Corrections For M64Plus FZ, in the settings sidebar after you've created your controller mapping, go to Profiles > Select Profiles > Controller 1 Profile and choose the mapping you created. For Dolphin MMJR, to change the Emulated Cpu Clock Speed to work, you have to click the checkmark above for "Override Emulated CPU Clock Speed" To get Daijisho to respect your save states for standalone Duckstation, and load automatically into your save state from it, you need version Duckstation0-1-4582. Newest one broke that functionality. For PS2, you might want to try leaving EE Cycle Rate & Skip at 0 first then adjusting like my video afterwards for games that don't work. For ReDream, you might have an issue where it says not compatible for this device in the Play Store, feel free to grab the APK directly from here: apkpure.com/redream/io.recompiled.redream

Question: i followed your guide and stuff is working fine. Thanks for that. But now everytime i turn it on, there is an update available for the system. Can i update safely or should i not? I dont want to lose all the settings as they took a long time to inplement.

I have not, as I've applied the 60hz and oversharpening fix, and that update breaks it. But from what I understand, the update doesn't reset anything and should be safe to install.

If you got the RG405M recently and you're wondering why you can't drag to remove the home apps like he does around the 3:10 mark, it's because you have to tap and hold the home screen, go to home settings, home screen, and select "with app drawer".

I am going to add in some possible hot key alternatives. The one thing I loved about the linux builds with anbernic devices was the function hotkey enabler capabilities. Android won't let me remap the back button, but then I really thought, why do I need a hotkey enabler. So, now my hotkeys are just loating out there. Menu = L3+R3 Quit= Start+Select Save=R2 Load=L2 FF=right analog right Rewind= right analog left pause= R3 Mute=L3 I have found this so unobtrusive and functional, I'm loving it. It didn't work when I used retroarch for PS1, but now I am moving to duckstation and this works perfect for all 8+16 bit games

A couple of points to note. Yaba Sanshiro 2 only lets you change your directory in the pro version, not the free version. Also you can avoid ads in Aethersx2 by playing offline; this only depends on whether you want to disconnect from wifi when playing PS2 or not. But great video regardless, feels good to finally have more stable PS2 framerates.

Just got mine. And a lot of titles are almost unplayable unfortunately. NBA street 2 & 3. Metal Gear Solid 2. Kinda bummed but I've got so much other stuff on it that works.

Excellent video. I'm a complete newcomer to retro handhelds and the 405m was where I jumped in. Following this video, I managed to get it all set up and working. Thanks a bunch. Subbed.

I had a few issues with mine, I powered down and when I turned it back on again, my SD card needed reformatting and everything crashed every five seconds. So I reset it and since removing the questionable apps (apptoide, APKPure) and inbuilt emulators, I've had no such issue. Now I can install Minecraft and others on Google Play no problem and haven't lost the games I spent hours ripping from my Dreamcast collection again. Though I still love this handheld now it works, glad it was my first foray into retro devices.

For whatever reason I just cannot get Gamma OS to install via my laptop (and I bought the 405M for that) but this video has got me close enough that this is now by far my favourite handheld (I've had the 353M, Miyoo Mini Plus and Retroid Pocket 3+). The build quality is unreal, the D Pad is perfect and if you're happy with the 4:3 era this is getting close to perfection. I'd still stack the shoulder buttons for the few games that need them (although I've just been customising the controls to move accelerate/brake to the buttons on Dreamcast racing games) and as 4:3 device I would have loved for the stick and pad to be swapped around, but it's a wonderful thing overall.

Hey thanks for making this video. I got mine last night, and followed your guide. Managed to get myself set up by the end of the night. You saved me a lot of time and research! I'm even using my 2nd RG351V SD card (running AmberELEC) to play games. I just made new folders for ps2 gamecube wii and 3ds and no problems! I can even swap it back to the 351V and it still works.

I would like to add a quick note for those searching for the answer to this issue. The rg405m's gamma os file explorer will show the dolphin apk linked as a bin file, and to fix this you need to download a second file explorer. I used cx file explorer and it worked fine afterward.

He has a more detailed video for the rg556 on his channel, I’m using that and this to kind of do the setup best. He deletes stuff to add back because he doesn’t trust the version of software anbernic adds themselves, I believe. Just provides a clean slate to customize himself. I recommend you watch the rg556 video though, even if you don’t have the device.

Same here. i think we may have bought a newer version of the 405m where everything was set up different. For aether i found my bios in the ps2 folder of the sd card i got with my console but some of the rg405m’s dont come with the sd card

You can use retroarch just by swiping the screen down and choosing game mode on, this dude is just weird and wanted to delete and redownload everything himself!

Since this guide was made before GammaOS release I guess, is it correct to skip the "debloat" part after the GammaOS update? From what I saw GammaOS comes "clean" with just Retroarch + Daijisho

Just a quick question before I do though, when debloating, how come you uninstall all the emulation apps only to then re-install the same ones? You said something about how the pre-installed ones don't auto update from the Google Play store but aren't they the same apps? I'm slightly confused...

Depending on if you followed the guide to the end, we swap to Daijisho as the home app - as the home screen on Android just becomes useless. So pushing and holding the home button always brings you back to Daijisho, and you can use the Apps tab to load any non-game apps if you want. If you want to use the Android home screen instead for whatever reason, just change the default home app back to Quickstep.

Ok, first off bro, you are a beast at this, and I'm so glad for it. I just got the new 405v and I was pretty much able to follow your tutorial beat for beat with only a few discrepancies along the way. It took me two whole days to get all of this done, mostly cause my kids wouldn't give me 5 minutes at my computer and I had to do a full reorganizing of my roms... I've got a good question for you though... so on my device, I have a button on the left side that when pressed jumps me into a front-end, I think it's retro arch? But it's sloppy. I don't like how the rooms are just dumped on the memory card, the file paths are a mess, names, box art, it's all trash. But this daijisho, it's clean. Is there a way I can make it so that button launches this app instead of the trash one anbernic has on there? If I can pull that off, I'm set. Please do a video like this for the 405v if you can!

Hey, no you can't, but if you use the home button in the center, you can map that to daijisho in the android app settings.

If you do this set up and delete all the apps, are you able to play the SNES, MD, SMS and NES games? I've afraid to delete them and not be able to play those games that came with the SD card. I'm also new at this whole emulation consoles and have no clue what to do. It's also great to see a fellow Calgarian is making videos. (=

Don't worry. I'm 62 and planning on debloating my pretty, new RG405M a weekend or two from now (I can see it will take a few hours). I'm still using (and will continue to use) my RG351V. You'll get attached to your retro handheld. And, addressing your concerns, I suspect the Anbernic user community will come up with some more refined setups during the coming months. Keep an eye on the forums, such as Reddit.

This was easier to set up than expected - thank you! This is a long shot, but I received my RG405M a few days ago and on occasion, the screen starts doing ghost inputs where there are random screen touch presses. When it happens, it's very hard to override and control it in order to restart or shutdown the device which seems to clear the issue. I've seen a few reddit posts about it and I'm on the fence if this is something I can fix / live with, or should just do a return/exchange. It's not often that it happens and I can't nail down what triggers this weird behavior.

I purchased it new off Amazon. I'm afraid if I return it with my configurations and Daijisho still on it, they will blame the issue on me.

Awesome video. I had no idea what I was doing when I bought this device and this got me up and running. On a slightly unrelated note, do you have any idea how to get the trigger inputs to work when playing on Xbox cloud? It registers all button inputs (including bumpers) except for triggers.

Use the xbplay app instead, it's better and triggers work. You'll see an example in my review.

I prefer MelonDS over DraStic nowadays because it's still in development, has retro achievements and they're about to add upscaling, but it'll be good to install both and see which you prefer.

It's so annoying that the stock Android still doesn't have a batch uninstall mode, which I had submitted for "feature request" almost a decade ago, and you have to repeat the stupid confirmation process for each app to delete.

What amazing timing as I just purchased the 405M and have been searching for a setup guide for the past 2 days and here it is and my 405 arrived tomorrow. Great job! Hey, you'll want to have Android format your SD card first. Then, just create a roms folder and I use these as my folder names - db.libretro.com/. Matching the libretro names. You can boot up with your roms in already, no issue there.

Hey, so you can set them up properly and because at least one is pirated. You can toggle using citra mmj. This was pre GammaOS, you can do the same steps after Gamma is installed.

No, you don't. You'll just have an out of date app so worse performance.

Hi Joey...I'm relatively new to gaming and much of the video I don't understand but I just purchased the 405m and want to do it the right way. I'm slowly making my way through your step by step but have run into some road blocks. I don't think I have ROMS on the device or any games. When I got to 11:20ish on the video for redream. I couldn't pull it up. Also had the same problem with Yaba and Aether. How would I go about getting them? Download them? Where would I go to do that? Sorry for all the questions. As I said learning as I go. LOL.....Thank you very much for an info and your knowledge on all of this. Doug

Thanks for this guide! I'm curious though, what is the downside to just using retroarch cores for everything? I guess I'd just prefer to have everything consolidated in one place. Plus I want my game saves to sync with my PC where I'm already using retroarch exclusively

It depends on the emulators, sometimes you can just rename the file extension and it works, other times you need a converter (lots online). Duckstation ones should be easy enough with the memory card editor, N64 might need the conversion.

Hello. I just got a 405M. I transferred all files from the included 128gb to a 512gb card. I added my own Mame roms, but almost all of the ones I add, Retroarch crashes. Any tips? Are only some roms compatible? Thanks!

Nice setup video! Got mine a few days ago. Only thing I can complain about is I've noticed slight audio lag in basically all emulators I've tried... am I the only one experiencing that? I've tried messing with audio latency and synchronization settings in retroarch, and I think I've improved it slightly but it's still perceptible... is this something you've noticed?

Sorry for the delay, missed this one. Nope, haven't had audio delay personally, but I might not be susceptible to it. It's completely noticeable with Bluetooth audio for example, but otherwise, looks good to me.

I have noticed audio lag with all emulators in Android since it came out on every device from weak to super powerful. It is an Android problem, their audio drivers were shit and still are. Google refuses to fix it. Those that say there is no audio lag just don't notice it. It is really easy to spot just look at an on screen animation like a bullet shot or explosion, you always hear the sound after the graphic effect.

Ok, I'm just getting my feet wet into the emulation world and I bought the 405M to get started but one thing Joey kind of glossed over that lost me was he kept saying "import your ROM folders" like he was naturally assuming we had those. Are these something that the 405 is importing from your playstore apps (i.e. with Android playstore you already have Retroarch, Aether, PPSSPP) all your ROMs are on there and the 405 just syncs with your playstore profile? Where are my ROM folders? How do I create a ROM folder? Do I need to download all these apps on my computer and then look for ROMs on the internet? So many questions...

I accidentally mapped fast forward toggle to r1 and also fast forward Hold to r1. How do I delete the toggle?

I just got mine today and getting to the Redream setup, I realized the sd card seems to be completely different than yours. It doesn’t have a rom folder and the Dreamcast folder only has like 6 files on it and the name of the folder is different too, it’s just “dreamcast”. Idk what to do

Hey, I just have different games as I don't use the cards that come with the device. You just want to point redream to your dreamcast folder.

Just purchased a 405V. Do you recommend picking up a new micro-sd card for it as well?

If you're like me and don't like using hotkey enablers, you can set the back button to open Retroarch menu with some fenangling. I managed to do it by selecting it in the options, then swapping back to daijsho while the prompt to hold a button comes up. THEN, swap back to Retroarch while HOLDING the back button. It will let you assign it, and won't auto-return to Daijsho. Weird workaround, but it works! I also set Quitting the game to L3+R3. This works great! Especially if you also play on hardcore mode in retroachievements and don't need save/load state and rewind buttons.

for a game like ocarina of time 3ds, is there a way to have the gameplay screen be fullscreen and then tap the start button to switch to the item screen?

So newcomer question here. If this comes with a preloaded SD do I do this full set up with the sd in the system or wait until it’s all set up, then install the sd. thanks.

Thanks for the great guide/ How do I switch the A and B buttons to the PS style so the B is confirm and A is back? Other guides seems to suggest menu options that I can't find. Thanks

I'm not on stock OS anymore, but should be the swipe down from top quick panel, and I think it's the ns mode tile.

Great guide! Thank you! - My only question is that for the SNES9x core (SNES9x - Current), it doesn't show up in my Core Downloader. I'm unsure if there's something I'm missing or if my installation might've been incorrect? Thank you otherwise!

I think they removed the current wording, should still be there though.

i downloaded the version you gave in description, i followed every steps for MMJR but the classic controller (followed your mapping) is not working for me...what will i do ? i'cant play any WII games in my RG405v... kindly help !!

I managed to get the first games to load but I was told my SD card would have more then 5k games and it’s only showing me like 200 do I have to connect to the wifi to download the rest?

I tried to back up the card that came with this and while it seemed that the games transferred, when I put the copied card in and go to access them on the console, it says "Game not found"... When I put the original card in, it seems to work fine. Are there size limitations on these cards? Any suggestions?

just got the RG405M, what is the easiest way to download additional rom game files on a mac and transfer them over to the SD card that is formatted for windows?

How are you able to delete apps by dragging and dropping? That option isn't available for me. Does something need to be enabled? Thanks!

On Anbernic 405M, I have dolphin MMJR 11505, Wii games show controls on the screen. How to get rid of on screen controls? I have mapped controls on buttons and that works fine but how to disable buttons on screen

Hi, I saw all your videos about the rg405m and I just got one, but now to set it up I wanted to see if you could help me decide, should I install GammaOS and then follow this setup guide? or should I just follow this setup guide and forget about GammaOS?

I have two questions : - I can't download Redream because it tell me that I use a android version that is too recent (android 12 ?) - I can't disable the auto update for Aether, it don't show me the option when I click to the 3 points Thanks again, I continue to watch the rest of the video ;)

Great video and super helpful, but upon trying to update the already installed apps it will not allow me to. Is there any current fix for not being allowed to download anything from the play store?

That's basically the reason for this guide. You can't unless you install them again properly.
