History:
Anahawan was formerly a barrio of the Municipality of Hinundayan, Southern Leyte. On January 1, 1930, Governor General Dwight F. Davis proclaimed Anahawan as a municipality. He named the town Delgado, in honor of Congressman Jorge Delgado of Leyte Province.
In the olden days, palm trees called “anahaw” grew abundantly in the area. Its leaves were used as a roofing material, which made the palm trees valuable to the locals. The villagers fondly called the place “Anahawan” as was later confirmed by the Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Gorordo, who officially christened the place Anahawan.
The popularity of the name prompted Congressman Delgado to have the town’s name reverted back to Anahawan through Act 3705 which was passed by the 8th Philippine Legislature on November 30, 1930, entitled “An Act Providing That The Municipality Of Delgado, Leyte Shall Be Called “Anahawan”.”
