Thanks for this nice in-depth review. I have been using ANAN radios for many years and totally agree with you that the 7000DLE MkII is tops and without equal. Started out in SDR with the Flex 3000 and have moved through several Flex's, which were also great radios. But this one, along with the outstanding Thetis and Protocol 2 firmware, leaves Flex in the dust. Sold my Flex 6500 shortly after getting this and have not looked back. Pure Signal has been implemented on the Anan for several years. It should be on ALL radios but so far ANAN is the only radio to implement it. Kudos to the software/firmware team that has made this radio tops among many fine radios. 73 de Arnie W8DU

I have been silent off the air for years and really want to get back into ham radio. 21 years ao I moved out of the US from California where I had a home in the mountains with two tower and a clear view to the Pacific Ocean from 200 miles away, with lots of old classic gear. I split my time between the mountain ranch that had zero noise and a home just north of the Golden gate bridge where the noise was an issue and neighbors not keen on visible ant. When I moved I brought a lot of old test gear, for audio and RF but live in the city center second-floor apartment in the historic center of beautiful St Petersburg Russia and love it here. But the noise level and lack of ability for more than a magnetic loop antenna caused me to drift away from ham radio for the first time since first licensed in 1959 at 10yo. The only two rigs I have here is an Elecraft K2 and a Kenwood TS50s. So all this SDR business is very interesting to me and your videos have been a real eye-opener. Thank you. Unless I move to a top-floor apartment with access to the roof I am stuck with limited operation with the loop. I have a very rustic cabin in the woods like almost all families here, where they relax and live with few luxuries in the summer or where the kids and grandmother tend gardens and orchards...but lots of room for antennas and no noise. SDR sounds like a very versatile lightweight solution. My income is a tiny fraction of what it was in California but the cost of living is about 1/15th as much with a better quality of life here. I have 3 small businesses plus one with 68 employees that is very seasonal in tourism so closed since the end of 2019 September end of tour season due to the border being closed. The ANAN 7000DLE II sounds like the perfect solution. Audio quality is something I take an interest in since my main industry was as a recording engineer and designing equipment for recording studios. I had a large 3 studio complex for 25 years where we recorded 197 gold and platinum albums and one of my businesses here is a repair shop for pro audio equipment. Even the RF test gear is used on audio gear, like a wireless mic, and retained my Motorola R2008D service monitor. When I moved I gave my large service center for pro audio to the employees, the largest specialty repair shop in the country for pro audio. My second retirement did not last long before starting new businesses in my new adopted home. I have traveled a lot, 91 countries, and having a non-descript box like the 7000LDE would raise a lot fewer eyebrows with border crossings than an obvious transmitter/receiver. One of my small businesses here is a photo studio and I have a large collection of lenses and cameras I have replaced in my working kit with Mirrorless so selling off the lenses I no longer use would pay for any new rig. Quality lenses are expensive, most were $1500-7000 each and there are 18 excess lenses. Thanks for your very informative videos! 73 Stan RA/KM6XZ

Enjoyed your review of the 7000DLE. I am currently using a FL 6600M, which I like a lot. But, I am also very interested in the Anan radios. I bought a Hermes Lite 2 just to see how well NR2 works. I was really surprised. I could tune in a signal that was almost unreadable on either radio. The Noise reduction on the Flex could clear it up to a fair amount. But, NR2 in OpenHPSDR completely brought the signal out clear with no background hiss! Thanks for your review. James WD5GWY

Yes, the NR2 is shockingly good. Then add the phase noise canceller, the interpolative NB, the suite of TX processing and the TX pre-distortion... and it is very hard to beat.

I got mine two weeks ago and I love it. The audio processing built into it is incredible and while I was watching this I hooked up a lousy 2m dipole just as a goof to RX2 and used diversity to totally wipe out a few different known RFI sources coming from the house against the reference of my 260' doublet. I can't wait to hook up a bigger antenna on RX2 to help null noise sources.

How do you interact with the SDR Radio? Do you have a computer that Runs it? or do you just plug in a monitor and use it natively? What computer specs do you need? Windows, Mac, ?? Looks like a great alternative to so many other brands.

@@user-ss6zt2mo1l The main piece of hardware on my 7000 DLE MkII is where all the antennas are connected, power, potentially microphones, PTT etc. It's just an aluminum box with a power switch, a couple LED lights and a bunch of ports on it, no displays of any kind. The controls of the radio are in software, as is the audio processing. The data gets to the PC via ethernet cable for the data link. You control the radio with the Thetis or PowerSDRmrx (old) software. The software is free and open source, you have to learn to use it on your own. You need a PC running Windows to run the software and it needs to be a reasonably modern/fast PC to work well. Your display is the application running on your computer.

@@user-ss6zt2mo1l I have the Anan, the SunSDR2 DX, and a TS-590SG all here. The Anan wins handily. All are good rigs, the Sun is a strong contender but the Anan diversity and NR2 are unstoppable for noise mitigation.

Because of all what you described about the ANAN, I said farewell to my Flexradio (had the 6500 and 6600). The Flex'ses in itself are very good, but the dreadful software called "Smart SDR" is utterly boring, user unfriendly with all the hidden pop-up sh*tty menu's and is totally uncustomizable. The Thetis software gives me most of the functionality at a glance on the screen. And when it comes to listening, as you pointed out, the noise reduction, NR2 setting, is unsurpassed ! It is a superb TRX. Connected via LAN to my router, it also gives me the pleasure of being able to do "general coverage SW receiving" from my relax chair, using my TV as a monitor. It is one awesome machine, that is here to stay (next to my also very liked TS-890) Your review i now about 3 years old, but ever so valid ! Thanks and 73from Holland - de PC7H

Hi Bob, another consideration for the Apache labs kit is that much of the system is software, so all updates gradually evolve this radio.. As we know, many other radios have minor updates only. When you have Apache Labs kit, it evolves. I started of with a second hand 100D.... which is an old radio now... but still performs incredibly well.. any viewers who wish to dip their feet in the water may well find that purchasing one of the older models to see if it suits them might well be the way to go.. I now have the 8000DLE... its by far the best radio I have ever and I have had many of the top radios over the last 10-15 yrs. Only caveat I would add is that you do need to be computer savvy and use the Apache and other forums to build your knowledge.This takes some time, but boy is it worth it...a game changer IMHO.

Absolutely Martin- Best radio I have ever owned. Better than TS-990s, Flex Signature series, FTdx-101D, IC-7610...you name it. I've had three Firmware updates so far from W5WC here in Arkansas. Incremental improvements. And flaws in other radios that we grew to accept like: When your Noise Blanker is on, you get splatter from nearby signals...Watery sounding Digital Noise Reduction...Transmit spectral purity that met the FCC specs, but didn't exceed the specs by much... all fixed in the Anans. All heads and shoulders above the rest. Yup, you have to watch the videos and set it up initially just like it says. Then spend about 6 weeks customizing it exactly to your liking... and then none of your other HF radios will have any purpose!

Hi Bob. I just got an Apache Labs ANAN-7000DLE MKIII transceiver and loving it so far! I think I'm going to have to sell my fairly new Yaesu FTdx 101D, as I'm not sure I'll use it again! It was easy to configure. I also have the Elecraft MIC you referenced, as borrowed from my KX3, and am using a pair of older BOSE desktop PC speakers. So far, I'm getting good signal reports. I just connected mine to a Mercury IIIs amp I got about 3 months ago, after waiting for it. The wait time for the ANAN was only about a month. Lots to learn on this one, but that will give me something to do. I'm running a DX Commander multi band vertical with it right now, but also have an end fed random length antenna I need to configure with it, so I can experiment with the diversity receive. After almost 3 years after this review, are you still using this rig, and is it your favorite? You might need to do an updated review. Thanks for this review! 73 Mike ND7E

Absolutely still love it! I use the IC-7610 for casual SSB, but the Anan is totally still king. If you can get a HexBeam or other beam on it...you are then at the top of the pile. Enjoy!

The thing that challenges people is the PC end. If you are familiar with routers, IP's, NAT's and the like...no problemo. Even if only so-so with networking, the path to success is easy and clearly documented. It is far past the early experimental days and pretty polished. I think manufacturing is moving to the US now too. (my state!) I wanted to do some 6 meter meteor scatter yesterday. Tried the Icom 7610..., IC-705..no way were they going to erase the grinding static I had from some neighborhood source. Pumped up the 7000 and it's noise blanker erased it. What a radio.

I'd love to see a CW, QSK demo with the MKII

Hi Bob. Kudos and thanks for your excellent review. I'm just about to pull the trigger on the ANAN-7000DLE MKII HF & 6M 100W SDR Transceiver **i7 CPU** because I no longer have any active Windows machines in the house-just MACs. My question involves logging. I currently use an IC7300 with an iMAC 21 running Rumlog and the log populates automatically just needing the call sign and report. I'm wondering how I would handle the logging the the Anan; do you think I'll still end up using the iMAC for stand-alone logging or might I be able to load another logging program into the Anan's onboard Windows computer? Bob- I don't use a e-logger. Got them installed, but still enjoy graphite and cellulose logging. You can do almost anything with the Anan interface. I'm sure you'll find a way to elegantly do your e-logging. Welcome to the Anan Adventure!

Hi Bob, I like to get more of your opinion on this radio? I'm looking for an SDR and trying to decide which radio would be best, I'm interested in a quiet radio, able to filter noise, and able to use receiver diversity. I was looking at ICOM, but I love the software on Apache and Flex. Any thoughts? Do you have any other videos or information on Apache? Is there support for Apache radios?

Well, if you want an easier path, get a Flex. If you want ultimate performance, get the Anan. Flex offers great support. Anan is more experimental and open-source on the software. It will run several software packages, but everyone uses the Thetis. W1AEX has a great website on setting up the radio. The manual will get you going, but his site will walk you to perfection. Ultimately, the Flex is boring. The Anan is a cutting-edge radio. With that comes a certain amount of risk...financial too. Just depends on if you would buy a Mustang GT or a Tesla. Safety vs. Amazing.

Hello does the Thetis software runs native in Linux (Ubuntu,Centos,etc)?

I gotta say Bob. I'm impressed. Still not gonna sell the Flex! 🙂

Arguably the best radio of modern time. But it does come with a hefty price tag. And yes, dukestah has his sounding amazing. Pure signal is a win win.

The price is actually VERY good, in the realm of flagship ham radios (the 7KDLE is in the top tier of Rob Sherwood's list). Nothing else anywhere near its price can touch it for features and performance. The PureSignal feature alone is found nowhere else (which is strange because the code is open source, so any one of the big name brands can incorporate it into their radios but they haven't).

Does it do SO2R? How about the software ecosystem? Do you need to use CW Skimmer and limit the skimming bandwidth? I am sure it is a good radio, and would love to try it somehow, but just by looking at your presentation, I doubt the software is polished as much for DXing and contesting as the software for the SunSDR or Flex.

As I am not a contester, I didn't address these aspects of the Anan version of Power SDR. You may be right. I did see support for N1MM logging and I have heard people refer to S02R using the Anan. There is no better SDR hardware out there. The software is very fleshed-out and most of the basic components were written by the expert in that particular feature. Thus, ALL the noise mitigation is superior to the Flex. For this more cutting-edge design, you are sacrificing factory support as Flex has. This is always the cost of being 1st.

When you get it, follow the manual setup first... it is really good. Get a CAT7 or above jumper cable (short one)..so your connection is shielded. Then go to W1AEX's site for really fine-tuning the radio. Prepare to be amazed!

I think you will be very happy. Take your time and follow the hook-up instructions to get it talking to your PC. I run my I-7 laptop on WiFi and use it's ethernet connector for the Anan. Works perfectly. The radio does require some PC power to function. I'd say an I-5 or above. Once you get it "talking", then follow the rest of the setup. This radio is capable of amazing things. learn and enjoy them slowly. I have to force myself to turn on my 7610 now. It is just superfluous. The 7000 will be worth the wait!

What microphone did use use and how did you connect it.?Thanks enjoyed all your videos.

That was a simple hand-mic (Elecraft MH-3). I cannot imagine how good it will sound with a decent mic. Plugged it right into the front mic connector.

Yeah, you need a little piece of software commonly available. It didn't really add much once you get used to flying around via keyboard and mouse (and mouse wheel)

Getting ready to get back on the air, would love to have this technology in my shack but it just looks to complicated for. I just retired here, and was looking at the 7610.

Does Anan have a device that one can connect to the radio that would give you a dial for changing frequency plus other functions?

Anan doesn't , but Elad does. Check their site. I use the mouse to drag around and then use the mouse wheel to fine-tune onto the signal... The Elad device is called a Tmate2. I have it, but do not use it.

Has anyone successfully changed the DC connectors to the standard?

I'd have already ordered one of these except for my "tuning knob" concern. Can you effectively hunt for weak dx signals without a tuning knob? It seems like signals close to the noise level wouldn't even be visible on the waterfall display, so you couldn't just see them and jump there. I've been inactive for quite a few years and I'm still using my old TS-940, so my experience is limited to that. I always used to enjoy tuning the bands looking for weak signals, and I'm not sure how that would work out with just a mouse for tuning. I'm looking for input from anyone who might help out my concern. I'm very computer literate, I've been building pc's since the 70's, so that's not a factor.

Hi Old Guy.. like me! the spectrum scope on the Anan is the most sensitive I have ever used. It will show signals that are S-0. Changing over to mouse tuning takes a little time. I use a mouse with a roller wheel on top. You can get very close to the signal and then use the little wheel to fine-tune. There are several tuning methods, so really, it is 95% as good as a tuning VFO dial. I added a Tmate2 tuning dial to the Anan and stopped using it- as I got used to the mouse tuning. Past that issue, the rest of the radio is stellar.

@@Yavor54 Thanks Bob! Not having a knob for tuning is the only thing that's been holding me back. I'm fine with doing everything else through the PC interface. Guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and give it a try. It's between the IC-7610 and the Anan 7000DLE so I can't go wrong either way. Living in an Urban area, I'm liking the noise reduction options on the 7000DLE a lot. Puresignal is a nice bonus too.

So is it the rig or the S/W? If Flex had this S/W would it be as good? I know, PS wouldn't be available on the Flex but so many Hams run PS and then run 5kHz wide anyway then brag they are running PS. Defeats the whole purpose of PS. Plus the latest Flex already has a pretty clean signal. I see AL copied that stupid 3.5mm mic in connector from Flex. Good review, Bob.

It is the combination of the two. The algorithms which perform PureSignal 2 are in the software. The Flex hardware isn't very different. The purpose of adaptive pre-distortion isn't to contain the signal in 3khz. It is to linearize the RF output through negation of IMD products. This occurs at any bandwidth setting. The Flex and these radios are the most similar SDR's out there. The huge difference is the software being fully public domain. It is a novel approach and it comes with additional risk...and as well obviously an upside. This radio with it's software is ahead of the Flex.

On the other hand, Flex talks a lot & does very little to improve their software. And when they do, they provide a feature no one was asking for. Why can Simon Brown & Youssef make very frequent improvements to their SDR S/W & Flex sits on their hands? OK, I'm done.

@@bradcfi2 Brad- I have not checked the chipsets. They are both 16 bit dual RX chain radios. They are more similar than different. Tha PureSignal 2 is in the thetis operating software. Adaptive pre-distortion could be implemented in the Flex radios. The thing is- many of the individual features of the Anan were written by different people who were experts in that item. It is the feature of it being Open-Source Software. That said, you cannot get software support from Anan..only hardware.

i feel I just watched a star treck movie of the future.You have totally shaken up my world by showing me this wonderful qrm destroyer. But i have one big question i must ask you.. Doc- Well, you do it just like any other setup. Put it in line with the 7000DLE antenna connector. Since there is no ALC, the amp cannot reduce your radio's power to keep it from over-driving the amp. That is not an issue though because you can set the maximum output level of the 7000DLE in the menus...for each band etc. If you want to go to the ultimate level, you can buy a little RF sampler box that goes in line between amp and antenna. This will feed a sample of the Amp's output to the 7000DLE and it's PureSignal 2 will compensate for your amplifier's distortion as well- giving you a completely pure signal at high power. The sampler box is not expensive and you can build one. All these docs are on-line.

@@docpearson Doc- Well, how "techy" are you? Certainly you can save $500+ on providing your own PC with the black unit. I'd suggest a Lenovo W530 I-7 laptop used off Ebay. It is what I use and it is perfect. Want to earn $500-750? Buy the laptop separate.

Wow, you found a cheaper alternative. The one everyone uses is $149. You would only have to be sure it's sampler output level was proper for the Anan input. I would risk it...as I would just check it on my scope and then add attenuators if necessary. You have to use an attenuator on the $149 one too. Thanks!

Advice please! It looks great. My concern is shelling out $3k for a radio from a company that’s not been around long and has dubious technical support from the “community”. I’m pretty impressed with the NB on the flex 1500 I own that was designed 10+ years ago running power Sdr 2.8x, and wonder how the latest flex 6600 and 6400 compare in this regard with the Apache. I got into SDR with the flex 1500, which I bought for only $400, new in box, last year from a once in a lifetime Ebay find. The interface and ease of which you can use SDRs it’s just unmatched. Having said that, as much as I read very good things about the Apache, I’m also seeing the negative side from it being so small of a company. On the flipside, flex certainly has its problems and detractors but in general they seem to have more technical support and a longer track record. Meanwhile, my favorite company, Elecraft, Seems incapable of producing a full-size radio for less than $5000 these days, and I just don’t know how good the K4 is going to be. I’m comparing all these new rigs against my trusty K3 which I bought loaded 10 years ago along with the P3 and the 500 W amplifier. Anyway, if anybody out here reading this can give me some advice on flex versus Apache versus the k4 versus anything else For potential upgrade in the next year or two, I’d appreciate it.

It's simple: If you want a very proven SDR with decent support and a large user base, it is the Flex. If you want cutting-edge performance and are willing to take more risk, then the 7000 DLE II Anan is your radio. Do you want the Mustang GT or are you going for the Tesla?

@@robertnagy2163 First, forgot to say thank you and I’ve followed your videos for years. Good job on this one, I wouldn’t be thinking about an Apache if a guy like you weren’t saying how great it is. I can quibble about the analogy (technically Teslas a larger company with a bigger market capitalization and Ford at this point), but I get what you’re saying. I guess what scares me is that when I pick up the phone and call Elecraft, I talk to a human being. When I had some problems with my K3 after I bought it new from the factory, I talked to one of the engineers in a nanosecond, and had it fixed and back in the shack in 4 weeks. That’s Elecraft. I’ve heard Flex is similar - but no direct experience. The noise phasing w/2 antennas, noise blanking, and similar features you show in this video with the Apache are just so impressive and at my qth something I need (or I have S7-8 line noise) that I’m considering Apache. Im running a Flex 1500, and it has amazing NB, ditto my K3, but I still see enough benefit running the MFJ 1026 to phase out noise and peak signals that to have this incorporated in software would be amazing. Also your NB demo on the Apache was spot on - on my flex 1500 w/NB, any strong signal within 10-20 kHz pops the noise floor enough to cause distortion. That the Apache doesn’t do that is CRAZY impressive, I don’t know if the Flex 6400 or 6600, or the new K4 can compete. The K3 is way better than the Flex 1500 in this regard, but not like Apache. What have you heard about the K4, and do the new Flex radios offer that 2-antenna phase canceling? What’s NB like on the Flex rigs? Any wrinkles you could add are much appreciated.

Well, I cannot answer all those questions- but I can tell you that if you have used a Flex radio and Power SDR, you will be totally comfortable with the Anan. Yes, there is more risk without a big company behind it. It's your call. The forums and W1AEX are really great resources and I think that you'd have more fun than frustration! it is just a SDR with more customization options and better performance than the Flex. And believe me, the Tesla owners have gone through some problems being early adopters. My E-car is getting a whole battery swap-out soon...all 154,000 Chevy Bolts. It is all about your tolerance for risk (sound familiar?)

@@kd8opi If you step through the factory manual setup, you will be on the air in 45 minutes. After that go to W1AEX site and he has detailed optimization info for each section of the radio. It is called the "Anan Adventure" afterall!

Did u keep the anon........is it still best radio you've used in 40+ years

I have kept it. It still IS the best ham radio made. For my "Box with knobs" I use a IC-7610. It is a simple radio....not the RF laboratory that the Anan is.

Robert i need your help. I have called hamradio.com who are selling them and they dont know this answer. I watched your arrow cover all the buttons on the wonderful star wars 7000dle but no one can tell me if this tranciever has an internal "antenna tuner" Please help. Even the people at hamradio.com that are selling them told me they dont know. They said they would call back but no one has yet. I guess they are trying to find out also. Please Help Please Thank You

It does not. All my antennas are resonant, but I did add an LDG-100 Pro tuner to it jut for trimming out SWR at the band edges. I didn't even think to ask that question before buying it!

I'm afraid that with the possibilities of this TCVR, I would stop broadcasting completely, since I have SUNSDR2, I've been tuning rather than tuning, sometimes I get frustrated with it, so I plan to buy back some "push-button" radio in the near future. Hi Hi

Thanks for the very good review, Bob. But good grief, get rid of that silly Bobsmeter S-meter! This video is about the Anan radio and software, and you shouldn't have any unnecessary and unrelated clutter in the video...and the Bobsmeter is nothing but unnecessary clutter. That thing was always getting in the way of your presentation, such that you were constantly having to drag it around on the screen so you could get access to a particular feature of the Thetis software. Thetis has its own very capable full-featured S-meter itself (as you demo'ed) - you should have left the Bobsmeter completely out of the video. As a sufferer of OCD I must say that your inclusion of the Bobsmeter seriously detracted from an otherwise excellent video. EDIT: For the record, I own and operate a 7KDLEMKII black face (no imbedded CPU) running Thetis, I'm a very happy user. 73, Mark K1LSB

@@Yavor54 and here I was about to enter a comment asking where to get this meter. LOL. Saw your video when it came out... found a decently priced 7KDLE and recently got it setup (no thetis yet though...). (BTW, also playing with 101MP...)
