Anbernic RG351MP -- First Impressions & Comparison

Ойындар

Seemingly out of nowhere, the RG351MP ("Metal Pro") dropped from the sky. This device has the oft-requested 4:3 aspect / 640x480 display but in a horizontal form factor. So is this device getting, or would it be better to grab an older (and cheaper) handheld instead? Let's find out.

I'm really hoping Anbernic keeps this same style and size when they upgrade the chipset. Such a perfect form factor. I'm afraid this perfect size and feel may dissappear because of people obsessing over bigger screens. 3 and a half inches is perfect to me. Might as well use your cell phone if you're going any bigger than that.

I understand it's probably a personal preference thing, but exactly for that I want to point out that ever since I've gotten my hands on my RG351V back then, I found it to be _extremely_ comfortable, and I now find the RG351P, which I had previously enjoyed, to be sub-par instead - and would probably likely find a RG350M or RG351MP less comfortable. Since I'm mostly playing GB, GBC and some NES/SNES, performance is perfect for me on the RG351V and I find it the most comfortable. Sleep mode works very well for me on 351elec, so if I _have_ to find the one thing I'd still wish for their next generation, it'd be that I miss the bigger A, B (+ X, Y) buttons of the original Game Boy. The DMGs buttons will always just be perfect to me, which is why I'm still sometimes eyeing LCL's Game Boy Pi stuff - but it's a tad expensive (more than double the price of the RG351V), and it's got its own issues like long boot times and, as far as I know, no sleep functionality.

for a sharper upscale in retroarch: the 2x prescale shader is made of two passes, go down to where it says "shader #1 filter" and press right to change it to "nearest" instead of linear, then make sure you press "apply changes" above. You could also set the first pass (shader #0) scale to a value larger than 2x, but it might affect performance.

Russ, I’ve just finished watching this video which led me to your in-depth review on the powkiddy rgb10 max. In this video comparing it to the rg351mp you really seem to rate the powkiddy quite high overall, even saying it was your personal favorite. In the powkiddy review, I know it was 4 months ago, but you seem to sing a different tune. Granted the powkiddy in this video is black versus the orange in the original, but I’m interested in hearing what might have changed within that 4 month period of time to change your mind and really herald the powkiddy over the alternatives. I was originally holding out for the rg351mp as my first device, but after release I’m a little disappointed, so I’m looking at the rest of the lineup for this chipset, as a first. Also helps that the powkiddy last I checked is in the $80 range. Big fan by the way. Thanks!

I don't know anyone with the 352v but have long thin fingers and hands... It seems many with large hands are finding the 351v actually ergonomic friendly? She has been around with me a while now. I won't leave her for a new model just yet 🤣. I can't see the necessity to upgrade. As others have said if there is a leap in performance going forward to a device that can play dreamcast, Saturn and ps2 flawlessly I will go for that, but right now my rg351p is chocked full of final burn neo, gb, gbc, gba, genesis, snes, nes, dreamcast and n64 goodness. Jees if someone had told my 20 year old self i would have all these systems and games on a handheld device that plays great I would have laughed at them! Great review Russ, i like the rating system you use to compare the devices 👍🏻 It‘s really a bit of a shame that Anbernic didn‘t even prepare a spot for a WiFi module. At least it would have given us the chance to manually a a module and upgrade the device significantly. I share the same impression with you, that they didn‘t even plan to give this device internal WiFi. All facts lead to this. Beside that HDMI didn‘t come back, what i don‘t really miss too much, but would have been a small step forward again. I hope to get my hands on this device to review it myself, because at least for gaming on 4:3 ratio based systems like the PS1 and some native ports it should be good.

None of the other next-gen devices are going to fit in my pocket, so I pulled the trigger on this. To me this is a key benefit that I wish was mentioned more often in reviews. I have plenty of machines to play every kind of emulator and game under the sun on. Problem is I can't easily carry them around with me. This includes the Switch - it sits at home on its dock most of the time because of its size. So many new amazing devices are coming out in the next year, but none of them interest me because all of them will sit on a shelf collecting dust due to their size. This is why I want a rg351mp instead of an rgb10max, or even an rg552. I don't have a use for a 'mobile' game device that I can't slip into my pocket.

I love the videos and I absolutely love watching videos about retro consoles and how great they are. I keep watching thinking some device will finally entice me to buy one, but every time I get excited, I keep thinking that my psp will pretty much do everything that most of these inexpensive retro consoles will do already, and I have 4 psps already, so I end up not getting anything. Sure, none of my psp had a beautiful ips panel but they all have a decent screen, especially my psp3000 that I recently picked up real cheap. Maybe I'll end up getting the steam deck which can emulate much more like ps2 and become my portable PC, which to me would be worth the money since I'm due for a new laptop or desktop anyway, or maybe something else will come up by release and I'll be stuck in this state of indecisiveness. Gahhhh. Thanks for the video. Neat device and a great job at reviewing, as usual.

I already have 4 devices bit I'm also looking forward to the 552. The powkiddy A20 and X18s. Having a bunch of these is nice because no matter where I am in the house I can just pick something up and start playing lol also it's good because when a battery is dying in one, you just pick up the next and keep playing.

The missing internal wifi doesn't bother me at all. The Master System and Game Gear games being in the wrong folders bugs me slightly, but what really concerns me is the sound distortion. I was interested in upgrading from my RG350M since I have noticed slight stuttering on 2 of my favorite PS1 games and I heard they improved the conductive rubber pads for the buttons on the RG351MP, which I feel are kind of cheap on the RG350M. How high did the volume have to be before you heard the distortion? Is it all the way? Half way? Great review by the way.

Cheers Russ, nice thoughtful preview as usual. I like it and if I had money to burn I'd get it, it feels like it might be a classic of it's type, but ... the price and timing do seem less than ideal. I mean that's nearly the price of a Source Audio C4, and who doesn't want to make their guitar sound like an exploding spaceship, right? :)

Hey! Thanks for putting out a first impressions, I only just found your channel a couple of weeks ago and decided to buy a retro handheld this week so I would have missed the existence of the MP otherwise. I had an RGB10 metal modded on order but I got a little impatient and this seemed like a good buy. Do you see yourself or the community at large modding this one much at all? Inspired by your RGB10 modded build, would an iPhone8 speaker and bigger battery be an improvement here, or even possible? Also wondering what most people would recommend for custom firmware here... Smooth clean interface with lots of box art is my style big time. Got my MP arriving tomorrow! Early I hope!

However, she has long fingers and I have absolute bear paws so maybe bigger hands equates to less discomfort overall? IDK lol The fake woodgrain edition is easily the most classy-looking retro handheld device on the market (Imho...as someone who grew up with the GB Color) and because I play jrpgs, beatemups, platformers, fighting games, and shmups predominately, I actually don't mind the lack of dual analogs. I have the RG351P, the first versions, the one that has the internal Wifi but in mine it does not have that greenish tone on the screen. It's strange. The distortion of the sound when jumping mario is due to the fact that you have the maximum volume from the software, beyond 130%, that is why it is distorted. That happens in all except Open Dingux.

RG351V owner here....you nailed it as always. I am not fully satisfied with the ergonomics of RG351V, but while RG351MP is almost the answer for 4:3 retro gaming.... this thing comes way too late, no internal wifi, and comes with a heavy and expensive metal shell.....if it was released 3 months ago, in a plastic shell, and with internal wifi, priced at 30 to 40 USD less (around 110 to 120 USD), then hell yes i am sold, but now? I already owned the RG351V, nah i would wait for the next gen devices that could emulate PSP and some other consoles (DC or N64) in full speed, the retro market is really lackluster for the past years, same chip, different models.
