The best 4 years of my life were spent as an undergrad at TMC. The Chorale was my second family, and Dr. Plew's steadfast faith and friendship brought me closer to the Lord. Even now post Graduate School, I'm reminded of God's steadfast and amazing love for us every time I hear this.

I have been listening to Dan Forrest arrangements for about a year now. A truly gifted composer/arranger. This such a wonderful setting in which to meditate on the wonderful words written by Mr. Wesley.

This composition by Dr Dan Forrest has captured the awe in the lyrics in a very sensitive and personal manner. The music and arrangement is achingly beautiful, and causes one to reflect "And can it be, that Thou my God should die for me?" I have been ministered to by many of Dr Forrest's arrangements and music. May God continue to use his music to touch many lives for Him :)

That's great! I was blessed to be at The Master's College and in the music program for the premier of this song. Dr. Forrest came out and accompanied the chorale on the piano for the event honoring Dr. Plew (for whom this arrangement was commissioned). It was an unforgettable experience! That was the same year we sang Dr. Forrest's Requiem For the Living. Also an incredible piece.

Dan Forrest has been commissioned by God Almighty to do what he does and He commissions very few. Listen to the rewards given to those who remain true to their commission. Just my humble opinion.

Janet Smith God Almighty clearly commissioned every single soul when He poured out His spirit on the disciples and asked them to pass it on. The Bible calls it ‘the great commission. He doesn’t commission a few coz every single person has been given that responsibility, but only a few actually obey God and work on their commission.

Binta G. Your reply is appreciated and there is truth to your reply however, imo God also commissions those whom it pleases Him to commission.

Can anyone help this ignorant soul? Realize Charles Wesley wrote the lyrics to this traditional Methodist hymn however as a Presbyterian cannot remember ever being exposed to this hymn ( and I thought I knew them all). Just discovered this treasure and it has hit me right between the eyes!!! Realizing this is a Forrest transcription and the original hymn melody is different from the Forrest arrangement my question is: is “Can it Be “ in the Presbyterian hymnal? My apologies for this lengthy diatribe. Grace allowed me to discover this hymn which has moved me beyond words. And to Dan Forrest his melody brings tears.

If I'm not mistaken, "And Can It Be" appears in the Trinity Hymnal (#455), which has been used by both the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Church in America. Although, having spent a considerable amount of time in both PCA and Baptist churches I can say that it's definitely more used in Baptist worship services.

Shame! Shame! On the Presbyterians! This hymn should have been a staple in their hymnals and should have been used as regularly as all of the other near and dear hymns. Lol lol 😝

I don't know if this hymn is in the Presbyterian hymnal, but I do happen to know that Dr. Forrest is a Presbyterian. So that's something.

This presentation of this great hymn is very "composer-centric" and the meat of the meaning is distracted. The lyrics can barely be understood, almost like they were trying too hard to put on a show. This is the problem with today's church. It's all about "me" instead of being about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

This arrangement was commissioned by the Master's College (now University) Music Department to honor Dr. Paul Plew's years of service to the college by bringing two of his interests together: Charles Wesley's hymns and the music of Dr Forrest. It was literally written for the sake of performance and to be sung by a group of trained singers; not for the context of a worship service. This recording was not performed by a church, but by a student body of vetted vocalists. Having heard this piece performed live over two dozen times during my time at the college, I can indeed confirm that they were putting on a show - and all to bring God glory. I think you've misunderstood the context and purpose of the arrangement. There's nothing about it that dishonors Christ or His church nor the worship of the Trinity.
