I like how at Logan’s funeral Ewan said of him “he had a meagerness to him.” Logan was outrageously greedy and that instinct helped him build a tremendous fortune but he was so unwilling to share anything of himself w anyone. He saw others as he knew himself to be - greedy self interested and abusive. Kendall says to him “you’re so jealous of what you’ve given your own children.” Meagerness seemed like a strange way to describe Logan a first but the more I think of it meagerness is the perfect way to describe someone like Logan whos narcissistic and self preserving to a fault.

What I notice first and foremost about Logan, despite his human side, is his sense of weakness whenever he is in the Sun. Whenever he spends time in the Sun, he feels powerless and weak. Whenever Logan Roy is not in the Sun, he feels strong. To him, the Sun, seems to be a symbol of weakness. Scarily his actor manages to somehow create the appearance that he ages and becomes physically weaker when he is in the Sun. So he can bring down governments, but he cannot bring down the Sun, which he regards, either consciously or subconsciously, as a weakness. The Sun reminds him of his humanity, but the darkness makes him embrace his vampire side. Had society treated him differently he might have ended up empathic instead of as pure evil in a chair it does not belong in.

Great vid. I do think Logan showed glimpses of humanity throughout the show. He seemed genuinely humbled and sad for the waiter's parents when he met them. He also seemed to respect the boy in the first episode who didnt make the home run and didnt seem to care much for Roman and Toms treatment of him. There's other part as well - the scene when his cfo sang, and his relationship with his security guard. I dont think he was a born psycho, but not a product of environment either - he walked open-eyed in to the excesses of power and the ruin it brought to him spiritually.

Also, in the video of him having a private dinner with The Old Guards (Frank, Karl and Gerri), Connor and Kerry, his younger girlfriend with bangs, we saw another side of Logan, a man who likes arts and history. He likes limericks and poetry and even he's even singing an old song with The Old Guards. His other kids are confused because they've never seen this type of their dad in the entire life. They are too busy to get his attention and love from him but they don't know much about him personally because they are mostly narcisstic and delusional and always on their Lalaland.

I think that one of the most evil things that Logan did was have Connor’s mom/his (Logan’s) first wife, locked up in a psych ward. It’s stated that she had mental health problems, but nothing very specific. Logan might have psychologically tortured her so bad, that she went crazy, or she learned about something bad Logan did in his past, and he had her locked up so she wouldn’t tell anyone, it’s all very interesting.

And when you think about it The Roys are just modern day Lannisters (minus the incests) -Logan is Tywin but way emotional -Shiv is Cersei as the only woman on the family and they both are dumb and not so loyal to their husbands and trapped in loveless marriage except Cersei is charismatic than Shiv -Kendall is Jaime, the one who obeys the patriach the most but at the same time, feeling the pressure and both have up and down character arc except Kendall is mostly cocky and can't shut up until he gets what he wants and way more rebels than Jaime. -Connor and Roman are Tyrion, who both got abused and ignored by the patriach the most. Connor is ignored since he was a kid and he barely knows his mother as his mother is being put in nuthouse and grow up without love like Tyrion. Roman is everyone's punching bag and coping it with dirty jokes just like how Tyrion coping it by drinking and also hanging out with prostitutes. Also, Roman is clearly being abused physically the most as he's dealing it with no big deal and coincidentally, both of Roman and Tyrion have scars on their face (well Roman only has it on season finale) -Ewan is Kevan, the brother who acts differently than the patriach and not too evil but Ewan is a hypocrite as the most. -Greg is Lancel, the cousin who is still participated in the game work at the bottom (Lancel was Robert Baratheon's assistant and Greg started out as the regular employee under Tom's management) and they both have their own agenda to backstab people. Lancel slept with Cersei and then join a religious cult to trap Cersei while Greg mostly like to scheme people from day one as he mostly acting dumb most of the time but somehow he's winning.

I think what’s most interesting about Logan Roy is his comment about how life if a knife fight in the mud, because that’s his only outlook on life. I’m sure he did love his children, and had affection for the people around him, but Logan only saw the world as a fight in the mud, and despite the love and affection he might’ve held, his desire for wealth and power and his willingness to use and manipulate everyone around him for his own desires keeps him from ever emotionally investing into anyone but himself. In short, his brutal and Machiavellian worldview always came before any emotion he held, and acquiring wealth and power would always be more important then friends and family because of this

One thing I'd like to add is that Logan was most likely an absent father to his children. The title sequence heavily implies this as the old family videos have Logan in them, but we never see his face, or walking away from his family or just strolling alone. He shuts everyone out and that's probably what effects him and everyone around him the most. Another fantastic video! I'd like to see a video on Moriarty from BBC's Sherlock and the short story "The Final Problem". The intellectual rival to the greatest fictional detective, who's own ambitions bring the downfall of himself and his nemesis...

Everyone on Succession aren't exactly good people but among them, Logan is the most evil of them all. He is ruthless, manipulative and he's also making enemies to everyone. His children aren't exactly evil, they're broken due to bad parenting. Lukas Mattson is not too evil, he's just being pretentious business man whom the siblings against with. He didn't give them so much threats, he mostly teasing them and they're feeling insecure with his presence. Tom is also not evil but marrying someone like Shiv makes him lost patience as Shiv doesn't respect him. Cousin Greg is mostly being sneaky but he's not too evil. Throughout Season 4, we all thought it's gonna be the war between The Siblings vs Logan or Mattson however, they are actually fighting among themselves. The last board meeting scene showing their true colors, they can't trust each other anymore as they want the CEO position so badly. They are bringing self destruction among themselves and can't comprehend together. Logan won since Season 3 for selling his company to Mattson and his kids are becoming miserable without him. Society won't take them seriously because even they carried Roy on their name, they're not as intimidated as Logan.

I’m of the unpopular belief that Logan did love his children. I think because of the way he was brought up, he never actually knew how to love someone. Obviously a person makes their own decisions and becomes their own person when they’ve grown up, but from the moment he was shipped off to Canada, the only thing Logan was ever taught how to do was survive. Surviving poverty, surviving his abusive uncle, and surviving the cutthroat business competition in the media industry.

As horrifying as it is to imagine Logan constantly lording over his kids when they were children like he does in present day, I think the equally horrifying reality is that it was like 90% neglect, and when he did occasionally feel the need to shape them into his image, he did all the horrible things we hear about. But the neglect is the true lasting poison that keeps Ken, Shiv, and Roman on the hook, forever seeking the glow of that attention. The other abuses that he inflicted are a kind of attention though, and so his kids struggle to process those abuses as strictly harmful and undesirable. I dont think that Connor, who was obviously also very neglected, is evidence against this view. He was distinguished from his siblings in several ways, and simply wasn't or is no longer chained to the promise of attention from his father to the degree that his siblings are.

  • @arturzinurov4781

Ironically I think Logan’s neglect towards Connor might be the best parenting strategy for someone like Logan. Just keep them far away from your poison and provide with anything they ever need. Yes Connor has trauma because of that but he is also the only child who was able to move on from the need for validation from Logan and their relationship is the most honest between in the show. Connor asks him for money Logan gives him the money.

The best weapon in anyone's arsenal is the mind as well as how they present themselves and Logan Roy went from a child who had very little and rose into basically a kingmaker. However his trauma he faced as a kid grew into his way of bringing up his brood and it had a negative effect on some of them. Logan Roy is basically the Tywin Lannister of Succession.

I still cried while watching the episode where Logan dies though mostly because of the way the kids were reacting to finding out, it showed that no matter what they still loved him.

Brian Cox was great as Stryker in X-MEN 2, but in the comic, Stryker was an evangelist. Had they not turned him into a black ops general, I think Cox would have really dug into his proper portrayal.

Would love a take on the siblings next, but anyways, this was a great analysis. In the show, we often focus on the corporate side and forget that Waystar Royco shaped society from the ground level as well. This is why soft power can be most terrifying as it dealt with people's ideology and how they react with the world.

Brilliant analysis! Logan was the true golden apple of discord, tragedy shadowing most who sought it. Euripides said "Everything is random and only your own actions are responsible for the outcome of your life". There is no better reflection of that than watching the progression of how each of his children mourned his loss. I don't think it hurts to throw it out there again, so please consider Dre from "Swarm", Kevin from "We need to Talk about Kevin". Additionally, Jackie from "What Keeps You Alive, and Ragnar Lothbrok in Vikings.

Great analysis on Logan Roy. That man was such a miserable, vindictive, and malicious piece of shit. The show itself was a masterful tragedy, but it was also incredibly cynical and nihilistic. I honestly can't think about it too much and not come out disturbed, seeing how realistically it portrays what the top of today's Mt. Olympus is comprised of: the highest heights of wealth and opulence springing forth from the mangled and violated corpse of human compassion, understanding, and goodness.

The siblings are broken but they coping it on their own ways: -Connor is trying to do something to proof himself worthy including having a ranch and trying to be the next President without politic background. Even though he has a girlfriend who has a platonic relationship, he at least has someone to take care of him. -Kendall coping it by being rebellious and likes to party hard and doing drugs. He's also rude, obnixious, never let anyone talking, being narccisstic and also whenever something doesn't going on his way, he will act childish and temperamental. He can't even take care of his own family as he abandon them because he can't even take care of himself -Roman is coping it by making sex jokes and talk dirty and even likes to jerk off. He mostly hit on Gerri just because she is the closest thing that he has for having a mother as his own mother ignored him. He also fails for having in serious relationship twice as he disconnect to reality on how to act like a gentleman. He mostly confront people to get hit because we can see that Logan used to abuse him a lot and he acts like it's no a big deal. -Shiv in the other hand is tired being isolated as she's the only girl on the family. She mostly talks too much, gaslighting and always don't agree with everyone else. She's also rude, ignorant and acts like a total Girl Boss. She most of the time always playing Tom, her husband like a fiddle as she herself doesn't even know how to treat a man right as her father and her brothers don't take her seriously. She's lacking of attention so she has try everything to get attention from people.
