Hot take: Roy wasn’t really a villain, more an anti-villain. His motives were understandable and even sympathetic, and at the end of the film, instead of letting Deckard fall to his death, Roy saved him, showing Deckard the machine was more human than he ever was. Ultimately, Roy was a slave who longed to live and was willing to do anything to achieve that.

Great point, I never thought of it like that. It reminds me of the world war 1 Christmas truce, how people with no shared language who only hours earlier were killing each other's friends and comrades could recognize their shared humanity. I'm not at all surprised that such truces were swiftly banned. I couldn't imagine picking the gun back up after something like that. If we put aside the android question Deckard and Roy are much the same. Two men broken by a broken world they didn't choose to be born into, fighting a war that wouldn't need to be fought if not for the greed of those in power. My friend's dad is a former skinhead, swastika tat and all, who ended up marrying a black woman and raising a daughter. I've seen people who hated each other despite having never met become friends and partners. We don't even have the excuse of "the other side" technically not being human. The ability to deny our "programming" and grow as much as we do is what makes humans special. We could have a utopia if not for tribalism, a severe lack of communication and the corrupting influence of power.

An animal won't understand caring for another species if it's been raised wild. Neither would a human. (Barring rare exceptions, which are often explainable outliers. Cat cares for baby ducks shortly after giving birth to a litter, or having constantly cared for kittens, etc. Almost every rule has an exception.) If you've never known anything but enforced violent servitude, why would you possibly care about human life? You'd have no context for it. One of the details pointed out to me was how the replicants are more human than the actual human characters are. They display more emotion and refer to each other by first names. The human characters act coldly and generally refer to each other by surnames ie, Deckard, Bryant, Tyrell. This is one of the reasons I don't like the idea that Deckard himself is a replicant. His being saved by Roy teaches him a lesson in humanity.

I remember watching this as a kid. Before Roy died, he gave a speech that resonated with me. He basically taught me that mostly everything is temporary. Just paraphrasing… All the beautiful and sad moments we’ll have and experience will one day be forgotten in the pages of history. All we can do is impact those around us while we’re alive. Positive or negative, it will ripple from person to person forever. As time goes by, no one will know the source. The chain reaction we create shapes the future wether we believe it or not. Roy saving the dudes life who killed his bae, is an act of forgiveness. Forgiveness is key, without it, our heart will rotten. I honestly held grudges for years. Don’t know if it’s because I’m a Scorpio. But when I finally truly forgave everyone whoever wronged me, my daily negative vibes & anger problems left with it.

The argument made in the Star Trek TNG episode, "The Measure of a Man", perfectly relates to Bladerunner. Some paraphrased quotes: "A single Data is a curiosity; a wonder, even. But hundreds, or thousands of Datas, isn't that becoming...a race? And will we not be judged on who we treat that race? Tell me, what is Data? He is a machine, are you sure? He's met two of your criteria for sentience, what if he meets the third: consciousness in even the smallest degree? What is he then?" It's readily apparent that Replicants achieve every piece of criteria necessary to be called sentient throughout their short lives. In a way, they become human, which is a fact not robbed from just because they are made rather than born.

some interesting villains who i think would be cool to cover: 1) javert from les miserables, musical and possibly book. an officer doggedly following an escaped convict doing the write thing by the letter of the law, guided by religious and moral principles, but ultimately being led by a flawed morality that punishes the innocent. please don't include the film adaptation though, not just because it's not that great, but also because the director risked hugh jackman and anne hathaway's careers by making them sing for over ten hours a day while massively dehydrated. 2) ive said this before, but mother gothel. she's an interesting example of narcissism, gaslighting, and abuse in modern children's media. 3) syndrome from the incredibles. a single person commits mass murder of nearly an entire population of people after being rejected by a superhero as a child. frankly, he is one of the most horrifying villains in children's media when analyzed deeply. the man meticulously lured, attacked, and murdered dozens of people to develop the technology of a massive robot that he could control in order to be a hero and make money, despite being insanely rich. as in, he owns a private island rich. he even showed a disturbing lack of boundaries as a child, literally stalking mr. incredible until he eventually caused such massive damage that all superpowered people had to go into hiding as a result. the guy is such a wildly intense villain i stopped writing this in order to double check that this wasn't already done on this channel. a deep dive into this guy's psyche is well deserved.

Still would get some replicants that go rogue but probably wouldn’t have a Roy on your hands, who just wanted to have purpose and be free and live.

I remember the line he says "I've done questionable things." The way he says this sounds like he know what he did is wrong or that he didn't like what he felt he had to do, which at least shows a conscience, something we see later on in the film when he saves Deckard. Regarding the fact he is a killer we do have to keep in mind that the Blade Runners are themselves killers and Deckard acknowledges this and the fact he drinks a lot shows the job has a negative effect on him. In fact during WWII the guards at the death camps were given higher alcohol rations which hints it how hard it was to be someone whose job it is to kill. In regards to creating a being that is going to be intelligent and develop their own emotions it might not be ideal to keep them as slaves but as free labor. It is one thing to force someone to do something under threat of punishment like a slave, but if you give them their liberty and a salary to encourage their efforts it would meet the same requirements that desired. After all if they're programmed to do something they'll do it, but if such is the case why force them when you can simply pay them.

If you can, please do Zorg and Mr. Shadow from The Fifth Element. Of particular note is their... "business arrangement." I've always theorized that Mr. Shadow either lied to Zorg about his objectives or at the very least wasn't entirely forthcoming with him, because knowingly making a deal with a malignant being who intends to destroy all life in the universe is a bloody stupid thing to do. Makes no difference what promises (or threats) are made, just going by good old fashion pragmatism and logic, such an entity has no reason not to betray and murder you the instant you outlive your usefulness. I'm fairly sure that's what Mr. Shadow had in store for Zorg if the later hadn't got himself killed in an explosion near the climax of the film. Obviously, it's a bad decision regardless of whether you're good or evil, though I'd say it would be worse for you if you're evil since being such a chump is a surefire way to flush most if not all of your Villain Cred down the shitter.

One of the traits most deeply buried in the human psyche is rebellion. We hate to be controlled. Roy's last action was the ultimate proof of his humanity: "I was designed to be a soulless machine who takes life. Now, as my last willful act, I will save the life of my enemy whom I should seek to destroy." That is rebellion in its purest: To deny the nature of the existence forced upon oneself.

An interesting villain to see you cover would be The Mist in Stephen Kings novel adaptation, The Mist. Moreover for the sake that it would be a fun creative exercise than it would be particularly meaningful. However, there isn't exactly a lot of material to work with when discussing The Mist. Another interesting villain to see you cover would be Nosferatu.

This choice goes to some other characters that make me wonder whether they're evil. Even more intriguing than examining true evil: Glinda, the Good Witch of the North in The Wizard of Oz. Dolores Umbridge, in the Harry Potter movies. The teacher in Whiplash. The Drill Sergeant in Full Metal Jacket. Killmonger in Black Panther. Ozymandias in Watchmen.

His father betrayed him from birth, sold him into savagery and slavery for profit without a backward glance. Tyrell was the evil one, through and through. He got what he deserved. J.F. Sebastian helped facilitate the evil, he even referred to replicants as equivalent to his toys in a sideways kind of way. He earned his demise, too. Same for Chew and all the other "just following orders" people who did it for personal gain.

It's extremely hard to notice (I wouldn't have but for the DVD commentary) but as Deckard is falling, he spits at Roy and Roy then grabs him, saves him and says "Kinship!". So I think Roy saved him because he saw himself in Deckard, defiant to the last, and also, it showed he felt empathy in that moment
