Such an underrepresented and scarce discussed area of philosophy. I'm so happy to see how thorough this channel is...it feels good to see how much you value informing people about a subject you have a great deal of passion and knowledge about in a clear and purely informative and objective form. One of the best philosophy channels on KZread by far!

The barrier between north and sub-saharan Africa is somewhat a post colonial structure, or more neo colonial. Africa have never been separated by sahara. Ones there where actually civilisations in the sahara even when it was a desert like the garamanties (i think that is how it is spelled) the almovahid empire was trans sahara empire, that started in senegal and ended in spain. West African intertectuel hubs like timbuktu and kano were also connected to North Africas hubs like fez, and the Middle Eastern, or let's say the arabic world, the berbers, and other native North African are closer to sub sahara Africa then the Arabic north African, for eksempel in west Africa you find pre Islamic gods that resemble ancient ancient Egyptian gods, and the ancient Mandé writing system and berbers writing are almost the same. do to the désert growth ethnicities like the Mandé were forced to south but that didn't create a separation between them and the berbers, there was still trade and raids and so on and eventually the berbers would take over the Ghana empire. Up til 1900 century there where strong trading, religious and cultural links between the North and the South in some places like the kanem bonuro (i think that is how it is spelled).

Will you be considering the influences of outside religions on those philosophies? Such as Judeo-Christian-Islam or Hindu as might be the case in South Africa.

I wad born in Yoruba territory and have been to a dozen countries across africa. Very interested to Learn the distinction between philosophical histories and current cultural trends in these places. As sub-Saharan Africa did not have written language before the colonials came over, I wonder how their history will be presented. Btw, I visited Rwanda's national museum 2 years ago. Their history prior to the 1700s takes up 1/2 a wall. I asked the curator why they had so little. He said "we didn't have a written language till the colonists came. We have some oral traditions, but they don't always match the archeology. " Bizarre, if you think about it. That concept simply doesn't exist outside of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Interesting video. I won't be insulted that you didn't include Carneades. I think "Thinkers" is a tough category because it is so broad. It seems to me that most everyone on the list is a great candidate, but I think there are some that I might have included such as Hypatia of Alexandria, Walda Heywat or Zera Yacob.

I would count him and David Benetar as African philosophers, but there is likely a debate to be had around whether we should count someone in a philosophical tradition if they share a nationality with the tradition or if they share an ethnicity with it. We will look into this somewhat when we cover ethnophilosophy.

I would love for there to be more African philosophers on KZread. As someone who has lived for many years in Africa, I think that these philosophies are important to share and learn about regardless of who is doing the teaching, but I understand that there are many that disagree. And be careful assuming my race based on my voice, the channel is named for a (North) African philosopher after all.
