I sold Mark the 2003 Gibson Custom Shop '57 Reissue in Brazilian Blue that you had your eye on. He bought this from me in 2005 along with a minty 1965 Gibson Dove that also sold in this auction ...Needless to say he made quite a return on his investment. That'57 Reissue had a Brazilian Board as well. The finish was like liquid... He e mailed me a couple of times after buying it saying that it was one of his favorite LPs. Needless to say he made quite a return on his initial investment. P.S. Rudy Pensa used to call me "The Other Rudy " LOL.... Thanks for posting !

There's an interview of mark floating on youtube where he shows the reporter his hand technique on MFN in slow motion, and it still took me months to get it sounding "close enough". And that's not even including trying to dial in his marshall + half cocked wah guitar tone

Unlikely there was any confusion there. All very clearly described in the sale catalogue.

I realised early on when I saw the advert that the only thing I could afford was the catalogue !

Jim Irsay collapsed in December and had to be hospitalized. His rampant drug and alcohol abuse is apparently the cause. I hope he can get help and clean up.

The button on the Jaguar tremolo is the locking device. If you break a string and lose balance tension, you can flip this and lock the tremolo into t fixed tailpiece FYI

I was surprised that the red Schecter and the Pensa Suhr MK1 didn't go for more. Nothing really got that close to Eric Clapton's blackie or David Gilmour's black one so I'm wondering if some winners were prepared to spend more if they really wanted something. Maybe one or two felt like they got a bargain, haha! If I had a bottomless pit of money, I'd have gone for some of those 50s archtops.

Here in England we were gobsmacked by the prices, no one thought they'd be throwing money like that at the guitars. There were some seriously pissed off people who'd thought they had a chance of something but it was the millionaires club on the telephones, smh.

I was never a Dire Straits fan back in the day. However as I got older as a guitar player I came to love Mark Knopflers guitar work.

Whoever estimated that Les Paul would bring only 10-15,000 pounds is clueless. Like, totally off their rocker. Even if Knopfler merely owned it but didn't play it on a record as iconic as "Brothers in Arms" it would have brought much more than that.

I was amazed the 59 didn’t go for more. Considering price Gilmours black strat sold for and 59 is more rare then a strat. I was after the Steinberger, price it went for was crazy.

A lot of us outside of Great Britain don't know how important Mark is as a guitar player to them. They told him at the highest level even above Hendrix and Clapton and the other.

I can see him above Hendrix for sure, but on par with Eric maybe. But still, they point of the majority of value just being because he owned them. They iconic ones used in iconic songs I get. But even the gift guitars he had with no provenance other than he owned it adding like 20k of value is wild. I was in the same ballpark as Trogly on expected ranges to see. We both were shocked.

@@216trixie Who are you talking about? Are you really that out of touch with the reputation of Mark Knopfler across the globe, not just in Great Britain? You can keep Clapton, I'll take MK anytime. Clapton is a master craftsman on the guitar, whereas Mark is an artist whose expressiveness and story telling on the guitar is far superior.

My friend Mark Pollock (rip) when he used to own Charley’s Guitars and the Dallas guitar show for many years, might have had that guitar for sale in his shop. He definitely had a Gibson CS LP that belonged to Mark K’s brother which had his birthdate for the serial number too. Probably in the early 90’s. Jack Sonni a sideman guitarist for Dire Straits was a guest of the show in 93 I think.

Well Jack Sonni had a Les Paul very similar to Marks second one that had the serial as his birthday, so it’s probably his one. He sold it along with his Steinberger to pay rent. David Knopfler never featured after 1980 in Dire Straits.

I would never have a delusional thought of bidding in that auction. Even with their ignorant and insulting estimates, it was still shocking that so many guitars went for astronomical prices. Yes, the buyers have to be super-rich folks with money to burn and a desire to show off their MK guitar to their buddies. Even with a good chunk going to charities, it's a little nauseating to have this be a playground for the filthy rich. I feel curious to know who were the main buyers, but if I found out the names, I might really hurl. I did find the auction process kind of entertaining: all those people in the crowd raising numbered paddles, the numerous folks on either side chattering into their phones to take direction from their anonymous bosses, the auctioneer teasing them all and having a good time at the lectern, the bids going up by $10 K or more at a pop, etc.

That retainer on the Surf Green Jag is called a "BuzzStop". I have one on my '07 AVRI Jazzmaster, now strung with .009s. The break angle was so slight that it was unplayable even with .010s, but the BuzzStop generates enough downforce on the bridge saddles that the strings won't jump out even under hard picking. I have an AVRI Jaguar (in Shell Pink, no less!) strung with .010s due to the shorter scale. No BuzzStop needed. I'd bet that Mark has .009s on the Surf Green Jag and would have needed the BuzzStop.

I lived less than that away from it, and its where I used to go stare at the brand new 1984 Gibson Designer Series V's and Explorers when I was 13. I'd walk down Kennewick Ave at least once a week to go stare at the guitars. My first guitar from there: a 1984 Gibson Explorer in ebony. Wish I still had it!

@JokersWild70 the MM famous guitars we're NOT from the 80's but late nineties/early 2000's..but nonetheless, they were still the MM! YES, Dave Carpenter turned that small shop into Gibson royalty for approximately a decade. He took me across the street a couple times where he had a vintage amplifier collection that would blow your mind! I'm from Richland, have been purchasing from them since 1978..well, my parents did then for me! I'm now 61 years old. Was sad to see it go...

I cant believe it's been 40 years ago that this 53 year old used to stare at the guitars in there. I loved that white V with the blue splatter on it. That was cool for that period in time. I remember they also got that crazy looking Roland synth guitar in either late '84 or at some point in '85. Definitely got some bizarre sounds out of it

Given he’s a finger picker I’m guessing they would be even rarer than the 59 LP!

I just had a look and literally the only thing that didn't totally obliterate the estimates was a double bass, and even that went for a good 50% over high estimate

I wondered which one you would get! Watched the whole thing.

The 83' was also the guitar used to record Brothers and Arms not just MFN. Featured at Live Aid also. The 1985 'birth date LP' is wired out of phase in middle position I believe.

Baby Driver did a great job holding those guitars.

5:42 I thought Mark had a Steinberger, and there it is. Nearly £70k. Original 80s Steinbergers in good condition are getting rarer now and attracting some hairy prices.

A lot of people don't realize how important Mark knopfler is as a guitar player to Great Britain. The English consider him tops, above pretty much everyone.

For people interested in non-Gibsons there was probably a record price for a Teisco. One of the Spectrum 5s got $47K. That Schecter Tele was probably also a record for a Schecter at $525K

I participated in the auction as well. I bid 35,000 GBP to try and ensure I got the Money For Nothin' LP.........lol nope

I went the day before the auction and got interested on the 51' D 28. Christie's team was super nice to let me some 10-20 minutes on the test room to enjoy the guitar. I had a 20k€ budget as well, that within 10 seconds, crashed my dream of having that non-famous MK guitar, only purchased a couple of years ago and named to have been used on the recording of 1 track.

The 2023 Les Paul standard R9's have already seen a bump in price here in the UK! £5500 up to about just under £10k

I saw these, I can't believe Christies estimated them so low. Were they drunk? Did they let the work experience kid who'd never heard of Mark Knopfler or Dire Straits do it? Seriously WTF was up with the estimates?

For example, the Schecter sunburst he used to play Tunnel of Love in the early 80's was auctioned in the 2000's and the money donated to Clapton's Crossroads Center.

@@Dave062YTThe burst at 550,000 is an investment. The ‘money for nothin’ guitar at 470,000 is not. The same guitar, but without any provenance, can cost 10,000-30,000 depending on condition & originality. When his legion of fans are dead and gone, (not a huge length of time), it wouldn’t fetch much more than regular market price.

Yup, thought I had a chance for a few weeks, until I saw your pre-auction video and a commenter mentioned the auction house “estimates” were massive lowball figures. Reminds me of the old story of Picasso taking all his buds out for a slap up meal, then paying for it all with a signature and a doodle. MK walks into any guitar store, buys one, plays it in public or on a track then sells it for a huge profit !

I have a Jackson King V with dot inlay (factory). This is just odd for a Jackson. It isnt one of the cheapy ones either, they put the fins on pretty much everything so a dot inlay is actually pretty rare for Jackson, lol.

Got the JTM45 auctioned, still a big hole in the bank account but happy with this. Used on ragpickers dream album, one more matinee and quite probably get lucky album. Got some comment from Guy Fletcher too about this purchase, which is a super cool bonus 😎

Gibson is chomping at the bit. Knopfler reissues forthcoming. Surprising that Inverness Green went so high, not nearly as known as "money". Will my Inverness Studio go up in value? haha. Ü ♫

I think there are a bunch of ETFs and financial products designed around holding non-fungible items and collectibles - it basically means a regular collector has no hope since they will endlessly drive the prices up and then use the expansion of such funds to elevate valuations. Eventually they’ll go bankrupt when other funds reach valuation limits and they can’t create cash, but probably not any time soon.

It's great that public interest was served a little out of this billionaire splurge on so called legacy guitars, by charity donations. But I wonder whether any of these instruments will ever see light of day once in these collections. It's entirely at the whim of collectors whether they will. There was a time something as notorious as the Money Les Paul might be displayed in pubic museums for everyones access all the time, but everything is privatized now and the ante is very high.

wow...i watched some of this auction at christies of Marks guitars......i'm still reeling from it......there deffo is too much money around for some to splash out for (admittedly) some great guitars....but hey.....i'll stick to my own "price" league....better safe than sorry....

When David Gilmour did his auction, he had a left handed black strat! Obviously he never played the damn thing. They estimated to bring anywhere between $4800 to $8000. I placed a bid for $10000! It sold for $52000! I mean come on!
