Ancient Dungeon: One of VR Greatest Passion Projects

Ойындар

Ancient Dungeon is a one of the best and most polished VR experiences you can buy and despite that, I still think it gets overlooked. And that's the reason I wanted to make this video, to give it some more of the love and attention that it deserves.

    ****** SPOILER WARNING****** I spoil the final boss pretty early in this video! It’s at around 50 seconds and it’s on screen for just a little bit. If you want to skip past that, use the knife time stamp. I spoil it again during the synergy example from 5:17 ( DON’t click on that!) to around 5:25. And it’s only on screen for a few seconds

    @bmackVR Actually, no, not at all. Though, I borrowed their headset multiple times for 1-3 weeks at a time over the past couple of years. Only time I ever felt a little twinge of nausea was playing Red Matter 1. It had weird jetpack locomotion where it accelerates when you hold forward.

    I think it's important to point out that the art style of Ancient Dungeon and Compound is not accurately represented in flat screen. You can't watch a video and understand, it needs to be seen at the proper scale and in 3D to get it. It does not look nearly as bad in VR as flatscreen makes it look.

  • @bmackVR

    @bmackVR

    I agree completely. I am sure if I got that point effectively across in this video. I view the art style of both games as one of their strengths.

    Yo WTF? No spoiler warning for the final boss? (well, to be fair I haven't made it to the bottom so maybe it wasn't lol) that said, good overview of the game. Ancient Dungeon is a lot of fun, and a great foundation for what could be a must-play VR experience with a bit more substance. I think my biggest issue is the same for most roguelike games in that the story implementation and character development feels hollow. I can tolerate a lot of shortcomings if the story progression is good, but after about 4 hours in, it doesn't look like the characters in the hub have any relevance to your actions in the dungeon. Besides the merchant, I haven't found any NPC interaction within dungeons yet. If these are in the game then I think it is gated off a little too tightly. As a narrative designer, I would implement some features, items, and general progression by finding linked characters in the dungeon to go back into the hub world, depending on the stuff you find could unlock new dialogue trees that could change how your next run could go. right now there are modifiers that basically do this, but linking classes, relic types, weapons, etc to characters or factions could greatly benefit the connection the player feels to the world. making the hub change between dungeon runs via environmental or character-based storytelling would exponentially contribute to the feeling of agency I have and make me care about what I do within the game... rather than just going through just to go through. Like I said, the game is fun, and the mechanics are probably enough of an incentive just to get to the end. But for me, a better reason to want to see it through to the end would be offering instances of people to care about, side-stories to unfold, and a justification for WHY I want to get to the end. I dunno why I typed all that, still haven't finished it so maybe this is all in there and I'm just dumb, but if the devs are still working on it then I'm sure some more forms of narrative agency are coming eventually. Good stuff!

  • @bmackVR

    @bmackVR

    My bad!!! Haha and I think I pretty much agree with the issues you have the game. If you were saving and rescuing people trapped down in the dungeon that could be a nice twist. And it would be really rewarding to see that saved person end up in the base camp. Have you played The Light Brigade? It has a little bit of that incorporated into the game but not much.

    @@Dylawr3nc3 it doesn’t have a lot. You can do some light reading. But you do save soldiers and a few of them turn into something. I don’t want to oversell the narrative part for you.
