@@thiccredgyal3404 Yes. In the home of one of the girls King wrote about, there was a big, gruesome crucified Christ hanging in the living room. King was there briefly for some reason, and the girl's mom asked him if he had been saved. The one that bugged me more was the girl whose parents were obsessed with entering contests. They occasionally appeared in Durham's weekly newspaper because they would win bizarre stuff sometimes. Meanwhile, their teenaged daughter and son wore the same clothes to school EVERY DAY. I mean worn out, fraying at the ends every day. The female students at the high school were vicious in their treatment of the girl, absolute vipers. One year, after Christmas vacation, this girl returned to school with a nice new outfit, her hair all done -- like a makeover. She had a new light in her eyes. This gaggle of Gorgons only doubled down on their cruelty. But, as she came to school in this same outfit, day after day after day, King said that light slowly dimmed, and the slavering pack of hyenas returned to their normal level of ROTTEN. This makes me sick to my soul. When I was in high school from '69 to '71, the kids had left this kind of shit behind in elementary school or junior high. I never saw anyone treated this way at my high school. BTW, both these girls (Sondra and Dodie) were dead by the time "Carrie" was written. Sondra worked at a factory and lived alone, so there was no one around to help when she had an epileptic seizure that killed her. Dodie got married and had had a kid or two when she committed suicide by shooting herself in the stomach. It makes me want to lay these parents down in a row and run over them with my car, back up and repeat, back up and repeat. Well, glad I could brighten your day!

You also get a little of Stephen King's input on Carrie and its characters in his book On Writing, too. There was a girl in his high school that inspired Carrie, whose family was so poor and she was tormented by bullies in the school. King went to help them move furniture in her house and saw the Jesus statue that is very much like the one Margaret White has in Carrie's prayer closet. King said he couldn't understand worshipping such a creepy looking relic. Of course a lot of his inspiration for the book came from his work as a janitor at a high school (cleaning the girls' bathroom and asking what the tampon boxes were), but I think we all knew people like this: a Carrie or a critical Margaret White.

Having read the book, I can't help but feel society failed Carrie White. If anyone was unfit to care for a child, it was Margaret White, and her madness was well documented throughout the book within the book. It's clear that people knew that Margaret was an unhinged extremist even by the standards of religious fanatics, and while I normally don't think children should be separated from their parents unless absolutely necessary, Carrie was without a doubt one of the exceptions. She should have been taken into protective custody. Entering foster care might even have saved her from becoming the school pariah, since much of the abuse was a result of the other students perceiving her as a freak due to her upbringing.

There is actually some controversy about Christina Crawford's characterization of her mother. Many people who knew Joan Crawford personally challenged the allegations of abuse, even her son Christopher stated his mother wasn't physically abusive. Of course, there are others who side with Christina and support her assertions. Given Joan's reputation as a difficult and aggressive woman both in Hollywood and during her time with PepsiCo I'd imagine she made a great many enemies, and she did, and those enemies would happily spill the beans on Joan's abusiveness but since that didn't happen it calls Christina's honesty in question.

I had always felt that Margaret had "visions", like Carrie has telekinesis, that she interpreted as religious messages. Probably more my headcanon than anything, but I felt that was why she seemed to know Carrie had done something so quickly. I also think it's a great example of "taking the lord's name in vain" not being about swearing, but about claiming to speak on god's behalf (I'm not Chrisitian btw, but my grandparents attempted to raise me so). A lot of people who claim to speak or act righteously on behalf of a god, but in truth really don't is a really big hypocrisy of the time period the book is from. And I don't think that Stephen King ever really pulls like what Sir Terry Pratchett does to discuss this stuff, I always got that vibe from the book (my fave book to read when I was sick as a teen was a 3 book in one of Carrie, Salem's Lot and either Cujo or The Shining).

I did once or twice challenge her but in the end, she destroyed my friend's college ambitions - she remained a house cleaner and never achieved her goal of being a social worker because her mother told her "she had no business trying to better herself". According to Steven King’s memoir, the character of Carrie White was heavily influenced by his memories of a few social outcasts from his youth. One particular girl was a very withdrawn, antisocial type and a frequent subject of bullying by her peers. One particular day this girl’s mother paid him a few bucks to haul some boxes out of the trailer in which they lived. When he walked in he found an almost life sized and very gruesome depiction of the crucifixion dominating the living room. He quickly understood that growing up under the agonized gaze of this garish deity had certainly helped form this girl into the wraith he knew. “If THAT guy ever came back, he wouldn’t be in the mood for saving souls.”

One of my favorite moments from the book that is also VERY telling of Margaret's fanaticism is when Carrie comes home and says "I came to kill you, momma. And you were waiting here to kill me. It's not right momma..." and Margaret's only response is "Let us pray. For the last time, let us pray."

I'm always amazed at how much back story there is to characters in Stephen King movies. I don't always have time to read to most of what I know from King is from movies of his books. When I listen to people analyze the movies so much more is revealed by comparing it to the books.

Margaret also had the power, but for her it was in the form of premonition. She was the one who warned Carrie that they would all laugh at her. I suspect that her ability is what drove her mad, and fueled her radical Christianity. She saw herself as a witch, or at least someone who was possessed by some demonic force.

I'm glad the character of Margaret White has been given this much attention and even understanding. She had so little guidance and didn't plan to become the person she eventually did become. I know this will sound odd but my recollection is that Piper Laurie said somewhere that when she portrayed Margaret White, she played Carrie's mother as a comic character, maybe because Margaret was so extreme. Whatever Ms. Laurie's opinion was of Margaret White, she gave a performance worthy of an Oscar nomination.

I've always said that the evil humans in King's books are much scarier than monsters like Pennywise, because they're real. I've known people like Margaret White or Jack Torrance. And I think that's why I've never found the movies to be as scary or unsettling as the books; it's hard to translate all that backstory and character development from page to screen.

Yessss I have been waiting for this ever since I left Margaret White as suggestion on one of your other vids. Great breakdown of her character in my opinion. Carrie is quite hard to break down given that there is the book, four movies (the original 1976 version, a 2002 television film which was going to lead to a series, the 2013 reboot and The Rage: Carrie 2 which was about a half sister) and stage shows each with some differences but yeah good work Vile :-)

How funny; I came across this video after spending the morning watching clips from the musical. Yes, there's a musical adaptation of "Carrie" and Margaret and Carrie's songs together are the best parts. They are: "Open Your Heart/And Eve was Weak": Carrie arrives home from school to tell Margaret about her first period and Margaret, as we all know, loses her shit. "Evening Prayers": Carrie and Margaret reconcile after the above scene. "I Remember How Those Boys Could Dance": Carrie tells Margaret she's been invited to the prom and Margaret recounts the night Carrie was conceived. "Stay Here Instead": Margaret tries to convince Carrie not to go to prom, but Carrie leaves and Margaret makes up her mind to "sacrifice her". "When There's No One": Margaret wonders what her life will be like once she's murdered Carrie. "Carrie (Reprise)": Carrie returns home after the horrible night at prom. Margaret comforts her just before she kills her.

I may have read too much into the following scene, but I found it interesting that Margaret reacted negatively to Mrs. Snell offering her money instead of listening to her sermon...but was quick to take Mrs. Snell's money anyway. Another part was the very beginning of this scene where Margaret asks about Mrs. Snell and her family.....she wanted to confirm that everyone was well, but quickly shot down Mrs. Snell's offer to invite Carrie over. If the Snell family was good enough to visit, you posed interest at their well-being AND you entered their home) then why shoot down the offer (if her goal was to spread the gospel and teach the children about salvation, then why is Carrie not allowed to participate, as kids are more inclined to listen to their peers). Again, I am probably reading way too into this, but Margaret drove me nuts. Excellent villain though, and a hell of a performance by Piper Laurie.

Because at heart, Margaret is a hypocrite: She likes to portray herself as a devout Christian, yet she is the very embodiment of the worst sin of all: Pride. In many ways she is the hypocrisy of religious zealotry and fundamentalism made flesh: claims to be a devout Christian, yet behaves in very unchristian ways, with her actions being more associated with the sin of Pride, the very sin that casted Lucifer and his loyals into Hell.
