Anand Giridharadas: College Bribery Scandal Highlights How America is Rigged for Wealthy & Powerful

As the fallout continues over the elite college admissions scandal that investigators nicknamed “Operation Varsity Blues,” we speak with journalist Anand Giridharadas, author of “Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World.” His book examines how the so-called elite class of America have worked the system to maintain and consolidate power and wealth, even while claiming to help people and “change the world” through charity. On Wednesday, Giridharadas tweeted: “The college bribery scam is not a college bribery scam. It is a master class in how America-governed by a cheater, ruled by rule breakers, managed by a class that confuses its privilege for merit-functions.”

Especially in the arts - it takes a huge amount of staying power to hang in while you get from doing things for "exposure" to making money in creative fields, and if you are not rich, you can literally damage your health trying to basically work survival gigs while you do promotional and speculative art in hopes that you can get a paid gig doing your art later. @@MM-nh8ez

@@hollywoodartchick9740 Yep. And people know they can take advantage of creatives while they try to make their portfolio or whatever, so they will get as much free work out of them as possible. It's 10,000x easier if you are rich and know you'll never have to worry about eating, housing, etc. And having money tends to translate to having connections, which is how people get exposure... so yeah, you find 100 rich people in the arts for every 1 who isn't.

The Aspen Institute's Board of Trustees reads like a telephone book of privilege. Let's also consider that "freedom" and "liberty" are synonyms for "privilege". If we believe G.W. Bush, al-Qaeda hates the us for America's "privilege".

But our University's finances are organized such that in order to balance the books we calculate a large percentage of you will drop out because you're kinda stupid and unmotivated. When I was in English 101 the prof handed everyone their first essays back that they wrote in University and said, "I take my responsibilities as an undergraduate professor seriously. So I personally read and mark everyone my students essays. I don't hand them off to a T.A. And after reading these essays my first question is (long pause and perplexed look)....What are you people doing here?"

The current system, I would say, contributed to the falling test scores, economic standing, moral standing of the US. All those jokes about Asian kids always doing homework, ALSO apply to kids actually in Asia. Should we not build up our public schools and then place deserving kids from the Rustbelt, Appalachia, the Ghettos & Barrios into leadership training institutions? That is the only way I see to MAGA, not powdering over a corrupt system.

Several years ago, I taught fourth grade at a charter school in DC. I had a little disobedient, disruptive, arrogant little boy in my class. L call him Joe. Joe really thought that he was better than the other students. For example, he would tease kids about their lunches, clothes and their academic ability. Sometimes, Joe would jump the line in front of a physically challenged student. And, when students gave wrong answers Joe would embarrass them by making derogatory comments. Joe was slightly above some students in some areas. But, not enough to write home about because he was tutored daily. One day Joe answered a question wrong and another boy berated him the same way he had done to other students for months. This time, the whole class participated joined in by laughing and making mean remarks. Joe boohooed. He cried for at least 30 min. The next day his father came to see me and, blamed me for the whole incident. I explained why the incident occurred. His father ignored his son's participation. He left angry. He said that his son was sensitive and, that if it happened again he would whole me responsible. I lost my cool. I told him that I held him responsible for raising a disobedient insensitive spoil brat. His father became irate and reported me to the principal. The principal's attitude toward me changed. Afterwards, Joe's father blamed his son's low grades on my method of teaching even though other students made As and Bs. The principle tried to convince me to make all kinds of exceptions for this kids grades and behaviors. One day, one of the teachers pulled me aside. She told me "you have to be very very care how you handle Joe. I replied "I treat him the same as I do other students. She said "I know. But, several teachers are not here anymore because of his father. His father donates large sums of money to the school each year. And, he wants everyone to treat Joe special. They want you to pass him even when he fails. I just don't want you to get into trouble". I found out later that Joe had failed several times in DC public schools. Then, his father took enrolled him in the charter school so he could buy his way through ELEMENTARY school. Already as a fourth grader, Joe (and his father) are not well liked. I have never met a black man that arrogant in my life. Even as an oppressed black man he thought that he was entitled because of his money.

In Utopia alone, nepotism does not exist. Here, in the REAL world, we are subjected to the human weakness; overwhelming desire to advance yourself and therefore, your dear ones. The western capitalist system allows a voice to judge it’s failings. Something you will appreciate once you have lived under any other system, with its tyranny.

These parents need to go to PRISON!!! They have now made a mockery of the education system. They have stolen some poor children’s chance of getting into the elite school of their dreams because they cannot afford the tuition. Using someone’s sport spot is horrendous. I guess I assumed rich peoples children were legitimately smart because they went to excellent elementary, junior high and high school. They have money for tutors so they MUST be smart. Well now I am seeing mediocrity is the standard for many. This MUST be taken seriously!!! A black mother was sent to jail for using her parents address to get her child into a better school because the school in her district was horrible. If she went to jail, this judge better make sure all of them get time in jail.
