I so agree with you about working in silence! I think some folks are afraid to be alone with their thoughts. There are times when I enjoy music or a book or podcast, but other time when the quiet is the best place for creating. Those who always have to have something on in the background should give it a try some time. Who knows, it might bring unexpected peace and tranquility.

Well it is scary to face yourself, your fears and doubts. I also think our society isn't quite into quiet time. Everything has to be buzzing and we're crushed with images and sounds all the time, so most of us have lost the ability of just being. But yes, I agree, anyone should give it a go for at least a day, just to try!

Dear Stephanie, such a treat to hear your thoughts and see your work, and your beautiful books. And yes, it's utterly appropriate to make these jewel-like books into sculpture. I guess consuming books changes us, adds to our knowledge, re-calibrates us emotionally; and art can do exactly the same. And you are so very right about working in silence. You have really given me pause for thought, I ALWAYS work with an audiobook or the radio on. If I work in silence the thoughts and stories in my head become deafening, and actively distracting. Perhaps it would be beneficial to allow myself to be distracted by them instead of pushing them away as I draw to another deadline. It's certainly an interesting new thought, and I thank you for that. And what a treat to see you at work; the format of working and musing is extremely satisfying. Thankyou. Love the fact that you have your mushroom ref out to one side of the books. Where oh where would we be wiithout our reference materials? You do know that the town I live in, Hay-on-Wye, is the second hand book capital of the world, right? Anytime you fancy a visit you'd be more than welcome to come and stay. And spend a fortune on books. I wonder, will the sculptures in the books change the way they smell? I do love the smells of old old books. Thanks again, really enjoyed the film. xLizzie

Lizzie, thank you! sorry for the late reply, I did ignore my channel for a month to focus on other things (also just on myself XD) Working in silence can get very distracting indeed, but it's also just a getting used to :) Your town of yours sounds like heaven! Maybe one day :) No the sculptures don't change the smell. My materials are odorless once the sculpture is done.

This is so beautiful, so relaxing, and absolutely fascinating! I LOVE history and old things…. How AWESOME that you got your hands on beautiful old books!! I, personally, would LOVE a video on the books themselves as well…… History is such a fascinating place, and you’re worlds are colliding when you’re holding those books that people held in the 17-1800’s…. So cool, and such an awesome concept with your art as well!!!!! LOVE THIS!

Wow , I felt the exact same as your friend, I lost my dad first to cancer , he was only 69 , then 3 years later my mum passed with cancer too 😢 I felt so lost , I had 5 daughters and husband and home , yet all the while when my parents were with me I still felt like a youngun myself, but as soon as they left me , it was the first time in my life I felt like a grown up and my decision making took me longer because I was the grown up now , I suffered a very bad nervous breakdown a year after my mums passing , and I am still recovering 3 years later, when I was previously such a strong person ,thank you for sharing this with us , I don’t feel so alone now ❤️❤️❤️

Excellent video and commentary. I would definitely be interested in another video of you just going through the old books that were given to you. My sister, and myself more recently, has been collecting old books as a hobby. So much information from another period of history that you really don't come across these days. I find old books so fascinating! I recently acquired a book from the late 19th century on the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876. I bought it to originally use for making some paper props, but I haven't touched it yet as I'm not sure if I want to really destroy it for my own project. If I get a few more books, maybe I will, but I'd recommend hanging onto those really old books from the 18th century. As you said, they have so much character and history. And of course, your sculpture is just stunning. Appreciated your thoughts as an artist and the importance of giving our work, or other's work, our full attention. Thanks for sharing! :)
