Ancient Silver Roman Coins Restoration. Old Coins Cleaning

Ойын-сауық

Restoration and cleaning of silver Roman denarius coins. In this video, I showed how to clean Roman silver coins and 18th and 19th century coins. I found these coins with a metal detector in the forest. I first washed the old coins in water and then used a silver cleaning solution. I liked the result, the old patina remained on the coins. I hope you liked my restoration.

This guy is really good about conservation vs restoration. He is legit. There are many others on YT who claim items are antique, or many hundreds of years old, then they make them shiny like they wouldn’t have been even new. 🙄

Ofc they're not. That old coin under the soil would not even be recognisable. Just take a look at the coins found close to the dead soldier remains of WW1 or WW2. They're looking way worse than this. So I can imagine what a 2000 years old coin would look like.

What should these coins look like? I found hundreds of Roman coins and they all looked good. These are silver coins, silver does not corrode

@@redeyexxx1841 I can't say whether or not the metal detecting part of this video is real as there are so many fakes where the KZreadr just buries the coins ahead of time then "finds" them, however the coins themselves are real. I collect ancient Roman bronze & silver coins along with bronze & silver rings too. The Romans minted coins for 800+ years not counting the eastern empire, and they minted a TON of them. Bronze, silver, and gold can last an extremely long time buried underground. Especially gold and silver. Bronze corrodes but the amount of corrosion depends on the condition of the surrounding dirt where it is buried. It is possible to find bronze coins which are in incredibly good condition with all the fine details still present, and at the same time it's also possible to find them so corroded that they just look like greenish brown disks with little to no detail. It's possible to buy really nice 1700 year old ancient Roman bronze coins for under $25USD.

I guess he is comparing them to the cheap modern coins that are just capped metal, like the early 1900s German coins fall apart very easily . But you're right, silver doesn't corrode, as long as it doesn't melt it stays as a coin forever @@ReXtorer

You said at 3:19 that you "will not need to clean these coins anymore." Yet, you proceeded to go through two more stepped processes to clean them. They look nice after being cleaned, however, you should learn to keep to your word a little better than you had in this video.
