Anatoly Yakovenko on Solana’s Astounding Recovery and Its Future Plans - Ep. 578

Unchained is running its annual survey to better serve you.
Please take our annual survey 👉 www.surveymonkey.com/r/unchai... 👈
Solana’s native token SOL has been one of the best-performing cryptos of the year, up more than 500% so far, but you wouldn’t have guessed that would be the case given how closely tied the blockchain was to FTX, which held huge amounts of SOL and was a big supporter of the platform. The blockchain also experienced numerous outages in 2022. But Anatoly Yakovenko, Solana’s co-founder, says the discipline imposed by FTX’s collapse, as well as improvements to the technology, have made Solana stronger.

On this episode of Unchained, Yakovenko talks about the impact of FTX’s collapse, his early impressions of Sam Bankman-Fried, the SEC’s designation of SOL as a security, how entrepreneurs are leaving the U.S. because of the regulatory risk, SOL’s share of the stablecoin market, and why he thinks it’s inevitable that finance will eventually run on something like Solana.
Show highlights:
🔹How the Solana ecosystem weathered the FTX crisis
🔹How FTX’s collapse was like ripping off a band-aid for Solana
🔹Anatoly's initial impression of SBF as a “super genius”
🔹Why, despite SOL's strong 2023 performance, the Solana ecosystem hasn't experienced a corresponding growth in active developers
🔹What factors Anatoly believes contribute to the relatively low number of daily active wallet addresses in Solana
🔹How Solana addressed and rectified the outage issues that were so frequent in previous years
🔹Why Anatoly draws a parallel between Ethereum and Windows 95, and Solana and Windows 2000
🔹Why he's not worried about Jump Crypto building a client for the blockchain
🔹The ongoing debate within Solana on open-source versus closed-source culture, and the potential for future shifts
🔹How the Solana Foundation is handling the SEC's classification of SOL as a security
🔹Whether there's a trend of developers and founders relocating from the United States in search of a more supportive ecosystem
🔹Why Solana holds a low market share of stablecoins across various blockchains, and the implications of this trend
🔹Why Anatoly considers trading volume a more critical metric than Total Value Locked (TVL) in assessing blockchain success
🔹How Web3 gaming has been flourishing on Solana
🔹Why Anatoly is confident that DeFi will find its rightful place on the Solana network
🔹The future plans for the Saga phone after its market challenges
🔹What Anatoly thinks is the number one focus for Solana for the near term

Excellent interview. This explains the use of Solana in applications I didn’t understand - I.e. NFT minting costs. I also appreciate the brief discussion in the Coinbase lawsuit at 28:50 and regulation issues.

This video should’ve been everyone’s heads up… 🎉 Solana for the win 🏆 Having the phone as a NFT phone is more than enough. Including the gaming projects as someone in the comments mentioned. Great interview

what anatoly is saying is that tvl is just capital sat doing nothing, low tvl with high volume means defi is actually been used more because of efficiency to be able to move funds around etc etc.

Tron 24h volume: 3.89m Solana 24h volume: 545.72m Yet Tron has a higher TVL by 8x. I think that's what he means by, it's just useless. It's sitting there doing nothing.

“There is no way this tech can disrupt traditional finance if it is more expensive and slower”, “Nobody gonna disrupt finance for the feel of decentralisation..” - Such a wrong statements! Slower and more expensive because Ethereum unlike Solana didn’t compromise on security and decentralisation in their approach solving blockchain trilema, and yes exactly for the sake of decentralisation traditional finance will be disrupted! But this tech is definitely not going to disrupt finance if it’s not going to be totally secure and 100% reliable! Most DeFi on Ethereum don’t require to be fast and speed will not change much, also paying $20 for transaction is extremely cheap if you are moving institutional money, security plays far more important role there. Comparing Solana to Eth is like comparing Mercedes to Toyota anyways, it’s a different products for different purposes.

Totally agreed. It seems like to me that Solana wishes to "disrupt" traditional finance simply by being the new rails, but doing nothing to curb the systematic problems of centralization. What good is a crypto financial world when powerful nations and corporations can make the chain place limitations and censor. The reason why Ethereum is "slower" (this problem is being solved quickly) is because it's taking the hard road of decentralization seriously and are not compromising on a system that ennables global markets to emerge free of censorious actors. The fact that every Solana validator needs to by KYCd is just an open door invitation to regulators to control the chain at any moment.

It’s like saying that Tesla will never disrupt the automobile market and the space sector. ETH got a lot of things right but limited itself tremendously to is path of scaling. My point is that ETH will always be there but Solana will likely be the tech who will be able to actually handle mass adoption of the tech. You seem to care a lot of what the institutions will use to transfer money.. I care about what the tech and the apps the world will actually use with the blockchain tech. ETH can’t even do orderbooks and you think defi will mostly run on ETH? Respectfully, I don’t think so. I’m a dev and don’t even have the funds to build on ETH or won’t waste my time building on a L2 that won’t scale in the long run. Here to change world not to to pump the pockets of the wealthiest

@@dangerous2k and yet you are ready to go all in on one type of scaling solution (again centralized) simply because its fast today? The same system that is not financially stable and doesn't look like it ever will be? Do you even realize how the whole solana ecosystem runs on subsidies? Ethereum is completely financially sustainable TODAY and has let the free market decide on the best scaling solutions via L2s. There is no tech that solana can have that ethereum cannot.

@@dangerous2k After Terra Luna collapse DeFi whales will not trust any chain that has not stood the test of time, and there is only one SC platform that did, so for this reason majority of DeFi activity will remain on Ethereum for near future. There are many pathways to scale ethereum and core dev team is quite productive following roadmap. Ethereum main issue is not tech, but its application. DeFi and Solidity language are only few years old, and unfortunately the knowledge of smart contract security of average dev is very low, and there are only 100 people in the world who can properly audit contracts, in addition no one really knows the extent of the code workings, so nobody knows how to build completely secure protocols. But it’s even worse for other chains. I’m dev as well btw

  • @dangerous2k

It’s actually false. There’s actually a lot of tech that can’t be done on ETH but it possible on Solana. Micropayments,DePin, compressed NFts ( mint 1 000 000 NFTs for 100$ ) and many other use case. What’s your definition of centralization? Hardware requirements for full node ? I would say that requirements 32 ETH to run a full node is actually more expensive then running a solana full node. I would add that the gas fees is in my humble opinion is kind of a centralized aspect of ETH. I don’t use ETH because I simply can’t afford it. What I’m saying is as a dev I want to build on Solana and not on ETH because the stuff that I want to do can’t actually be done on ETH because of the tech and because of the fees required to actually build on ETH. Solana is far from perfect but it’s a lot younger then ETH.. Solana is still in beta because it’s only have one client but with firedancer will be fault tolerant. Basically what I’m saying is ETH is not gone die, but Solana will likely outperform ETH because the actual useful apps that will and is build on it. You don’t realize that dev on Solana never talk about scalability. They actually only talk about how they can build the killer app that will onboard the world into blockchains
