Ana Vidovic plays Recuerdos de la Alhambra by Francisco Tárrega on a Jim Redgate classical guitar
Classical guitars are our passion! We are specialized in the highest quality concert guitars as well as historic guitars from around the world. Our passion for these unique instruments and the joy to give guitarists, passionate players, and collectors the possibility to purchase their own appropriate instrument is the motivation that drives us. Another focus is to work closely with established and young, largely unknown luthiers. Together we want to develop new ideas and share experiences with our customers.
We also recorded pieces for many great composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Astor Piazzolla and Isaac Albeniz (Asturias). You will also find almost all the classical music composers that wrote for the classical guitar. Make sure to discover Agustin Barrios Mangoré, Manuel Maria Ponce, Heitor Villa-Lobos and many more if you don't know their compositions already
You can find our show room in 76137 Karlsruhe, Roonstr. 31, Germany

Jim Redgate is a highly sought-after Australian luthier, known for his guitars built for artists such as Ana Vidovic, Pepe Roméro and Odair Assad. This lattice-braced model is an exact copy of the guitar that Ana Vidovic plays. Jim Redgate’s instruments have their own sound and touch. The breath-taking volume combined with rich harmonics and impressive clarity of sound are quite unique. The playability is fantastic, and the guitars are relatively light in weight compared to the Australian standard.
We’ve of course heard Ana Vidovic in concert many times playing on a Redgate guitar, but this guitar convinced us even more of the quality of Jim’s work. The honesty and spontaneity of each note, the magnificent volume, the ease of playing, and the unique sound character of this guitar make it an instrument not only rare in Europe, but above all extremely enchanting.
Luthier: Jim Redgate
Construction year: 2019
Top: Cedar/Lattice
Back and sides: Bolivian rosewood
Scale: 650 mm
Nut: 52 mm
Weight: 1633 grams

My spanish father, who was a flamenco guitarist used to play this, for almost all of my life. He died two years ago, at the age of 86. I avoided listening to it, for a very long time. Because I knew my heart would be filled with so much joy and so much sadness at the same time. Those feeling are hard to cope with. Anyway, I'm glad I did today.

The song is actually really simplistic lol. In the bass just the typical arpeggiated chords and the trill / high melody is just a nice little slow melody, very few notes just with that tremolo effect. I do agree, it is quite delightful music

Ana Vidovic playing this song is where interpretation comes into play and shines. I don't care about the fact she does tremolo with only 2 fingers or other things like that. The dynamic is just phenomenal. The amount of emotion and feeling of her interpretation is unmatched. Interpretation is a way to make a bunch of notes and chords something much alive. I have listened to a lot of other world class classical guitarist interpreting this piece. In my opinion no one come close to this recording in terms of feeling and energy. Bravo

Yeah I totally agree, her interpretation is just beautiful! I was just surprised by the fact that she is using only 2 fingers - I know some guitarists use that technique as an exercise but it was surprising for me to see that in a concert. Anyway, I am no guitarist, so my question was out of sheer curiosity. In any case, it sounds beautiful.

There is no such law that all chords should match the overall feel. But it's true that many guitarists do senseless things like banging out the last chord even though, being usually the home key, it is what you expect the piece to end on. So it's not something unexpected and significant to emphasize.

I confess I've enjoyed the loud finish I've heard in other renditions. It seems to invoke a naive, raw, unsophisticated but joyous spirit as one might imagine could be associated with the beautiful scenery of Andalusia (no I'm not fancy but I was very lucky to visit the Alhambra once). This is the first one I've heard with the more expected ending, and I like it very much.

I heard her play this live about 10 - 12 years ago. Recordings don't do her justice, because her use of dynamics -- loud & soft contrasts -- is much more striking when one hears it live. Also, I like her fingering/choice of strings in the opening phrases. It's not the usual one, & I prefer hers because it is more smooth & flowing. And the 2-finger tremolo -- it seems more natural than the 3-finger. I think it might work better for many people if they practiced it from the start. (It might have for me, but it is far too late...).

The three finger tremolo is hard to make the tremolo even. I kept hearing the tremolo coming in set of three instead of an even flow, even when a professional plays. I imagine it would be more natural to do tremolo in set of 2 or 4 notes, but of course using 4 fingers is impractical.

I'm going to have to say that this performance captures the true essence of the piece. The tempo is perfect...and the Rubato is beautifully subtle - to maximize emotional impact. This is the best version- of possibly the best piece ever written for the guitar.

@@amisil1549 I think it works because she sacrifices certain homogeneity of the tremolo sound, but in turn she allows herself to play each individual note of the tremolo with more expressiveness and musicality. It’s beautiful if you listen to the tremolo as a whole (sounds like a crying lament) or if you focus on the individual notes. Must be super difficult to play it like that.
