ANCC vs AANP! WHICH IS BETTER? HOW TO CHOOSE | Fromcnatonp

Nurse Practitioners have to decide between two board certification after completing the NP program. The ANCC or AANP.
In todays video I am sharing my thoughts about both the ANCC and AANP and which one I choose to take and why. Ultimately the decision is personal for everyone which certification body to take, but what if any are the differences or similarities of these boards, and is one better than the other. I will be discussing it all in this video.

There is misconception of board certification with the BC (ANCC) vs C (AANP) credentials. Both are board certifications. I am board certified through AANP as well, and so I use C to identify my board certification. I too have heard of some taking both exams and as far as I know, there are no added benefits to holding certifications from both. There is, however, a benefit to having 2 options for board certification: AANP allows for 2 attempts in a 12 month period and ANCC 3. So you actually have 5 chances to obtain board certification, and can choose to test with the 2nd certifying body if you've met the limit for the other. Hope this helps all the new and future NP graduates! And please keep coming with the informative vids! I enjoy them!

Thanks for watching! having both certification is not necessary, but I do know some who take both exams, yes the misconception is definitely that AANP is not broad certified because we only use C, Thanks for your input.

Love your vids! I have been subscribed for awhile. I took the AANP only because I hate Select All That Apply and ANCC has tons of those types of questions as well as you have to click with the mouse "hotspots" that you are asked to identify like back in RN school. Also, ANCC is more research-focused and AANP is more clinical focused as you mentioned and since I practice in Family Primary Care, AANP is more relevant to my job. On the other hand, ANCC has a huge benefit regarding renewal time. You are not required to have documented hours worked to prove that you have been practicing (there is a certain number of hours you MUST work as an NP to quality to renew your FNP-C certificate. ANCC requires a research project for renewal. Why is this cool? This is awesome because you can't keep your FNP Cert after you retire but just submitting research and not having to work hours as an NP. I hope this makes sense.

Thanks for that, I had no idea about all that with the ANCC. I literally was like no way am I gonna study anything about research I hated nursing research when I did my BSN. The fact that you can only do a research project for recertification is definitely a benefit for recertification. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing I appreciate that.

Current NP student. I have come across a handful of hospital job postings for NP positions that will state “ANCC credential preferred.” Again, only a handful though. I’ve read something about ANCC can look better for hospitals during recertification for Magnet status. But by far, most job postings don’t show any preference between the two credentials.

I preferred to take AANP but most employers in my city specifically ask for ANCC over AANP. So I will take my chances with the ANCC first; if that doesn't work out I will do AANP immediately afterwards. I have also been told that no one really cares which one you have but I didn't want to blackball myself with AANP when most employment ads specifically ask for ANCC. It's truly confusing.

I also took the AANP for the same reason. Didn’t feel like having to read about research but love the clinical component and since it was already mainly what we focused on in school anyways. No job also has ever asked if I’m BC or C. Don’t think it matters. I think is whichever you prefer. I also see people taking both exams too but that’s them. Why pay to stress my brain twice for the same outcome 🤷🏽‍♀️
