The first thing the Philippines should do is to ask all Filipinos living in China to leave China soon. This is to prepare for an eventual downgrading of diplomatic relations. Any Filipino who chooses to stay in China should do so at their own risk. The Philippines should refuse giving consular services to such Filipinos should they choose to remain in China.

@@origenjerome8031 Easier said than done. Look at the bigger picture. If China issues trade bans, imagine the effect on our economy. When China stops accepting exports from us, and China stops sending exports to us. At the end of the day, anyhow, we are the losers as we are inferior. What BBM only done has to become a proxy in US China beef, unnecessarily escalate tension, unlike FPRRD who managed to be neutral on both, heck our fishermen can still fish back then

@@semperfidelis3235 FPRRD was not neutral, he was Pro-China and Anti-America. That was the reason why Filipino fishermen were able to freely fish in those waters. Let's not spread misinformation. And this claim that the Philippines is being used as a proxy by the US against China, is absurd. The Philippines is DELIBERATELY involving the US in its conflict with China. No need for being a proxy. The Philippines and the US are like-minded in terms of both the Taiwan issue and the West Philippine Sea issue. People are just saying the Philippines is being used as a proxy just to insult the Philippines, branding the Philippines as nothing but a slave. This is just enemy propaganda meant as an insult against Filipinos. With regards to China's economic retaliatory measures, that is of course a given already. That is why the Philippines should take prudent steps to decouple from China continuously. It doesn't happen overnight, but the recent moves by the government to strengthen greater ties with Japan is a good step forward. The Philippines should stop all Chinese investments in the Philippines.

I think Chinoy's analysis is quite myopic as it disregards the chronology and time-bound factors. Ten to twenty years ago, the US was focused on the Middle East and the fight against Bin Laden and Islamic extremists, while China was making its moves in the South China Sea. At that time, China had positive relationships with the US and the West, as it was considered the factory of the West. The Philippines had no solid legal basis or standing to counter China's claims. Back then, China's policy of "might makes right" appeared to be an appropriate calculation. However, Filipinos, being adept in asynchronous warfare and out-of-the-box solutions, came up with the idea of grounding the Sierra Madre as a low-cost, eco-friendly, and sustainable solution to protect our territorial claims. In comparison, China had to construct expensive and ecologically destructive militarized artificial islands. Today, the Philippines has the legal standing of the 2016 international court decision, which upheld our territorial claims and debunked China's claims. Additionally, President BBM brilliantly added the Treaty of Paris and the Washington addendum as legal grounds. These documents provide 20th-century historical evidence, from the time when international borders were set, clearly delineating the area of the West Philippine Sea claimed by the Philippines. This is because Spanish garrisons on certain islands, which were surrendered to the US in the Washington addendum, delineate the territory ceded by Spain to the US regarding the turnover of the Philippines. China's economy is currently affected, with many Western companies reducing their presence in the country. President Biden has made the Pacific region a primary focus for US security calculations, deeming the South China Sea area more important compared to the Middle East. In my opinion, China is slow to adapt to the changing environment and is still making calculations based on 20-year-old assumptions. In comparison, the Philippines have made gradual but progressive moves that have solidified their standing in our territorial claims. It is noteworthy that President Noynoy Aquino's decision to file the Philippine case against China in 2013, despite ridicule from figures like Enrile and Mendoza and some other academic and legal luminaries, resulted in a 2016 victory that now provides a solid legal foundation for President BBM's strategy of military and economic alliances to strengthen our territorial claims in the West Philippine Sea. Our two presidents, both sons of former presidents, have turned out to be a tag team in making the Philippines a key player in today's global geopolitics.

This Mutual Defense Treaty of US has never been invoked in an all out war and has many loop holes, weights more on diplomacy than war, weights more assistance than military conflict, obscured set of obligations and has means to terminate it easily and subject to the mood of the sitting US President. It is obvious that America is ditching Philippines yet they are still clinging to it. US is clinging more to China as it has more gain economically. Want to rival China, then use your unimaginable diplomatic influence, economic influence and interest influence to a nation that is beneficial to you. So, Philippines is now an independent country with a fast developing economy, a strong democracy, and good government. Our politicians campaign directly to the people during elections. No threats, no gangs, no armies. So, we have developed a strong rules based democratic government today, which is very important to be accepted in the circle of first world economies. Our president BBM is doing things brilliantly, and the best thing is our leaders know they have the support of the Filipino people. Unlike China where people are ruled by fear, coercion, and might. This is one of the reasons why Filipinos cannot make a bold advancement on the issue. They are confined with the idea that the disputed islands are their official Territory. They didn't even scrutinize the big picture that the territories are disputed. UNCLOS awarded the RIGHTS to the territories not RULE. As only a RIGHTS China is using this as a leverage to also contest the territory. Why UNCLOS cannot prosecute China in ICJ in failing to comply UNCLOS ruling? Beside that China is not a party to the Statue of ICJ, China uses its Super Power state to refuse to accept the UNCLOS. Why UNCLOS cannot do anything? Because China is now very dominant and has huge Diplomatic network that even a UNCLOS decision cannot even contain them, much more that they can veto any UNSC ruling. Its pity for the weaker states but its a reality that Super Powers gets all the advantages. China is only following the steps of US where America also bypass some International ruling. Then what can the Philippine do? As a small state what you can do is to either to bring forth your National pride and subject being playfield of US and China Cold war. Or become wise in choosing National Sovereignty over Prosperity. restoring good relationship to both China and US and become wise in putting future measures not to become puppets of both the Super power. To achieve success there should be a comprise. You might not accept it but its a bitter reality in this material world.

Jesus, in response to the Pharisees’ question “Who do you think you are?” said, “‘Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.’ ‘You are not yet fifty years old,’ the Jews said to him, ‘and you have seen Abraham!’ ‘I tell you the truth,’ Jesus answered, ‘before Abraham was born, I am!’ At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds” (John 8:56-59). The violent response of the Jews to Jesus’ “I AM” statement indicates they clearly understood what He was declaring-that He was the eternal God incarnate. Jesus was equating Himself with the "I AM" title God gave Himself in Exodus 3:14.

Disputes are property handled thru international arbitration courts which the Philippines did thru the UNCLOS permanent Court of arbitration of the Hague. China and the Philippines being both signatories of UNCLOS are bound to this arbitral court's ruling. China's illegal presence and creeping expansion within the Philippine Exclusive. Economic Zone is a blatant disregard to international rule of UNCLOS China's 1947 nine-dash line claim was invalidated by the UNCLOS Permanent Court of arbitration at the Hague in 2016... China is among the first countries who signed the UNCLOS in 1982 and ratified it in 1994. But China now refuses to follow the rule based order of UNCLOS and rejects the arbitral court's' ruling, and continues asserting its nine-dash line claim. To resolve further territorial disputes, China and the Philippines should submit their Spratley territorial disputes to arbitration by the international court of justice.

The point is we have to stand on our own, we should not rely on our allies unless its a total war scenario. Who would want to be entangled with the war of other countries that is not exactly in their interest? We are not fighting for our selfish gains, in fact we never conquered other countries' territory, we have always been fighting for what is rightfully ours. There's no problem if we too should assert our own claim as they have been doing for a long time, we have our own coast guard and this is the purpose of having one.

Of course Mike Chinoy is neither Chinese nor Pinoy. Imho, he is a prototypical western journalist, more specifically American, who views the world from the point of view of that the world is an arena for global competition and domination. He expressed the belief that China intends to be the dominant power in the Pacific region, which means China does not consider that each country in this region is a sovereign entity, that is a free country that is entitled to its choice of development. This is fast becoming an outdated notion, as evidenced by the growing influence of BRICS, wherein countries are flocking to be part of for the very reason that BRICS has this attractive idea that countries are sovereign states entitled to their own decisions. Being a vassal of the United States is an obloquy that countries are getting rid of. Sadly, the Philippines is embracing this derision, even if its long past due that it should wean itself from suckling on Yankee t i t s.

They just want to dominate the region and turn ASEAN countries into vassals, using the PH as an example of what happens when you defy the CCP.
