I completely disagree: this is exactly what I think of when someone utters the phrase, "over the top," and I loathe Norman so much as a character because of it. He is beyond the stratosphere of "out there." I think Oldman has an obsession with freakish characters (notably Zorg of THE FIFTH ELEMENT). Norman is unquestionably evil, but I don't love him for it. I don't even love to hate him. He's disgusting to me. That said TVE did a superb job of spotlighting the character.

@@aydenmoesser8556 Several reasons: I love the movie of which Norman is a part; I enjoy the channel we're both on; listening to TVE is a soothing experience simply by virtue of his voice. I don't have to like a character in order to watch the channel. Indeed, the only videos I've skipped thus far are because I didn't want spoilers and the videos about the villain of The Legend of Zelda because I didn't play the game enough to be invested in the character. I am invested in Norman. I hate him, but I'm invested. Savvy?

Another story from Oldman...he told the audio engineer he was going to do it, so the guy could prepare for the volume change. Then he let fly with his, " EVERYONE! "

"You don't like Beethoven! You don't know what your missing! Overtures like that tend to get my juices flowing! So powerful! But to be honest, after his openings, he does tend to get a little f***ing boring..." I love that line!

One of Gary Oldman's greatest roles was as Beethoven in Immortal Beloved. Great film.

If you were to describe this character in a few words it would be “dirty cop”. However, the small and subtle details that are added makes him such an iconic and well written villain. Not to mention the perfect portrayal of Gary Oldman which makes him seem so genuine

Gary Oldman can avoid eye contact with the best. He does it in a sociopathic way in this film, but deferentially with Batman. Homie was great in Harry Potter, too.

Shebang! Agreed. I think he is one of the few actors who can manage to make characters with little screen time so memorable. He is also incredibly good in lead roles(Mank and Darkest Hour are good examples). To be short, he shines with whatever he is given and I believe he is a complete actor who can play everything. He is criminally underrated if you take his talent into consideration.

I love him as a villain so much. Fifth Element, Book of Eli, JFK, Air Force One, True Romance. This movie, of course. He's a legend.

Such a cool movie, where the “good guy” cop is an insane psychopath, and the “bad guy” hitman has principles & a heart of gold. A fascinating exploration of laws, lawlessness, morals and shades of grey.

"Death is whimsical today." I always wondered what Stanfield meant by that when he was told that Malky had been killed by Leon. Also, just to add as a side note, that the music choice for this movie adds so much to the story. I always get a sense of bittersweet when Matilda goes back to her school, plants Leon's plant in the grass and says "I think we'll be okay here" as Sting's Shape of my Heart plays. Every actor in this film really brought their A game.

The plant Leon has is an Aglaonema, also a Chinese evergreen. They were incredibly popular in the late 80s and early 90s. The plant is one which will die if it’s roots spread too far. So she actually kills the plant by letting it be free and planted. Some argue this was deliberate because it signifies Matilda letting the plant be free then die in peace, exactly what Leon went through. Other argue that the prop department just grabbed a common house plant and overlooked the species of plant.

The thing I love most about this character is how he is slowly reaching a pinnacle of nihilistic corruption of power and, if not for crossing paths with his foil in Leon, he might have gone on to leverage his authority in the system for quite some time. Leon forces Stansfield’s hand in an unstoppable force(berzerk, powerful Stansfield) meets immovable object (principled, skilled Leon) way that I just never get tired of.

I don't know about that. I think he'd already reached that pinnacle and was getting sloppy on his chase for the next high. Already his murder of Mathilda's family had attracted unwanted attention from other law enforcement. The guys working for him had "mercenary thug" written all over them. And calling basically the whole NYPD on Leon - he'd have had a lot of explainin' to do if he hadn't died. I got the impression that this was a man burning through his (admittedly large) reserves of impunity.

He murdered Matilda's entire family and thought that was everyone. He had no remorse, no second thoughts about it. Leon only forced him to play his cards to conceal his involvement and to continue to hide his corruption. you two have a complete misconception of his character. Again, did you just watch this video, or did you watch the ACTUAL MOVIE? because you're making no sense.

This was one of my favorite films growing up, and Oldman’s Stansfield was an unforgettable tour de force. He was id personified, acting without restraint or hesitation, gleefully ruthless and casually homicidal in a way that only the insane can manage. Really was a joy to see that character pulled apart and examined, thanks a lot!

I've seen Leon: The Professional in it's entirety twice and with my father no less three years ago.

There's no words worthy enough to describe how good Gary Oldman was in this film! An absolutely phenomenal actor

To say Oldman is chewing the scenery with this performance would be an understatement. He practically ate the entire set and had the cast and crew for dessert.

The guy really loves his tan suit. He wears it in every single scene he appears in.

Underrated???? You use that term too loosely to express your fondness of an actor. It's silly to do that. Gary Oldman is one of the most revered, respected, and recognized actors of his generation. His versatility puts him on par as a modern day Lon Chaney. There's nothing underrated about him. If you ask anybody who knows what the hell they're talking about when it comes to actors and movies.... they'll say that Gary Oldman is one of the very best.

Yeaaa....Tom is an INTJ personality....who is an intelligent pianist...who can tell lies,forge signatures,impersonate people...and can change his sexual orientation according to given situation....he wasn't bisexual...he was alone..

Gary Oldman is a true thespian and this character showcases that he can really play any role from a hero, villain or in-between.

He’s very strangely and very weirdly…likeable because of his (although sadistic and psychopathic nature) but energetic, humorous, sharp and insanely deranged but not extremely perverted either 🤷🏻‍♂️🙂

I'm pretty sure this was considered an 'underground' movie at the time. I was like 10 when I watched it with my older sister. But Gary Oldman deserved an Academy Award nom for this. He was absolutely terrifying and it still holds up to this day.

"That's why I stopped." Is the moment that chills the most for me. The unhinged glee that passes over his face, half crying, half laughing. Focused chaos. That was the moment I knew I was seeing something special.

I've never considered Stan as insane. He's a power hungry sadist

Honestly, this guy has to be one of my favorite cinema villains of all time. He manages to add something truly special to each and every single scene that features him, to the point where you might as well make a whole film focusing on him given how memorable he is as a character. Not to mention that Gary Oldman has always been and will always be the absolute maestro at disappearing in his characters, as if they were all each their own distinct individual. I also think that you might wanna take a look at his act in Dracula. A truly iconic rendition of an equally iconic character.

Norman Stansfield is probably somewhere in my top ten best cinema villains of all time. A very strange yet entertaining character to see due to the magnificent portrayal of Gary Oldman. There is one villain I would be interested in seeing a video for and that would be Gorden Gekko from Wall Street (1987).

Gary oldman can play absolutely terrifying characters. the mans skills as an actor are off the charts

Unique and interesting characters like Stansfield is the reason that Léon: The Professional is such a great film. I've mentioned before that I suspected that Norman had some sort of trauma that had a huge negative effect on his life as he must have been some what normal at some point in order to make it through the Police academy and make it up to the DEA. I suspect the side we see of him the the film is the darkest side of his persona however the facade he usually creates in public such as around the office is probably a lot more of normal person in order to fly under the radar. The clip of him walking into the police station for example we can see him casually saying hi to uniform officers that obviously have no clue of his true personality.

the acting by Oldman is so high level to the point that only recently I realized that this was Gary Oldman that played this character

Finally an explanation of the most out of control villain I've seen in a movie.

You can’t deny, Norman definitely has a passion for music. And unlike, say, Patrick Bateman, there’s not a hint of pretentiousness to it. Norman just really loves classical music and likes chatting about it with people. Of course, that one little detail about him that’s normal just makes him more unpredictable. Even when Norman is acting all chummy, you’re always aware that he’s gonna go ax-crazy again soon. And you just need to pray to whatever deities you believe in that you’re not in his line of fire.

It’s interesting that he was taking a benzo, I’d always thought it was supposed to be something hard.

Benzos aren't exactly mild, though. Especially at higher doses.

@@WobblesandBean nah benzos are pretty mild; they’re about the most tame drug you could imagine being used in such a manner in the movie. It’s been a (long) while since I watched it, but I recall thinking it was some kind of speed or something to make his experience more exhilarating, definitely wasn’t thinking of a sedative, something to help him relax.

This is one of my FAVORITE characters that Gary Oldman played. Kinda reminds you of a homicidal Jack Sparrow.

Norman stansfield is the scariest villian ever. No paint, no knife, no dr. satan, nothing to make him a stand out. He is awesome a dea agent that has “everyone” behind him.

You are a phenomenal KZreadr. I wish for you unending satisfaction from this series and any future works.

You need to do one on Tom Hardy’s character from The Revenant (2015) : John Fitzgerald.

Apparently, Oldman had many chances to get weird. Sniffing the father, for instance, was unscripted. That really freaked out the actor! Portman said she didn't have to act scared in the bathroom scene because Gary's performance terrified her. And he really looked stoned after biting those capsules. Altogether, a brilliant characterization of a screwed up dude.

This guy was soooo goddamn good. Gary Oldman nailed his role here

Do a video about the warden in the movie "The Last Castle". He is the warden in a military prison competing for power against an influential general who's locked up under his supervision.

I just saw this film for the first time yesterday and although it was quite uncomfortable at times (lol) it was a FANTASTIC and very emotional crime thriller. Caught myself tearing up more than once. Great analysis on Norman too!

Leon the Professional is one of my favorite movies of all times and was going to re watch it these days. I was expecting you to make this video because I absolutely looove Gary Oldman on this one.

He didn’t directly kill the boy, but obviously he would have. Since it was his full intention to kill the entire family. And obviously he was directly responsible for the other three. Of course Mathilda didn’t see what happened anyway, but she knows he’s responsible.
