson mentioned in the interview. It's a truly bizarre story. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3944494/CNN-host-Anderson-Cooper-reunites-brother-not-seen-38-years-bizarre-dispute-mother-Gloria-Vandberbilt-s-therapist.html

@Martha McGee you said it nicely. Gloria had a great mindset despite her personal tragedies. She could have given up at any point. Inheriting money is no guarantee of success or mental stability. Gloria had drive and determination. She was creative -- an author, a designer, an artist an entrepreneur. Loved life. An inspirational woman, and mother.

Just ran across "THE RAINBOW COMES..." at a second hand book seller, and grabbed it. The way in which it is written is most engaging: can't put it down!! As I comment, the book is here on a table - close by my elbow. Gee now I think of it, GV's jeans are also near me right now - covering my not so skinny backside!! Fascinating, these two people. And how, resuming dialogue with a parent later on in life (this happened for us when we home cared our mother, moving her in with my sister, when mom was in her early 90's) can heal. And often, somehow... round out a lifetime, as one reaches the 'far turn'. Not without pain, but always the rewards of greater understanding. I have huge respect for 'Coop"..and I see where he gets many of his impressive personal assets (no, I don't mean the family's money!)

bill seemore social status and money only shelter you from some things like monthly expenses. In Gloria's case, I'm sure she would rather have had affection from her parents than all the money in the world. And nothing comes between an individual and the punch in the gut that comes when one's husband dies on the operating table or one's son steps back from your outstretched hands and falls 14 stories to his death while you stand in helpless horror.
