An unpleasant truth about NYC handball.

Спорт

A well played game of handball is a sign of good life, an expert level of game is a sign of waste of life.
My thoughts on the sport: One-wall Handball in NYC.

I have been playing longer than anyone here -- age 70 and playing much of my life. 4W, 3W, 1W, you name it -- always a journeyman, never a legend. Married x 45 years, worked and paid for my entire college and medical school education but always found sanctuary in the game, win or lose. So, Mr Liu, you are playing the perfect game for a different reason than why I -- or any of my 4 sons play (one of whom runner up senior mens world championship 2018) -- love of the game. It ain't about the $$ or the fame, sir. If this is what you think, mate, then you have far bigger problems than HB addiction. Grow up, study hard, devote yourself to a career and family...but rediscover the game for the passion and not wht material gains are in it for you. Btw, ATP tennis requires way more devotion and maturity than you are exhibiting here anyway.

I understand the desire to elevate handball over other sports such as tennis and basketball. But those sports also have numerous nuances and complexities. Handball is not intrinsically superior. And I fear the important parts of your message could be lost to an attack on your effort to claim otherwise. Anyway, my view is that the reason handball is not a mainstream or popular sport has nothing to do with the income level of the players, their attitude, or the cost of playing the game. After all, basketball is essentially just as cheap and has the same character of players yet it is a thousand times more played and watched. The same goes for soccer. Rather, the reason handball is not popular is because handball is virtually unknown in most of the U.S. I bet there are more handball walls in New York City -- about 2000 -- than in the rest of the country (maybe the world) combined. And the only reason there are handball courts here in New York City is because of a confluence of two events that did not exist anywhere else. (1) heavy Irish immigration (they brought the game here from Ireland) and (2) the ascension to power of a man named Robert Moses, who wanted to keep the masses happy and, in service of that goal, built hundreds of parks all over New York City in the 1920's through 1950's. New York is unique among major cities in having so many recreational facilities spread all over its residential areas. (Paris, for example, has exactly one public basketball court that I know of.) Because of the popularity of the game among the Irish, which spread to other groups here in New York, Robert Moses included handball walls in many of the parks he built. So, handball became even more popular. That's probably why you play it: a handball wall was easily accessible to you. Handball is one of the most New York things there is. Most of the rest of the world has never heard of handball. For that reason, no one is interested in watching it on television. So the sport is likely to stay in just the few places it is now. One last point: I completely understand your desire to avoid all the negativity that some players show. But that's easily done. Find some good players who are also decent human beings and spend time playing handball with them. There are plenty of such players around. You sound like one of them.

I'm came to this conclusion after having a long talk with my uncle. He told me if I keep practicing and become the best ill be a bum. I then quit and worked on my life. Now I'm almost 40 and I have what I never thought I would.... then I discovered handball again. This time not to be the best, not because I'm just a street kid, but for excersice. Started playing and lost over 30 pounds, my testosterone had increased, i started working out again, my dad bod is gone. I think people need something to play. A goal. I once felt like you but years later I'm realizing that you can get much more out of handball than you think.

I grew up on the streets of Los Angeles playing ball. Unfortunately our great sport of handball doesn't get any recognition or respect lt actually deserves. Yes our sport have so much history but Hate to say this, in LA the non players treat it like a jail house sport. I feel I need to change that. They are knocking more outdoor courts in LA. It sucks, you do see guys drinking, smoking, betting, arguing out loud, the cholos hanging around. See, I do this for a passion and I achieve so many goals of mine in Handball. Reach #1 (4-wall) , won many multiple tournaments, from Jr Nationals, winning Worlds, a collegiate title, qualify to be a pro. Honeslty there's hope and structure in this game but as Americans we should promote this lovely game of ours, for the better. We need to have great leaders to change the opinions of others. I will always play this sport and it's time to give back what handball provided for me.

I grew up in NJ in the 80s, nearly every town had a handball court. Noone cared about a future in handball. It was you and your regular pals and the other neighborhood peeps. Shit, we even got dropped off in the morning an hour early to play handball at school before class. Such a simple game that can bring the neighborhood together that almost anyone can enjoy. You could have a miserably poor existence, be a geek, or any other stereotype and yet at the wall your a fuckin legend. I do wish that it was more popular across the country. I'm in Texas now, hand ball court is a foreign term.

Handball is fun - that’s a good enough reason to play it. The friendships people make are deeper than in other sports I’ve played, and they make peoples lives better than many investments. This whole message seems really shallow to me. Worthy things in life are not about “arriving” - they are about the process of development together. I don’t know anybody who played a lot of handball and regretted it. Beyond this classist argument - you ignore the fact that the people playing are playing handball instead of some negative things. Handball saves lives. Throw some melodramatic music behind that and play handball. It’s a better use of your time than this video.

Just thinking about what he said years ago how he rejected basketball and football I guess scholarship on a video about nyc handball and he also mentioned where he works I wonder if he regrets those words.

I use to be hours on the court rainbow park sunset park Brooklyn morning to sundown. Their is an addiction to the sport. The amount of Endorphins you release from smacking that ball. I’ve seen a lot of bad things happen in my years of just being on the floor a lot of drinking and gambling going on. Couldn’t enjoy a free game without everyone playing for money. Same situation on grand street Chinatown. I will always love the game of handball But I would rather have my priorities straight and balance out my time between God, marriage and raising children. I may not be as good as I once was but I still play here and there Lose or win I have nothing to prove but all to gain from strangers I played against and with and made some pretty cool friends. We could also have a life and be the best if you truly are passionate about the sport the key is balance

I must agree with Liu. I started to play at the age of 11 years old in Pico Rivera CA. I watched some of the greatest players when it was an actioned packed sport at large tournaments with rules and no betting or pot smokers/crackheads. The game was beautiful and athletes played the game. Soon after the CHANGA game came around which was more adjusted to the none athletes that drank and smoked pot. I see a lot of comments on here and some of the comments bieng shared are from players I know. I have had conversations with top pros in the game and most agree with the comments made by Liu. Most have dedicated so much time to the game and got a few dollars out of the game. Like Lui, I also noticed at a young age that the game I loved would go nowhere. Most of my friends and successful people I looked up to play the game as a good recreational sport and that's all it has been for me. Many of the courts that have been taken down in LA have been because of our friends that drink, piss and bring drugs to the courts. In Ireland, handball is a national sport that attracts some of the country's best athletes and it shows because of the dominance they show on the court. In the USA it's a dying sport just look at the presence of payers that attended this year's USHA nationals. Yes, the sport is an Unpleasant Truth even when it has been called the Perfect Game and we can all defend our thoughts because it's a sport that is in our hearts but it is what is.

And there is nothing at end ? Or there is players who plays for stress realize or having exercise as u said in part 2?. According to your video you are playing with 2 ideas. However there is small amount of players in nyc who only plays and dont work. But for high percentage of players they have job and handball is just their hobby. Being pro yes you can't achieve much but pain. But being whom wanna play for own enjoyment not for money you achieve alot, exercise, keep body feed by not spending any money at same time enjoying the game.

anything is possible. you can create your reality. but yes financial is a big part. also most sports are funded by the government and backed up by corporations. its possible for handball to get there but who is willing to do it. i think if u love handball its best to start small. like angel marquez who makes tutorial videos. start small. handball united is cool too. the small things matter eventually handball can get there. be the change you want to see. the way to elevate handball is to throw tournaments and the prizes have to be big. its human biology. reward system. but rewarding people to play handball and they forget about their lives is bad too. handball has to incorporate schooling and education work help etc. i plan to run a tournament in the future and i will give a real gold medal but first i need to get financially free. good luck to those who have love for the sport.

I don’t think he understands the dynamic of handball. It’s not about money at the end of the day. It’s about companionship, competitiveness, and the streets. It’s a game made for New York. It’s the street element of the game which makes it attractive. It is meant to give you happiness and piss you off. Shit talking is always welcomed and the money won is just a bonus for loving something so much. It’s also a game that is on the rise across this country and world. I see more videos being posted daily of people playing handball then ever before. More eyes equals more exposure which is what the game increasingly is getting.

'brooklynhandball' is right on. Yet, in addition, you have to love this game like you Love your own Life. It is *like* Life: it is how you handle the ball you're given. This sport is contentious and is for passionate, driven and self confident (yes, a little haughty too) people. Yet, also - let us be real and honest: Handball is a 'minority' sport. Basketball and baseball are too yet not to the extent of Handball; it is mostly 'black' and 'LatinX'. The Asian community is a recent addition of the past decade (here in NYC). The reasons for it being dissed are complex and is a multi-leveled socio-political juggernaut we could debate until the cows come home. --Founder, The West 4th Handball Club ____________________________________________________________________________________

You're at an age where you're not going to get anything out of tennis either, by your parameters. Only kids who are dominating NYJTL have any hope of that. By the time your age ends in -teen if you are not dominating in a junior league of some kind, recreational sports are for nothing more than the enjoyment, the exercise, and maybe a smidget of personal glory here and there. Handball is no better than the other sports recreationally but it's no worse either. Could 1-wall handball make it to that professional/Olympic level one day? Perhaps. It all starts at the bottom. There's no NYJHL and only 11% of NYC high schools have a handball team. It's not even a popular sport in its own city. I don't know the percentage of colleges in the USA that have handball teams but I'm sure it's far less than that. Until those numbers drastically change it's going to remain a street sport. If your goals in a recreational sport are a great workout, great friends, and great post-work stress relief, you've come to the right place. If your goals are maintaining a pipeline to big money, sponsors, and a Wikipedia page, then you're better off with pickleball. I agree that kids who are a single-digit age and are showing potential to get to the top of another sport should not be strayed to handball. For something-teen year olds who have not shown any potential, nothing wrong with them taking up handball. That market will always be there.

It just never picked up on a national level. Also, there's no financial incentive for handball as you said. Anyone that takes handball seriously is a loser in my eyes unless you're at the top of your game and winning most tournaments. It's just something to do for fun and to stay fit. Anything more than that is a waste of time. Let me say that I feel most of the people that are obsessed with handball are often using handball to escape from the realities of life.

Handball can be a way to create life long friendships, great moments and good times, and what’s life if not good times with good peoples?

You’re statement is irrelevant, you said that you think people who take handball seriously is a loser, unless they are top players who win.. but if you don’t take it seriously then how are you able to achieve top and get better. You just sound like someone who can beat average players and just making excuses on KZread

@@binlongwu8908 Nah, I used to play quite a bit and was beating high Bs (which is far from an average player). I noticed that many of the serious players didn't have much of a life outside of handball and these players are not even trying to go pro. This makes me ask why would you take handball seriously when there's no incentive? Many are using it as an escape.

I wanted to leave a comment somewhere -I appreciate this kids personal opinion, the way he openly trys to juggle and fails shows he's curious to others opinions and possibly looking for that camaraderie Handball gives, Between my family alone we have about a 100 years and probably more of playing handball... So I will leave you with one of our family quotes. " if God wanted us to play racquetball he would have made our hands into webs" 😄. So. caL Handball, Gil And Lenny Handball promotions.
