My mother in law is Chinese and she’s constantly gifting me traditional makeup. I use it almost every day and it makes her so happy when I tell her I’ve finished a product because then she goes and buys me more. The packaging is so cute, and the powder is still better than the commercial brands.

That green-ish highlight comes frm the safflower pigment. It shows up only if the lipcolor is done in little-enough amount of water. Coz the lip pigment is very expensive, it is said that the red color with this highlight is only for wealthy ppl. And it used to be considered a very high-fashioned trend back then in the mid to late Edo era in Japan.

My mom was born in ‘62. She’ll sometimes recall seeing her older aunts and cousins using these unique makeup sets from like the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. She says she remembers seeing them apply eyeliner with thin long brushes. She says she remembers another aunt taking out a compacted pink disk she would place over boiling water, the steam would loosen the makeup. Then they’d apply it on her cheeks. It was blush! Says she remembers my grandma mixing a lipstick paste with a few drop of hot water. Then applying it with a brush!! After they’d finish their product after all those decades they’d complain that makeup wasn’t what it used to be!

As a Japanese,I really appreciate that you introduced my country’s culture to the world. Usually Edo people used to Beni on their lips thinly so it looked various shades of red(depending on their original lip color). The golden green color(Tamamushi-iro玉虫色)which we can see in this video was the proof of wealth for Kabuki actors or courtesans in Edo period. It means they can use plenty of Beni. Some ladies used Sumi(solid black ink for example 松煙墨,油煙墨 etc.)to deepen the color instead of thick layered Beni. I really like all of your videos! I aslo acquired an interest in ancient Chinese cosmetics, thanks to you!

I lived in Misawa, Aomori prefecture when I was 9-11 and us Air Force brats had to take mandatory classes to learn about Japanese culture so that we wouldn't offend anybody whenever we were off-base. We also learned origami and Japanese art techniques. I loved that class!! Sadly some techniques, secrets, etc are being lost because of there not being any apprentices that want to learn and perfect the techniques of whatever art forms. Generations of knowledge lost... it's heartbreaking.

So beautiful. I love that You showcase not only eurocentric beauty standards that are so prevalent but also take time to research and show Your audience something we otherwise wouldn't be able to easily access and read about (language barrier and the likes). ❤️ I was always mesmerised by Japanese and Chinese craftsmanship and unique takes on beauty.

Fun fact there are still stores in Japan that sells traditional beni rouge inside a seashell. You have to use your finger and wet it water and dip it into the rouge. I've seen one when I visited Kyoto in one of the shops near Kiyomizu temple. I brought one myself because it reminded me of InuYasha. Yes that episode where he gave his Mom's rouge to Kikyo.
