AND SOON THE DARKNESS - Interview With Kim Newman

Фильм және анимация

And Soon the Darkness is a 1970 British thriller film directed by Robert Fuest and starring Pamela Franklin, Michele Dotrice and Sandor Elès. The plot follows two British nurses on a cycling holiday in rural France; during their trip, one of them vanishes, and the other struggles to search for her in a rural community.
AND SOON THE DARKNESS cleverly confounds expectations and extracts the maximum amount of suspense, sustaining jeopardy and a sense of claustrophobia despite the story all taking place in wide open spaces in complete daylight.

This is amazing to see! And Soon The Darkness is a seriously underrated horror/thriller from the 70s.

And soon the darkness is in my view one of the most atmospheric and chilling horror films this country has ever produced.

It is indeed, and together with the later 'Blind Terror' (aka 'See No Evil') set the template for Brian Clemens later suspense anthology for TV - 'THRILLER', as I examine extensively in my book 'A THRILLER in Every Corner'. Lots of memories and commentary when I interviewed the great man about all these productions before he sadly left us.

I've seen this film when it was originally released in the seventies and I 've never forgot about it. It was so good in every aspect that it stayed memorable for me for almost half a century.

I love this film, you know that feeling when we've sunbathed on grass in the park etc and you doze off and wake up with the plane flying over and you feel you've been there too long, this movie has captured that and the feel of the summer and countryside, being young, single and life is an adventure, it takes me right back to those feelings. I feel I'm in France, their clothes and especially the sandals I wore as a teenager, plus the murder captures the utter terror in a realistic way. It does deserve more credit.

I've recommended this film to friends over the years, and all, returned with surprise in their voice..."That was a really good film!" It is possible to get it on DVD. If you watch it once... You'll watch it again. No explicit violence... Most is up to the imagination. The lure is...Well, it's irresistible... It's...YOU! PS. The title music...Excellent!

I discovered this film only recently and love it. I love the seventies period feel of it, also the vast emptiness of rural France which I experienced myself travelling through France. Pamela Franklyn was adorable and Sandor Eles was great. There is a vastness and silence in this film which gives it a chilling effect as well as strange characters. For me, it isn't really a horror film but more a very suspenseful thriller. I hope I can find more films like this which I may have missed. I found another film with Judy Geeson called 'It Happened At Nightmare Inn' (1973). It's about a girl who travels to Italy for a holiday. It's another horror (thriller) with the obvious nostalgic seventies feel to it. Just love these films. By the way, I was also a fan of Studiocanal productions, which I knew from Canal Plus, having lived in France. I have always loved the logo too. I didn't know that there was a StudiocanalUK. Just subscribed.

The teacher in the car is a great character. Almost certainly intended as a (closet or just repressed?) lesbian, very creepy dialogue '... loathsome business...sex...' which keeps you on edge.

"And Soon The Darkness" Bought it on DVD Excellent film. Just watched it... again...yesterday. Like chocolate, one bite and one Ends up eating the factory! Yeah! And Brian wrote "The Carpathian Eagle" (Was one story in the ITV Thriller series... It's on youtube ) Hollywood called their version... "Basic Instinct" with Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone. Most film goers never caught-on to that one.
