You are actually right about toons being susceptible to mental damage. Remember when R.K Maroon planned to blackmail Acme with pictures of him and Jessica? Roger was pure heart break. Maroon said it best himself “You can drop anything you want on a toon and he’ll just shake it off. But break his heart he goes to pieces just like you and me.” That alone says toons can have mental and emotional breaking points.

So emotional damage are a Toon's kryptonite gotcha. Makes sense considering that a toon has a default personality unlike a human. Humans are a multilayer of personalities but toons they just follow one default personality from the moment they are drawn into existence.

@@justaguyonyoutube4592 You know, I always thought the whole "laugh to death" thing was some consequence for evil toons only....It's noted in the DVD commentary that the weasels only laugh at the expense of others... And in the film we never hear Judge Doom himself ever laugh (not even after the reveal) and yet Eddie said in his recap of his brother's murder that the murderer stood over them laughing. Truly, while Judge Doom is morose and cold hamming the majority of the time, the brief moments where he *does* look genuinely happy (as if he wants to laugh) is when he just harmed someone or something (the shoe or Benny the Cab) or he's about to (when he thinks he's about to kill Roger or Eddie). Maybe the reason why we never hear him laugh is because he knows that it's dangerous for him, and it's dangerous for the weasels for the same reason. Or, maybe it's just not that deep and it's a plot hole, always was my theory though.

Christopher Lloyd, as Judge Doom, terrified me as a kid. He actually scared me, and that's my idea of a true villain bro did his job right, scaring me as a kid.😂

The worst part being this, everyone who thinks “religion” these days only thinks about Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, and thus associates their worst aspects with everyone else.

​@@qtar1984another tell that I've only just realised is how terrified he was of Roger pointing a gun at him. It was a toon gun! And toon items and weapons can hurt him! They can either hurt or hinder all toons in toontown! Tying Roger and Jessica up, he told the weasels to use toon rope so they couldn't escape. If it was real rope, they'd have just slipped out.

I noticed a mistake on your explanation of von Rotten's backstory. When the Valiant brothers cornered him, it was a piano that he dropped on them, not a safe. It broke Eddie's arm, and killed Teddy.

@@GregJamesMusic Precisely. Doom wanted to make sure his trail couldn't be tracked. He had the perfect opportunity to pin the blame on Roger when he went after Maroon to buy out his studio, although I believe Doom told Maroon too much about his freeway plan. So Maroon worked his own devices to blackmail Roger's wife into posing for the patty cake photos. Which would have gotten Maroon closer to getting Acme's will into his own hands. That worked into Doom's plan to kill Acme, and pin the murder on Roger.

​@@exxor9108 Doom/Cloverleaf basically lied to Maroon, and claimed that he needed to ask for the pattycake photos to "blackmail Acme" coercing him to sell Toontown to Cloverleaf. He never wanted Acme dead nor wanted his will. However, when Acme was murdered at the same time that the photos were exposed to the public, Maroon already knew that "Cloverleaf" did it to obtain Acme's will, and that they were coming for him next for knowing too much/snitching (hence his final scene, isolated, suspect of everything armed with a gun) I just wonder if Maroon knew the entire time that "Cloverleaf" was Doom, and why he was cool with Cloverleaf obtaining Toontown through blackmail/coercion and didn't suspect that Cloverleaf's endgame was toon genocide at that time...

@@msannethropp7497 Maroon definitely knew too much at the time. When Eddie was interrogating him, Maroon warned him that if he told him he was a dead man. Sure enough, Doom killed Maroon just before he spilled the beans on his scheme.

I think he’s a reference to silent film stars who lost work in the 30s and 40s as sound films made them unemployable if they had high squeaky voices. It may explain why he resented the currently working toons.

Baron Von Rotten of the Dark Horse comic was definitely referencing an old timey silent film star ("Toon of a Thousand Faces" = Lon Chaney who was called "Man of a Thousand Faces") However, in reality Chaney would die in 1930 at the age of 47 so we'll never know if he is would have had crossover appeal if circumstances were different.

I remember Family Guy made a reference to Buster Keaton in one episode where the front of the house almost crushed him! They had Buster talk in a low gravelly voice! In real life, Keaton really did have a low gravelly voice!

It was crazy af to watch Bugs Bunny and Mickey appearing together on screen. There's no way that would happen again now

It’s hinted at a couple times in the film. When we’re first introduced to Doom, Lt. Santino tells Valiant how he became a judge by essentially buying the election. Later, Eddie tells Roger the story of how his brother died. They were trying to stop a bank heist of a zillion simoleons, only for the robber to kill Teddy with a falling piano and disappear afterwards. It shouldn’t be hard to put two and two together from there

My dad used to do a fantastically good Judge Doom impression. Believe it or not, I and most of my friends thought it was more funny than terrifying. Then again, my dad also looked like Samuel L. Jackson, so the idea of Sam with a high, squeaky voice just hit kinda funny…

He thinks the entire concept of that is hilarious. Oddly enough, in the big reveal/climax it's obvious that Doom is relishing traumatizing Eddie. So kinda meta in a way.

According to Zemeckis, Lloyd read the script of Judge Doom's introduction scene and already correctly guessed "He's a toon!" Probably why he nailed the rigid puppety mannerisms that foreshadow the twist, and why he spoke as if he was in a stage play instead of a film ; a toon (a melodramatic one that hates comedy) would do something like that, while disguised as a man.

And what's creepy is how we never learn his true motives or appearance underneath that disguise. The fact that toons are diverse shows that Judge Doom could be anyone or anything. Sometimes not giving your villains a backstory or giving them a clear appearance makes them more terrifying

You know the creepiest thing about The Vile Eye? Is that when he says something has change about his audio because he didn’t change his voice or he’s sick and he sounds literally exactly the same. He’s the type of guy that would have a whole rant and excuse himself for the emotional outburst and his tone nor voice barely changed. It’s terrifying.

That entire bar sequence is great because everyone is reacting with such anxiety and visceral disgust as if Doom is violating the bar by simply being there (much like 6 year old me, I just wanted him off the screen ASAP) and they're also reacting that way because they sense that there is something "off" about him. They certainly don't know what it is (and the 1st time viewing audience still doesn't at this point) but it's enough to be unnerving and uncomfortable.

Here are some suggestions for your next Analyzing Evil of Animated Villains: - Ursula from The Little Mermaid (1989) - Napoleon from Animal Farm (1954) - Hal Stewart/Tighten from Megamind - Lotso from Toy Story 3 - All the villains from Pinocchio (1940)

In Pinocchio technically Stromboli is the only actual villain. The fox and the cat are con artists/ henchmen. The coachman is a Krampus/boogeyman punisher figure. And monstro the whale is an animal.

​​ Monstro wasn't just a whale, all the animals of the sea fear him. Monstro must of done some undersea warcrimes to be fear by all undersea creatures. Momstro was the monster of the sea.

The combined backstory of Judge Doom from buying an election to trying to buy out ToonTown to destroy it makes his defeat at the end and ToonTown going to the toons all the more sweeter!

Apart from Doom, I also love his henchmen the weasels. They were pretty hilarious and creative secondary antagonists. Each of them had their own personality!

Honestly, Christopher Lloyd deserved an Oscar for Doom. The man kept his head shaved save for the bleached hair tuft for the entire shoot, spent the movie having to wear heavy makeup, interacting with beings who aren't there, all the while making the character truly sinister while also pointing out what's going on the whole time. Another KZreadr named Danger Dan Jerz was the person who pointed it out, but his cover was almost blown immediately due to the hand buzzer and a toon's urge to go fully electric in his intro, which kinda ties into your point about him not wanting to be the butt of the joke any more.

Yes! I saw the video you're talking about. And I never thought about it before but he was right, there is a clear contrast into how a *human* is shown reacting to a handbuzzer (visible irritation) and how *Doom* did (an initial "Oh no! Stay cool!" Look on his face, then a muted annoyance throughout) I also agree Lloyd deserved more recognition for that role. Especially since no matter how many times I watch the film, he is so believable as this serial killer, and you never forget that Judge Doom is one.

That scene where Judge Doom removes his eyeballs to reveal this animated lunatic , traumatized me as a child lol. I used to think Rodger Rabbit was the “grown people one” when i was trying to distinguish him from Bugs Bunny 😂 (Edit: 11/24/23… One day i was trying to describe Rodger Rabbit movie to my dad because i wanted to watch it on vhs but couldn’t remember the name of it at the time. I could only describe it in short scenes and then i called it the “grown people’s rabbit”…. And that was all my dad heard smh. He assumed i was talking about playboy . Judge Doom is uncontrolled greed given form and that is why he is iconic.

I heard somewhere that Judge Doom was loosely based on the Nazi judge, Roland Freisler, who was known as Hitler's Hangman. He was a rather nasty character who berated his victims in the courtrooms with his shrill voice. He also was at the Wansee Conference that set up the Final Solution. Fortunately his head to split open during an American bombing raid. If you think of Doom along the lines of a self-hating toon, a group that is clearly treated as second class (even Roger says they get no justice in the movie), it makes his character all the more loathsome and even more complicated in the sense he wants to eliminate his own kind so he can live among humans as a human.

As an immortal & impervious one, to boot. I believe he wanted all the other toons gone so there would be no risk of the disguise being undone by some shave & a haircut like complulsion or trapped in a trope only known among toons. He planned to go on and rule the humans, too as an immortal, unkillable liege. You'll note the officers said only he knew the actual mixture for dip. With no other toons to counter him, he'd go on to rule the world. I can imagine no more deadly an assassin in such a scenario. Emperor Doom by day. Killer cartoon by night of his larger geopolitical opponents, rivals, and detractors.

I love chris lloyds range of acting! Characters that are endearing loving and memorable like doc brown...as well as believably villainous characters like judge doom. A true living legend

Never thought Judge Doom had more to him than just a big, tall, dark bad guy of the film. I’ve certainly learned something today, and have a newfound appreciation for Judge Doom as a villain in film.

Judge Doom has to be one my most favorite villians in all of fictional media, just his own chilling hatred against his own kind has me entirely engrossed into his character and just how he moves adds more to the creepiness on what he truly is, an enigmatic cartoonish monster but of course his physiology as a toon makes him a lot more horrifying, definitely one of the best

OMG I remember being so terrified of Judge Doom in the final scene as a kid but I loved the movie so much I'd rent it once every couple weeks during summer, along with Terminator 2 over and over and over.

A good analysis would be on Room 1408 or Sid from Toy Story

Judge Doom scared me as a kid, when he showed how dangerous he could really be after the reveal. And thanks for talking about the freeway plot. Robert Moses comes to mind when it comes to freeways through neighborhoods or a Toon Town..

Honestly it makes a lot of sense that cartoon folks back then would treat people who take the villain roles very poorly due to their appearance and their reputation .🐱

I respect the fact that you opted to explore the Baron Von Rotten identity for the purposes of the video, but I also think that the Pistol Packin' Possum identity contains some interesting implications: There are a total of four film posters that line the walls of Maroon's Office. One of them is an advertisement for the "Pistol Packin' Possum", the other three pertain to the three pervious Baby Herman/Roger Rabbit shorts that preceded "Somthin's Cookin'". It's also worth noting that when Valiant is interrogating Maroon, he states: "The truth is I had a chance to sell my studio. But Cloverleaf wouldn't buy my property unless Acme sold them his. The stubborn basterd wouldn't sell, so I was going to black male Acme with pictures of him and the Rabbit's wife." What this all potentially means is that the Possum was a former lead actor under contract with Maroon Cartoon Studios whose career hit a dead end after his under-performing cartoon short "The Pistol Packin' Possum" was overshadowed by the pop culture success of the Roger Rabbit's first short. When Maroon approaches Cloverleaf to sell his studio, the Possum (through Cloverleaf) agrees to under the condition that Acme sell as well -- which would mean that the Possum reverse engineered a circumstance under which he could kill Acme and frame the actor who he potentially blamed for the end of his career. It's also worth noting the possibility that the pistol seen in the poster for "The Pistol Packin' Possum" is the same gun that Doom used to assassinate Maroon.

Why didn't he? Maybe because "Cloverleaf" for some odd reason knows all of Maroon's dirty laundry and tea and threatened to expose it all to the public, if he sings like a canary. "Cloverleaf" (the Possum toon) worked with Maroon for a long time, very intimately, in the past. Since Maroon was armed with a GUN to defend himself, he would never learn why "Cloverleaf" seemed to know so much...

I loved Eddie valiant's interaction with Betty boop she was the only person imo that Eddie talked to with respect.

This is the same guy that played the lovable, goofy Jim from Taxi. Dude had some real range.

The "boomerang bigot" is my favorite kind of villain, because they're inherently so traitorous and vile, but also tragic and invite so many questions. Finding out that this man who wants to oppress Toons is HIMSELF a toon gives him a lot of depth and makes me wabt to know more about him.

Rewatching the film, knowing what the plot twist is, you can kinda see how Doom projects his own existential insecurities onto other toons. Like when he's about to dip the shoe, his mannerisms towards Eddie and Santino say "Look at it, it has no purpose...Pitiful" One could argue that at least the shoe's cuteness would have made some people smile, and according to Roger, that IS a toon's purpose. What does that say about a toon like Doom, who can't make anyone smile, and instead wants to make others miserable?

Doom the typa guy who goes to the most beautiful scenic place in the world and say “yeah… we need a highway here and a few gas stations there.”

Judge Doom scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. I'm not sure if I saw it in theaters, I would have been 7, maybe 8 if as a VHS rental. I think it was the fact that he was an evil cartoon in the real world made it feel like he could really get me. The idea that he couldn't be killed with normal weapons was a terrifying idea up there with Dracula. He's still kind of freaky to me.

This man and Michael Myers were the stars of my nightmares when I was a child 😢 Thank you for your amazing content. I hope you feel better! 🎉

I saw in your recent stream that sometimes you want to cover villains that don’t have extensive appearances across many different forms of media. I would recommend covering The Beast from Over the Garden Wall. He appears in the 10-episode miniseries as well as a short comic tie-in.

Excellent choice!! Growing up as a kid I loved Who Framed Roger Rabbit and found much more appeal to Judge Doom as I became older.

There is ONE thing though which leaves a curious question to his actual form. After he dies of dip, there is only red and yellow color. The red is easily explained from the eyes but the yellow doesn't show up anywhere else. He also shapeshifts only in gold color making it probable that his original form was golden somehow.

Judge doom was one of the scariest parts of my childhood. You should check out Sarah from a recent movie, “Cobweb.” A lot of people who’ve seen the movie all say she was just evil but I’m not fully invested in the idea she was pure evil. I’m sure you could give a wonderful analysis on her.

The fact that Judge Doom was a toon this entire time was is something that still amazes me to this day.

A great breakdown of a villain from a film I've enjoyed since I was a kid. I miss the movies that combine cartoons with live-action. I like how you aim to be fair and unbiased in your analysis while still not being shy to make a judgment. Suggestion: A new movie out now called Saltburn. While it's a tad on the shocking side, it has an understated character who commits depraved acts of evil if you're interested in catching it while it's still in theaters and analyzing it afterward.

I was so easily scared as a child and even into my teens. Yet Doom never scared me. I think it was because I was so enamored with all the cartoons characters on screen. Still love the movie now in my forties and is still a great villain!

Random side note: The weasels are loosely based on the weasels that tear up Toad Hall in The Wind in the Willows.

I had no idea that they had a WFRR comic series and that it went on for so long!

I really hope you consider doing one of Darkseid from Superman the Animated Series, Justice League the Animated Series, and Justice League Unlimited!!

Since you did this analysis on a childhood classic perhaps you could do one on another classic villain, cruella de vil.

Had this on VHS. I don't know how true this is but I heard that the creator of the original book loved this movie so much that he made the book a bad dream in-universe.

I always assumed, based on what little we see of Doom's cartoon form, that he was a cartoon robot.

In my top ten movies. I love the way the movie basically slaps you in the face with the fact that Doom is a toon but they still keep it so subtle.

Aw yes! I was hoping you'd do him one day! I still remember when I was a little kid and saw the movie, I mean it had Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse, but no joke I (and I imagine many other kids) was absolutely terrified when he reveals his true nature to the point I couldn't even look at the movie screen till he was gone. Excellent villain so glad you covered him! Another thing about Doom though: Remember toons live for laughter, they live by "rule of funny" and can bend any rule of reality for a joke. We see hints that part of him never went away when you see the ways he murdered Eddie's brother and Acme and attempted to murder Eddie in ways that would be utter slapstick in a cartoon, and so what would that mean? What would another reason be he did all this? Because to him, in his warped mind, it's *HILARIOUS!*

I don't know if I was Scared of Doom as a child but I grew to love him the older I get. I credit the character as one of many reason why I love a good bad guy.

I Think I actually like your theory about Judge Doom being The Pistol Packin’ Possum more than the official lore of him being Baron von Rotten. It gives me King Candy from Wreck-It Ralph vibes. I still like the von Rotten story though.

This might be one of Lloyd's best and simultaneously more over looked performances. On the surface it looks over done and obvious. In any other movie it wouldn't have worked. But figuring out that Doom is the bad guy was never the point. It was never meant to be subtle. So this hammed up mad man persona works really very well. Then, when the veil is lifted at the climax. The most important part was to show just how demented and dangerous he really is. Quite a feat considering how menacing he seems for the run of the film. I struggle to think of many actors at the time who'd have pulled it off without seeming too goofy. Michel Keton maybe? Beetlejuice came out the same year and really displayed his range. I think he could have pulled it off. But the character wouldn't have come out the same. Lloyd was a perfect pick.

Judge Doom’s eyes are nightmare fuel. Terrified me as a kid. The only villain(or character) I want to see analyzed is The Grinch. Jim’s and Benedict’s in their own separate videos since both are different. The animated version could be ignored since there isn’t really anything to characterize him. Dr. Seuss isn't known for deep characters, only for his art style, made-up words, and rhythms after every sentence.

As a kid, I kinda thought Doom was half-human. Also, I think the dynamic between toons and humans is supposed to be a metaphor for race relations.

Would love to see analyze the evil of Lifetime movie villain Don Cody, from Girl in the Basement, played by Judd Nelson. Now that is one evil man.

The scene where he kills the cartoon shoe is one of the most haunting scenes from my childhood. And the big reveal of his true form was creepy af.

I was 3 years old. This was my first movie at the theater. Eddie Murphy turned down the part of the Private detective, he said it was his biggest regret.

the movie is an allegory for racism against African Americans and judge doom in this allegory is supposed to be a stand in for uncle toms which are black people who hate other black people and black culture and regularly sell out their race though internalized bigots are people that can be apart of other groups however judge doom is shown saying and doing similar thing's to these uncle toms which is certainly a word that's been overused by idiots on the internet that's it's lost all meaning but anyways doom is a toon hates other toons to a certain extreme that no human in the film was even on the level of and believes humans are better then toons and seeks to destroy them to build a freeway for the wealthy humans primarily he despises thing's like comedy and laughter the very thing's toon culture is themed around which he seeks to destroy along with the toons themselves then in the sequel novel he attempts to destroy toons throught corprate exploitation

@@jessicapinkman-hd4bw Those involved in the writing and production of the film were inspired by the film's source "Who Censored Roger Rabbit." While yes the stories and background characters *are* different, the toons being allegory for African Americans is even more obvious in the novel and it's subtely alluded to in the film. So yes, Judge Doom was meant to be an allegory for internalized racial hatred. EDIT : Sorry I was agreeing with you and it sounded like I was arguing lol

Christopher Lloyd he also played a very convincing Klingon.

You know when Doom puts on that glove at the beginning of the movie, the sound that thing makes, and then slowly lowers the toon into the dip. That was heartbreaking to watch as a kid, but I remembered Christopher Loyd as Uncle Fester and Doc so he never quite got to me like someone who didn't previously know him. He's acting royalty to my generation. May he live forever.

This was interesting. Judge Doom was an awesome villain, and Christopher Lloyd played this guy so well. I also found a villain you should analyze in a future episode. That is Will Teasle from Rambo: First Blood. That one deserves an episode.

Great analysis of Judge Doom, Vile Eye! I would like to add to it that it might also be based on the machinations of Robert Moses, so there's a racial component as well. As for a recommended villain, I would like to see Moebius the Time Streamer from Legacy of Kain.

The interesting thing about the villains plot for this fictional story, is that it actually came true in real life. Just take a trip to Los Angeles to see my point.

This is one of my favorite movies as a kid. Judge Doom creeped me out, even before his reveal at the end, killing that poor shoe was how it started.

When I tell you think guy gave me nightmares as a child after this movie is and understatement! Keep pushing the good content!

This is genuinely one of my favorite games ever, and Toontown is one of my favorite games. The two go hand in hand in their message, the game is about Toons fighting against the corporate cogs, robots hell-bent on taking over Toontown.

Just watched this for the first time in a while the other day, and it still holds up! I love how judge dooms ultimate goal is to just build a stroad over toon town lol

Vile, I've got three requests for you: * Catherine and the People Behind the Nightmares (Catherine; Valentine's Day episode) * Persona 5 (Characters and Themes) * Courage the Cowardly Dog (Characters and Themes; We both enjoy this cartoon series and you're willing to do such a video)

What makes his existence all-the-more terrifying is that, due to the toons "rule of funny", they never did any jokes or gags that caused actual damage to humans, since they don't find actually causing injuries and deaths as funny. The fact that Judge doom can actually use toon physics to murder Eddies brother, harm Eddie with an anvil hand, try to cut him to pieces with a saw arm, and commit genocide in order to basically get rich off of a freeway means that everything he did was HILARIOUS to him.

There are a lot of parallels between this movie, Chinatown, and The Two Jakes. Robber barons conspire to monopolize a resource and, years after the movie's conclusion, their plans shape Los Angeles into its present state.

He's not bad, he's just drawn that way.

Loved the video! This movie is one of my favorite childhood viewing experiences. Can’t wait to see the upcoming video on Sauron from The Lord of the Rings.
