I am learning brasilian portuguese. I have been off and on for years. I'm 65 , and i speak slowly. but I LOVE PORTUGUESE. I keep saying I should have been born in ANYWHERE where it is spoken. I like what you're doing because I can actually hear the pronounciation and how the language sounds and flows. Keep it up!!

I'm from the northeast. People from here are in Brazil way longer so we don't really now for sure our ancestry. But my grandpa told me that his grandpa and grandma came from portugal and they were Sephardi Jews converted to catholicism.

I'm Brazilian and I have Polish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish ancestry.That's a lot, ikr... Lol

The african influence in Brazil is from Western Africa, like Nigeria and Angola, but most of these brazilians dont know about it, since africans were enslaved, not immigrants like arabs, asians and europeans, then they dont know where their specific ancestry is from, but many blacks still hold african culture, like in Bahia (Northeastern Brazil). I'm brazilian as well, my ancestry is italian, polish, portuguese and amerindian.

everyone white person in brazil says they are italian. Same thing as the US, no one wants to really be "english" and in brazil being "italian" gets way cooler reception than saying Portuguese.

@@johng5261 in our case it is true. Brazilians of Portuguese colonial heritage are almost exclusively mixed race. The few whites in Brazil are concentrated in the South and SP, they have foreigner (non-portuguese) surnames and known immigrants great grandparents as myself. That video was recorded in SP, I can perceive that from their accent.

Some people are irritated, because the Brazilian claim their Italian side. The vast majority of Brazilians have ancestry since the colonial era. It ended up becoming the typical Brazilian thing. The descendants of recent immigrants have more connection with their ancestors. For example, I have the classic brazilian mix "Portuguese, African, Native and Italian". I have no connection with my ancestors, more recent ancestors that i have is from italian side, they were my great-great-grandparents. My connection is just by Italian and Portuguese surnames.

As Italian I'm really really surprised that almost all of them have Italian origins. Man world is not that big!

Coguh : I would say there are barely any Italians in Brazil because as in 2017 they (those you are probably refering to as "Italians") were almost all born in Brazil and speak Portuguese as their mother tongue. If by Italians you mean people of Italian descent, do you count people who are of 25% Italian descent? 12.5%? 6.7%? Maybe you can count them, but that's meaningless. Finally, even considering all that your number is bogus. There are not 60 million people of Italian descent in Brazil. Doesn't add up.

Gustavo C Lan I said that just to express that Brazil has a lo of italians. But for sure is the place with the largest number of italians out of Italia. Also the most african country outside Africa, the most Japanese country outsise Japan. etc... I would say that if a people have at least 1/4 they could be called italian or whatever the country and at least the third generation.

I live in Hungary. I follow Hungarian traditions. I have Sefardic Jew, Hungarian, Polish and German ancestors.

I really enjoyed this episode, thank you! I've been kinda learning Portuguese off and on for a bit now and this was the first time I didn't look at subtitles and I could understand quite a lot (hablo español así que ya sé mucho del vocabulario portugués pero normalmente no reconozco la prounciación portugués). Never practiced writing though so hopefully I'll start that soon :)

For me it's the opposite. I can speak at least a little of spanish on a regular basis but when it comes to writting i'm really bad at it. If you ever want to practice with somebody from Rio the pleasure will be mine in that exchange of culture! Have a good one :)

They had a daughter that married with a guy that had portuguese and indigenous blood and then they had my father. Now on the other part of the family, my great grandma was born in Italia and raised here, she married with a guy that had indigenous and portuguese blood and they had a daughter that is my grandma. My grandma married with a guy with indigenous blood and then they had my mother.

Most of our traditions have been passed down to Brasil and are now also considered "Brasilian Traditions" but that doesn't negate the fact that it was our first (Such as Carnaval, I'll admit they made it better though). Edit: "My family doesn't have any African Traditions" bruhh.... Brazil is Portuguese and African culture mixed together lol so yea you do have African Traditions.

i believe this "mixture" of cultures made yet another unique culture: the Brazilian one. That's why sometimes people say they don't keep any foreign traditions - after about 500 or 400 years, the origin of this or that habits got lost and people don't really know where it came from. Italian, Japanese, German and others came around in the 20th century, so it's easier to keep track of those (for now...).

Its phonology is more related to French than Spanish indeed, so you're kinda right on that statement! :} But it also reminds me of Russian when they say words with a *r* in the middle of them.

This video was probably recorded in Sao Paulo, city/state which has its accent used by the media and news broadcast so everyone in the country can understand it. As a Brazilian myself I struggle to understand some people from the northern and northeastern regions. I am from southern Brazil and the way they speak sometimes sound pretty foreign to my ear.

A parte que mais tem decentes de italianos no Brasil, é o Sul. Eu sou do Rio Grande do Sul, sou decente de italianos, meus sobrenomes são Cappellari e Bianchet.

@@johng5261 for some reason the fact that brazil has lots of italian descendents got you somewhat annoyed hehehehe. in southern brazil, it is indeed a very common occurence! you didn't ask for it, but i think it might enrich further discussions: southern/south brazil has a stronger immigrant presence if compared to its northern region. that is because during the colonial era sugar was mainly cultivated in bahia, maranhão etc - while southern brazil consisted mostly of 'adventurers' trying their luck in new lands(which, of course, didn't require the workforce of maintaining a sugar plantation.) rio grande do sul, which is the state that i come from, didn't even exist back then. so most of our population consists of descendents of portuguese, italian, german and obviously amerindian people.

@@henriquec8848 i lived in brazil for about 3 months in 2004-2005. To sum up the experience, learned some portuguese, no cell phones, travel was by mouth. Had a brazilian gf from Rocinha, she was tan dyed her hair blonde and thought she was special. Good time, a bit scary cause of all the time spent in the favelas, but an experience worth remembering.

Estou aprendendo também. When the word begins with an R, pronounce it like an english "H". We say relax, they say "relaxa", pronounced "Hay-lawsh-a". When the R is in the middle of the word, sound it out like we do in english. Suprise in english = "Sorpresa" in Brazilian portuguese, pronounced "sor-pressa".

@@emiliocarver2061That type of 'r' is from the interior of são paulo state. It come from the influence of the native brazilians. Older families in São Paulo City have another type of 'r' that came from italian influence.

The first dude speaks like he is really half Italian, I swear Brazilian Portuguese is the closest thing to Italian in terms of accent, while Spanish is more similar to Italian in pronunciation, except few sounds is the same.

That’s actually the iconic paulista(paulistano ) accent not sure which is which. São Paulo is the most Italian city outside of Italy, and the way they speak is the reflection of the Italian influence in the state /City. To me he just sounds Brazilian, not Italian.

Eles não entrevistaram todo o Brasil. Algumas pessoas só. E foi em São Paulo, se tivesse sido em Salvador teria mais pessoas de ascendência Africana.

Somente no sul do Brasil vejo pessoas falando sobre seus ancestrais no lado leste do mundo, aqui no norte do Brasil temos a cultura brasileira. Descida da revolução de Cabanos, se você é brasileiro e não sabe, é uma pena. Vamos ser mais auténticos e humildes.

@@jcr3208 Penso que na conversação informal, não haveria problema. Apenas é preciso ter cuidado porque para se referir a uma ação que não ocorreu (mas era necessário que ocorresse) o futuro do pretérito é mais indicado. Uma explicação que eu achei na internet: "Quanto à utilização do pretérito imperfeito do indicativo (devia) ou do futuro do pretérito (deveria), depende do que se pretende dizer. Devia usa-se quando não se tem certeza: 'Você devia estar doente'. Deveria usa-se quando é uma sugestão que seria interessante: 'Você deveria ter ido ao médico'."

Fiquei a saber que na casa dela não tem pratos portugueses , Pizza e spaghetti ( italianos) e húmus...( libanês) ....tenho pena que não saiba apreciar a boa cozinha ...Esta reportagem faz-me rir , qualquer Português como eu vai ter a mesma reação , pois a maioria dos Brasileiros tem ascendência Portuguesa , mas por incrível que pareça ninguém salientou a sua ascendência Portuguesa , e depois são os Portugueses que são preconceituosos, sinceramente fez-me rir esta reportagem , salienta-se a Italiana e quando toca a Portuguesa ,aí dizem ja ser uma mistura kkkkkkkkkkkkk, como se Portugal tivesse algo de inferior à História de Itália , enfim........Já para não falar do erro de Português , quando um canal tem a veleidade de defender a língua Portuguesa , pôs toda a gente a “ parir” pois pergunta pela descendência ao invés de ASCENDÊNCIA...mas enfim o que esperar “ desta gente “ ....

Eu não acho que os entrevistados deixaram de mencionar costumes portugueses por eles terem preconceito ou desprezo por Portugal, e sim pelo fato da ascendência portuguesa no Brasil ser tão comum, que as pessoas aqui não enxergam isso como algo distintivo. É como aquele rapaz negro que disse não carregar nenhuma tradição africana, como se a própria cultura brasileira não tivesse uma influência africana muito óbvia. O mesmo ocorre com a cultura Portuguesa, cuja influência aqui é tão disseminada que ela passa a ser visto como siplesmente "brasileira". Outra coisa é que por as imigrações italianas e árabes serem mais recentes, é natural que as pessoas tenham uma conexão mais direta com esses anscestrais que eles provavelmente chegaram a conhecer, do que com os seus anscestrais portugueses que chegaram aqui a séculos atrás.

O correto é, "ascendência".

Sou do sul e tenho descendência portuguesa, francesa e polonesa.

Em recente pesquisa genetica no semiárido brasileiros por universidades americanas e brasileira mostrou que 56% dna de das pessoas pesquisada na região era de assistência europeia holandês e português e a outra porsentagem era de ameríndios e africanos.

Eu sou do norte também, do Pará. Meus pais vieram do nordeste (Piauí e Maranhão). Tenho ascendência portuguesa, índigena, muito provável africana, além de provavelmente ser descendente de judeus sefarditas, ciganos, e talvez holandesa (há uma certa descendência no nordeste). Ah, ainda tem os mouros que habitaram Portugal por muito tempo, então... E minha cor de pele é branca, como a de um Português, não chega a ser morena como a do CR7, tá mais pra meio amarelada.

I'm from Rio de Janeiro and I have portuguese and italian ancestry, but I probably also have spanish, french and african OR indigenous ancestry. It would be really interesting if I did an DNA test.

Nunca consegui perceber a dificuldade dos brasileiros entenderem o que é "descendência" e "ascendência". Usam os termos exactamente ao contrário do que deveriam!

@@antonioneto1564 Mas não precisa ter sobrenome pra ter ascendência. Meu sobrenome é Careçato (que vem de Carezzato, sobrenome italiano), mas eu tenho 1/4 de ascendência portuguesa, e nenhum sobrenome Portugues.

Tradição africana... claro ne o povo nem sabe bem de onde veio ;(

O que você faz pra saber se um brasileiro tem ascendência europeia? Nem precisa perguntar, ele VAI te contar.

Actually, there is barely any tradition left. Italian descendants usually will say that they speak loud or eat pasta. But those things are part of the Brazilian culture as well. The funny thing happens in the south, where you will see a lot of proud German and Italian descendants, telling you how they are different from other Brazilians in culture, when they actually are full Brazilians: eating churrasco, playing soccer, watching soap operas and listening to sertanejo. Once in a while they dress weird to celebrate their heritage in a festival no modern German or Italian would recognize... The racism and the higher social status of European named Brazilians are way more interesting to investigate than the nonexistent heritage. Or at least, nonexistent in the family level, since Brazil assimilated all cultures at the same time as changing our own with their influence. The black who lives in São Paulo is culturally as Italian as the Italian descendant.
