Thanks! Yeah the quotes are fun to read...for me they're the most interesting part of any study. I'd read more of them but then it would take a lot of time and, haha, in the case of the Assyrian kings, would be a lot of boasting with few details about what was actually going on. Although, one of the best Assyrian quotes, really passages, is from Sargon II which is called "Letter to Ashur." It's pretty long, almost poetic (perhaps in Akkadian it is, much is lost in the English translation) but gives amazing detail of Sargon II's campaigns, especially with regard to Urartu. I'll see, maybe I'll do an video focused just on that text, where I read most of it because it's really that good. As always, thanks so much for stopping by, really appreciate it! Part II of this short series hopefully coming out in mid December...and yes, it'll have lots of quotes from primary sources!

I gotta say, as a fan and someone who has a future set on Biblical studies/theology, learning the archeology and history of the Levant and seeing how the basic historical framework lines up in so many places with the oft-contested Old Testament is very fascinating and encouraging. Great video as always, Cy, keep up the great work 👌

Prehistory is such a wide topic... and also not much well covered in videos in my experience, which are either more focused in history proper or are a bit too technical (academic stuff such as technical archaeology). A good channel with a broad prehistory and human evolution stuff is that of Stefan Milo >> kzread.info/dron/Z9jWH_8tJ-Nmaj8dSQdEYA.html I don't always agree with him but I reckon he does put a lot of effort and has been improving his quality.

Hi! Sure, some of the ones I like for prehistory are Stefan Milo and The Histocrat, but I'm sure that there are others out there I haven't seen. For Near East, SAMA History (formerly Study of Antiquity and Middle Ages) has some good lectures by various professors. Other channels that may not be devoted solely to the ancient Near East but have really good content are History Time and Epimetheus. World of Antiquity also covers ancient history as well. about the moabite rebellion - both the king of Moab (Mesha) and the second book of kings present their version of the event an interesting comparison, and the story of the Mesha steele is quite cool video idea on the house

From watching this, which you did a good job, but it seems when it comes down to fighting the Assyrians, the kings and commanders are the first to flee. For example, Irhuleni of Hamath, Ahuni of Bit-Adini and Hazael of Aram-Damascus.

Sorry for the late reply... are the tracks from the video more or less in order: Ancient Discoveries Foreign Signs Devil's Disgrace One with the Tribe Final Discoveries Protector of the Sky Pepper Seeds Jerusalem Story Interstate 895 Some of them are not the full tracks, but sometimes just the percussion or the melody. Hope this helps... good luck!

Have you ever wondered if the enterprising merchants of Ugarit might have invested in a restaurant which catered to Hittites or Assyrians, where they might have gotten home-cooked dishes reminding them of their native lands? I thought the Hittite pub would be called "At the Sign of Teshub" or the Assyrian one might be "Asshur's Best". If the Minoans could have buildings decorated in their style, why not restaurants in Ugarit? ;)

🤣🤣🤣 I wouldn't be surprised. My guess is that there were probably some Hittites already in Ugarit doing that... maybe Assyrian merchants too although I can't recall any tablet or evidence confirming they were there. My guess is that if they could have traveled all the way to central Anatolia several hundred years prior, they could have also had a presence in a cosmopolitan port city like Ugarit. Haha l like the restaurant names though!

Hi, thanks so much for stopping by, really appreciate it! In some instances, yes, in others no. I really depends on people/civilization and the book. A lot of the Assyrian stuff and a good deal of the Persian conforms with it, though often different names are used for the people. In other cases, there's hasn't been a relation discovered. Man, I love this channel. Anyway, Cy has a good command of editing and film composition as can be seen for example at time 0:46 where the pyramids pan one direction, and the people pan another direction, but also the background pans with the pyramids at a slower rate, and the people pan at two speeds. It is these subtle things that really enhance a production without heavily investing in graphics and such. It allows for the production times to be faster, the cost to be lower, and the focus to be on the content. Anyway, if you don't mind me saying that, right after that a gold star object rises up from the bottom and it was a little fast for me and it got me to thinking, one thing that might be cool is if a single object were affected in two ways. for example, if that gold star object not only slid up, but also grew. I think it would be just another good touch if some of the objects had 2 or more effects applied to them at the same time.

Very impressive. You’re always well prepared and well searched for these videos. It’s not a secret to recognize how much work you’ve put into this. I assume you have a sequel? If so, can you include a minute or two on some of these questions: - direct comparison between Israel and Judah? The reason for the naming. - conflicts between the two? - religions of the various groups in these two areas? I think you may one time had mentioned that the majority of the population ad been workshopping various gods. - relations between the two and phonecia, phillistia, and Egypt Can you go over the naming of the small kingdoms. Of why for example it’s called “Aram” Damascus or Moab or “Rabbath” ammon. Lastly, did all these Levantine kingdoms spear aramaeic in the early Iron Age (say around 800 BCE)? Thanks!

I'll do my best to answer as many of them as possible, though some of them are difficult because there is less to answer them with regard to archaeology - for example, conflicts between Israel and Judah and the naming come from the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, not archaeology. There are actually very few sources from Israel and Judah itself outside the Bible; most of what we know comes from others, mostly other groups within Canaan and then Assyrian and Babylonian sources which sometimes confirm and other times contradict what is written there. It's me you guys became Assyrian by the end of 612 BC, then after the different Persian and Greek and Roman empires took over Syria you won’t find a trace the term aramean.

Which state was Irqanata, which was the third largest contributor to the Levant coalition against Assyria, with as much infantry as Israel or Hammath (but less cavalry/chariots)? It's in the list but no explanation given, it does not appear on the maps... I'm puzzled. Is it a polity we better know by another name like maybe Tyre? Qatna (a similar name) does appear in the maps but seems to be under Hammath. In any case, fascinating and very well told as always.

Hi, thanks and glad you liked it! Irqanata is believed to be in what's today northern Lebanon. It's sad that we don't have the name of the king who sent such a large force. I forget if it was not mentioned or that part of the Kurkh stele damaged, but the name currently eludes us. Yeah Qatna is was a separate, although come to thing about it, the name does seem to resemble Irqanata to some extent. Anyway, thanks again, really appreciate you stopping by. Stay safe my friend!

So maybe Irqanata is Qatna as semi-autonomous vassal of Hammath? From the etymology section of the same article: "in Alalakh, the name "Qa-ta-na" was used,[9][10] an Amorite format that was shortened into Qatna during the Late Bronze Age". So, I'm strongly leaning to Irqatana being Qatna, where "ir-" should be "iri" = city (a wanderwort of West Asia origins we find all the way to West Europe in various forms such as "ili", "eli", "uri" and "iri" itself, and, in its Sumerian variant "uru", all the way to India). It means that, even if it was Hammath's vassal, the city had regained much of its Bronze Age splendor and was able to muster an army almost as strong as its neighbors.

Hmm, really interesting. I haven't read that wikipedia article so I'll take a closer look at it, but your hypothesis makes sense. Perhaps the king of Irqanata wasn't mentioned for that very reason... there was no king and it was a vassal state. However, I find it strange that a vassal state could contribute so many men. For example, if Irqanata is a vassal of Hamath, then according to Shalmaneser III, they're providing just as many infantry (although Hamath does seem to have been extremely powerful before SIII ransacked many of it's cities prior to Qarqar). I also doubt that at that time it would have been affiliated with Patin simply because Patin isn't mentioned in the Kurkh stele, but it is mentioned in a prior inscription from 858/859, SIII's first year. I did find in one of my books that Irqanata is also written Irqata (Irqanata was probably the Assyrian version of the name in the text and was thus transliterated as such); it's identified as the site of Tell Arqa in northern Lebanon, from Google maps looks like about 10 km from the Syrian border. @@HistorywithCy Either a vassal or a republic (or both) but in any case it seems lacking a king, and apparently also any sizable nobility as 10 chariots (and no horsemen) is all they brought to battle, but in infantry they match the others big contributors, except Damascus, which is double size. I didn't mean that Qatna was under Pattin at that time, just mentioned that as part of their Iron Age history of being dominated by others (first Pattin, then Hammath) after having been the center of a regional power in the Bronze Age (prior to destruction by the Hittites). At the time of this war it must have been Hammath their overlord of course. The interesting part was that, in spite of that vassalage status, it had recovered into a major city on its own right. "Irqata" is an Egyptian or rather Phoenician Bronze Age name of a city: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arqa#1350_BC_Amarna_letters_Irqata -- The letter mentions a city of unclear location that was attacked by the pesky Habiru and has been tentatively associated to Arqa. It should not be Qatna in this case because Qatna is north of Qadesh and hence in the Hittite domain in that period but to me it is unclear that they are the same cities. The article does not mention anything pertaining to the Iron Age period about this city (jumps directly to the classical and medieval periods). With due caution, the feeling I get is that it was rather a small Phoenician city and that, if it was able to muster such a large army, then the use of the term should refer not to the city as such but rather be generic for the Phoenician league (which are not mentioned otherwise on the list and are known to be in good relations with Ahab of Israel, and probably also the other inland states that took part in the coalition). In any case it seems we have narrowed the candidates to two: either Qatna as semi-autonomous vassal or the Phoenician alliance.

I am so tired of "world history" and other labels where usually the history is very much neglected... but this channel is entitled to use this label in capitals! Well done... Easy to listen to and not as obsessive about reinventing the history of the universe acoording to and all around the hebrew bible as others. Carefull about the coastal rivers though... The Orontis flows east then northward into Cilicya in modern day Turkey, not west then southward like the Jordan and most other rivers in the area (hence its Aramaic / Arabic name, 'Assi, meaning defiant).
