Analysing Minecraft's Music (ft. Mumbo Jumbo)

C418's ambient score for Minecraft has to be one of the most intriguing video game soundtracks of all time. Drawing influence from the likes of Brian Eno, Steve Reich and Erik Satie, Minecraft's music is dripping with character, yet remains humble and non-invasive during gameplay. Today I'm taking a look at how Minecraft wound up with this minimalist soundtrack and what gives this music its muted yet curious sound.

Everyone’s talking about the crossover, but even as a brit, if I wasn’t watching the screen I wouldn’t notice the speaker change 😂

The best description of Minecraft's music that I've read (and I forgot where I read it), is that it sounds like a place you can never go back to.

Is nobody talking about how we have never seen mumbo and David in the same place at the same time?

I think this video perfectly ecapsulates why I hate the new Minecraft music so much. It just doesn't fit with the tone of the rest of the tracks (naturally because they are different composers). Sometimes they try to copy the style of C418, but still end up failing because it just doesn't sound right, mainly due to the choice of intruments. For example: most of the original game's songs lack percussion (besides piano), which give that calm feeling that is so essential to making a Minecraft song. Almost every single new song (1.16+) utilizes some kind of percussion, which ruins the calm feel of the song. While creative songs do utilize percussion, the feeling of the song was supposed change as creative mode is a much different experience from survival mode. Furthermore, every single new song was made for a specific biome, which completely contradicts the rest of the music in the game, which was meant for any and all situations. Don't get me wrong, Pigstep and otherside are pretty decent tracks, but thats because they are music discs. Music discs were not meant to be like the rest of the game's songs. They each had their own style to add a bit of variety to the game, without contradicting the whole purpose of the soundtrack. The new survival songs (and to some extent, the new nether songs) do contradict the rest of the soundtrack, however, and I think that's why I don't think that they fit with the game and why I don't like them.

The music in Minecraft is so iconic, I honestly don’t believe Minecraft would be Minecraft without the music

"Sweden" is a piece of music that I cannot listen to without going on a mind trip back to life in 2011. It is so surreal to listen to it that I actually stop myself even though I want to listen to it. It really is magical.

I am a person who's played Minecraft all these years almost entirely in singleplayer. Because of that, I love how the music feels curious yet lonely. The music's "slowness" and non-intrusiveness adds to the feeling of living and exploring in this huge world alone. I like to assume that this may be connected to how Minecraft used to be singleplayer only. I don't think I would enjoy the music as much if I played multiplayer more. I would have expected the music to behave like a character in itself in multiplayer.

I also feel that Minecraft’s music discs also really interesting to look at since they’re nothing like the background music!

Another thing I absolutely love about Minecraft's music; it gives you a sense of loneliness. In single-player, you're trapped in an infinite world with nothing but yourself. Yeah, sure, there are villagers and pets, but there's no one really quite human. I've always felt like it adds to the feeling in the world and that's really what makes it really special :)
