Hello miles away, i really like your channel because you are one of a few synthtuber who really know what he is doing. You have your own style and show beatifully your kind of taste and it feels very authentic. I really hope your channel doesn't transform in endless comparisons and "look what i bought now". Even thats the way to go at the moment. I really like the videos where you show charakteristics of specific synth and nice patches. What is special about a specific synth and what you can do with it. Thats your channel in my point of view.

@@MilesAwayOfficial What I can see so far. LFO are globale on the OB-6 P6 and OBx8. On the top the vintage setting make a lot of difference changing the behaviour of enveloppe, vco, filter and lfo. I also notice even if the LFO are digital it's more hard to get something subtle. The Summit don't try to make his sound vintage, but offer the ability to be a kind of modern DCO or VCO analogue and a bit unstable.

I just found your channel, and have been consuming a few of your presentations over the last hour. I currently own an OB-6, have for a LONG time, and was feeling like it had served its purpose in my setup to a point I no longer felt any... Appreciation for it. Conversely, I've been eying the OB-X8 for a while now and felt like I just REALLY wanted it. Your videos have shown me that that which I have been lusting after, the sounds I've heard of the OB-X8, are actually sounds that the OB-6 can make. I'd basically forgotten, (or replaced via my own crappy patch overwrites) the sound I'd fallen in love with, with the OB-6. That's a really wordy way of saying I still love my OB-6, just not the patches I've created on it. I'm honestly one of those people who buys up a bunch of hardware simply because I love the hardware, not to mention all the wonderful demos there are on KZread, which showcase all of these wonderful machines being played and programmed by people who REALLY know what they're doing. I'm neither very good at keyboarding, nor am I well learned on synthesis. I'm not entirely inexperienced, nor do I have NO understanding of synthesis, I'm just not as well-trained as one should be, or could be, to make the most of these wonderful machines. That doesn't upset me or anything, it's just a statement of fact, I still have a lot to learn, I learn slowly, due to my terrible lack of discipline. I'm more a "fumble around till it works" kind of person than a "study hard and diligently" kind of person. It is what it is. Anyway, seeing your videos on the OB-6, as well as this one, have made it clear to me that it's not the OB-6, it's me. There's still a lot more juiciness I can squeeze out of it, and simply knowing that those gorgeous, crunchy, ear-candy sounds are in there is enough to motivate me to rekindle the passion I once had for it. I'll also hold off on buying the OB-X8. I'm sure it'll be in production for at least a couple more years, so there's time to get it later. I've written more than enough to be "too much", already. Just a really long way of saying that, not only did I enjoy watching your videos, I learned something very valuable. That I can save some money, won't sell a synth I thought I didn't need anymore, and still need to learn more about synthesis. Thank you for this, and all of your other videos.

one other reason the X8 sometimes sounds a bit 'fuller' than OB-6 is due to it have more overlapping notes on long release sounds, 8 voices built up vs 6 is going to sound 'bigger', just like my Prophet 10 does when 10 voices are chiming out (or even my Prologue 16 doing similar sounds). Great video. I used to have an OB-Xa (gave up the ghost) and I love my Prophet 5 (rev 3.3) and these new Sequential/Oberheims really stand up to the old classics. Glad to see the new X8 carries on the voice panning of the old X/Xa/8 line. The new ASM Hydrasynths do this too and it goes a long way to replicating my old OB sounds. I don't understand why more modern synths don't do this voice panning option. A simple 3 note chord sounds so much more massive with even slight random panning.

@ghost mall i think the reason it's not as flattering here is that it's just significantly darker than any of the Sequential stuff. I tried to match the detune / warble levels as close as I could but it's tough to get exact cause the LFOs are all scaled differently. The OB-6 is the only one that is naturally as 'wild' as the X8, so that might be a part of it.

You might be right - but I tend to add vibrato to make the others sound more vintage, which the OB does naturally! Like for example the Summit just doesn’t sound unstable enough without vibrato - hard to match things exactly equal!

The OB6 is not as big as the OB X8 but I am surprised to say this: The OB6 has a prettier top end to me, dunno what to call it, it sounds elegant and a little melancholy right around the top, for sure the OB X8 is thicker though, that thing sounds amazingly big, thicker than anything else! Also others have said this, but damn no kidding the Summit can sound good with tweaking, that's honestly a hell of a sound for 16 voices at that price!

I may agree re the top end, never heard either one in real life. But I have to disagree, the obx8 drips melancholy. I don't know what it is... if I did, I'd patent it. No matter the primary emotional space of an obx8 patch, there is always a melancholic undertone. It is like a chord/harmony versus a bare melody, there is just more there, a complexity an interaction, like a flatted third and a perfect fifth... like real human emotion - we don't ever experience a single emotional state, rather our emotional states are a complex blend of constituent emotions. We may be simply happy, but our happiness is informed by the emotional state we were in before the happiness, as well as our expectations for our subsequent state. But even just in the moment itself, in the happiness itself, there are undertones, of where we are in our life generally, maybe the economy has been falling apart for a few years, and it looks like it is only getting worse, it is harder and harder to make rent and afford meat... how can you have a child if you can't afford to feed yourself. Or your father passed away last year, and you never really knew him. Or your love life has been getting deeper in the last few years, in ways you didn't know you could experience love and attachment... One of those states, or all of them can be lying underneath the simple present state of happiness. So, we experience vastly rich emotional states, and those states are very unique to our personal experience, our past and future emotional states. That is what the obx8 brings to the table, and what synths, and musical instruments are really about, most failing to really create that emotional connection or resonance within the creator or listener. Beyond the tech layer, there is the more real layer, the emotional layer... yeah, maybe you can theoretically do more with a state variable filter, but you, as author, or listeners don't really care; the creator and listener respond to the emotion of the sound, not the technology of the synth. Of course, the technology can be used to craft emotionally resonant sounds, I mean, that is actually what a synth is synthesizing... but all the tech in the world cannot create emotion if the deep tech, the tech the synth programmer/player doesn't have access to, isn't there. It is only the synth designer/engineer who has access to that deep core sound that either connects to humans... or does not, or in this particular case, does in a certain way, with a certain emotional tone. Honestly all these synths sound good, the Summit the least, as it is the most static, despite attempts at programming life into that patch, but still, they all sound good. But the obx8 just drips feeling to me. Like raw, unabated melancholy. Anyway. Cheers.

I see you have the HD600s, mine have lasted almost 20 years but I run the 6XX for a darker tone. I'll say 1 thing, I think the OBX8 is possibly a little hot coming in, not from interface but the actual synth. I did hear what appeared to be clipping, cannot find it now but it was when you where doing the resonance sweeps. This is not an easy thing for you to do when you're trying to a matched patch with different gear as the patches themselves will have different gain staging to start of with. Dynamics will be different in some cases, I applaud your efforts and I will say one thing, nothing will replicate what the OBX8 can do. Others may get close but there is a reason the OBX8 exists, and it does 3 heritage synths fantastically. It has full scope (OK found the peak 6:10 onwards, you will hear the signal clip and I think it's too hot a signal coming in, or could be a YT thing) on the oscillators which make this the ultimate synth for old school and new. You pay for it, diminishing returns but that's with everything. I will never be able to afford one but that doesn't mean I cannot admire what it can do. I also probably wouldn't want one as it's a player's synth, I do more manipulation in my sets, I tend to like desktops more too as they take up less space. Much appreciated for your efforts, it's a monumental task and that setup is clean. Yamahas I spy in the distance?

EVen through decent £80 media speakers and youtube the X8 sounds amazing for this type of sound but it`s price is in the Hypercar territory whereas the OB6 ( I have one ) is also reguarded as a high end synth but it`s only in the SUpercar territory reguarding the price and it stacks up very well the main downside is voice stealing for slow attack/release pads whereas the X8 would deal with this problem much better. As for the other synths they are great bits of gear for what they are but a bit more meh for this type of sound.

I bought also the obx8 and want to tell you: I send it back. I also have the ob6. Why? It really has a fantastic sound but i learned that sound isn't all when i had it. First the price is objectivly too expensive. In comparison to synth like polybrute, ob6 and prophet 10. it can be of course subjectivly be worth it. Second: with the ob6 i connected immediately. Also with synth like the evolver mek or analog four. I knew very fast what it can do for me and sound making process is very quick. On the obx8 this page 2 thing i didn't liked and in my opinion it disturbs the workflow for me. Also some features where just not my kind of taste. No direct mixing. Saw osc fm on or off. Also soundwise i was not that happy than i thought. I had the vision that the obx8 will surpass the ob6 in every way. But for me it doesn't. I really think the ob6 filter is mor beautiful with the exception of the notch filter. Also the fm sound isn't as pleasing as the p5 fm. P5 fm is king, really. Then it has no filter fm which is one of my favorite synth features and so great on the ob6.!!! Also on the p5. The highlight for me where the vco's. They sounded so great when you just detune them with the fine tune. So glossy thick and chorus like. Insane. Thats the best thing for me on this synth. But in the higher register of notes the obx8 is a little sharp. Listen to high notes on the x8. And one last point. The envelopes where also not completely my kind of taste with the ob8 the more usefull. So as you can see there where too many downsides for me. Too many for 5600 euro. And another thing was that i had a ob6 allready. I have some other sequentials too. And though the x8 is something different than the ob6. It is kind of samey in a way. I thought: why not looking for somthing which sounds different. And there are some great alternatives which are also so beatiful. For example: Black coporation deckards dream Black coporation kijimi! Gs music e7 is also very bestiful. Moog one is something to condider and something which you have to hear by yourself to judge. And the 3rd wave is also a eardream. With that in mind. The obx8 is a great synth but surely not for everybody. The status, hype and it is exclusiv. I found a kijimi for the old price and will try it out. The mk2 kijimi is also something to consider because of the new filter. And you have the obx8, the ob6 and the prophet 6. i hope you choose the right synth and it is totally yours. Best Markus Thats all

Love your stuff. IF everything sounds amazing or essentially the same goodness level how does the 6 seem to be better than the 8 and $1,100 less for the model and $1,500 difference in the full size unit? It's not logical that the same company would sabotage their own gear. Therefore there must be a rational explanation why the 8 is that much better because you get what you pay for. The separation is massive because for another $1,500 you could buy a Peak or almost a Osmose and the Yamaha CK61 is only $999. This illustrates the gravity of difference. IF everyone prefers the 6 and a few videos leak out all sounds being equal nobody is going to purchase the 8 via common sense. So what's the catch or the problem with such a spread while apparently getting so much less on the 8? I instantly bought the 8 before I knew anything about the 6 so now I'm asking what gives? I'd realistically never even considered the 6 because I typical buy the highest grade offered if only to test drive it before deciding to keep it. Nobody seems to be claiming the 8 is worth it or superior however at the price point it should be. Could they be justifying spending less and and not telling to total truth about the 8? True most can't afford the X8 price point so if we ignored the pricing completely for a moment which just sounds better period? I'd assume they had a massive fail if the X8 doesn't dominate in sound because that's all it's got left. The 6 beats it in every other way except 8 voice and authenticity to the originals. The X8 just came out so if the 6 is still better is the pricing an epic fail? Will it dramatically fall or is this like paying homage to a 70/80s god and to have it, you'll have to pay an inflated price? OR does it realistically sound better if total honesty? Sound is the bottom line above all other features in the mind of many. Should these units be priced exactly the same? Thoughts anyone?
