An Unforgettable Early Morning Walk in a Televised Village || ENGLAND

So, today we are out and about walking in the Cotswold village and civil parish of Lacock, which is located four miles south of Chippenham in Wiltshire.
Lacock is probably one of the most beautiful & picturesque villages in England. The village is owned by the National Trust. Over the years several TV shows & films have used Lacock as a filming location, which is not surprising as it really is like stepping back in time which is perfect for period dramas etc...
Lacock's Abbey is also a very popular tourist attraction. The abbey dates back to the early 13th Century, founded by Ela the Countess of Salisbury. There is also a parish church - St Cyriac. The village population is under 200 people.
There is just one OAAW logo somewhere in this video, see if you can spot it!
Thanks for walking with me.

It is good to see what towns looked like when designed around scale of a human being (and horse) instead of trucks and cars. Your style of filming also brings back the awareness of the moment which slows time down. ❤❤❤ The pedestrian bridges over clear winding streams with cobbled stream beds, the running stone gutters along buildings and roads, and narrow streets with a sharp turning radius are part of a dreamy past. Today we could never build such artistic drainage solutions in America with state department of transportation codes and the budget-busting cost of granite and its installation. It is all about wide turning radii for trucks, expansive parking lots, and concrete and asphalt materials. That is no environment for humans.

I'm not at all a morning person, so these videos are enlightening, and I find the crowing of the rooster to be delightful, and the misty morn invigorating. This one is particularly wonderful, and briefly made me consider getting up early tomorrow. Unfortunately, no picturesque village and ancient churchyard here in my bit of Michigan, and our spring is barely emerging. But I will recall this walk as I roll over and catch a few more winks. Thanks!

Once these were working villages, Parish centric, with families going back hundreds of years, without being an aristocrat. The security as a child growing up in the countryside was dreamlike, peace and Nature and old family would lull you into a Matrix of country life with its layers of collective memory interwoven with timeless Oak woods and the scent of hand cut hay and horse harness. The Seasons came and went and The Spirit of Place , drifting through trees with her ever watchful eye, was visible to those who can see.

Visited Lacock in 2006 as part of a 3 stop tour. The other stops were Bath and Stonehenge at sunset. We ate at a little 13th century pub in Lacock. Shepherd's pie and sticky toffee pudding. Then bought some lovely handmade soaps at a little shop there. It was beautiful. Love seeing the areas we didn't get to see that day.

So much to say but just so much to see!! This walk hit every sense in my body & as weird as it sounds even your logo had my attention as he was gliding on the water. 😁 My morning coffee with the birds on your walk were the perfect thing to wake up too & loved seeing one fly to the bridge. I did enjoy it when you backed up, very nice touch!! So lovely to see & hear Spring in other places as well as home. I just may have to watch this one again, especially the brginning. The villages are so storybook & enchanting but it's you that bring it all together & make it so magical....thank you for doing this, I so love it. Have a wonderful week ahead & I hope you keep some of that magic for yourself as well. ❤

Hi Michele. Great to hear from you. Hope you had a nice weekend. Thanks ever so much for your lovely comment. I do find Lacock quite a tricky village to film in fact I filmed it previously around last October if I remember correctly but ended up scrapping the footage because I just wasn’t happy with it (the perils of having OCD!). I repeated the route almost identically on this walk so I had an advantage of already knowing exactly where I would start and finish the walk. Fortunately this time around I am probably about 80% happy which to be fair is actually quite high for me. I can honestly say there isn’t a single walk that I have done that I am 100% happy with, majority of the time the percentage rate probably sits at around 50%! Sorry for wittering on and deviating from your comment somewhat! I really do appreciate your feedback as it very much helps in many ways. Have tiptop week too. OAAW

Hey OAAW~ Nice little country village.😉 The architecture, the construction, the stone work… so beautiful. I loved all the birds, especially the rooster. And the Abbey! What was it like to wake up in your car after a snow storm? Clearly you are dedicated, but you must see some beautiful sights that don’t make it into your walk videos…. Question: Who takes care of the walking paths like the one you are on in the last part of this video - so they are walkable? Here’s to a good weekend before an also good week next week!

Hi Cheryl. It is really good to hear from you. It was a pleasant unexpected surprise to wake up to snow outside but boy was I frozen! Still not my coldest overnighter...the worst was earlier this year when it was minus 7 inside! Yes, I often see some beautiful sights throughout my travels, which does make me wish I could share them all! Usually footpaths are maintained by the local council but often residents may have a group of volunteers that may supplement their area with things like litter picking etc. It is normally the same for church grounds, local parishners may assist with keeping things neat and tidy. Hope you have a lovely weekend, Cheryl. Many thanks. OAAW

@@OutandaboutWalking Hey OAAW. The condition of your trails is impressive. I recently read an article about the horrible trash, etc. (including dead bodies), near the top of Mt. Everest. Such behavior is sad to see, so I find myself happy to see how well your trails are maintained. Maybe it is because the way your village communities are set up? They are much smaller in size so maybe there is more interest in maintaining them? I'm always struck where I am in the US Northeast how less involved or accommodating people seem to be. Anyway.... Thank you. My weekend has been beautiful so far, starting off with my second latte and your video. ;)

@@cherylb6755 that does indeed sound like a marvellous way to kick start your day :). I will let you in on a little secret but shhh don’t tell anyone ;) I did some litter picking before I started this walk, partly because the video would benefit from it but also because it was nice to feel like I was helping out in some small way in the village. I must say tho there was not an awful lot of rubbish to pickup, which is not surprising after seeing how full up one of the rubbish bins was. I’m the same if I go on a beach and I see litter, the thought of it ending up in the ocean and hurting marine life makes me really sad 😢. Plastics are the worse. Cheryl here is to a pleasant week ahead for both of us after a very nice weekend :).

It is early morning here now as I finally have gotten to watch your video in its entirety. (I like to wait til I can give your videos my full attention; you are so meticulous and purposeful in filming everything from lovely panoramas to interesting details that I like to watch them with similar careful attention). What a wonderful town- and even if you hadn’t told us that this place frequently gets used for period-drama movies and mini-series, I would have instantly wondered about that, as the scenery and buildings were so obviously appropriate for that. I could just picture Elizabeth Bennett and her sisters walking down those streets, past the shops! This prompted me to look up filming locations for the 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice mini-series (my favorite rendering of this classic), and Lacock did indeed double as the fictional town of Meryton for this film. No wonder the scenes looked so familiar! What a charming town, and how interesting (though perhaps at times inconvenient) it must be for residents to have their village used in this way! You mentioned that the town belongs to the national trust. Does this mean that the homes are not privately owned, but are rented from the NT? I just wondered about that. I also wondered what type of bird made that loud, high-pitched, two-syllable call that we heard for several minutes, starting around the 23 minute mark? I tried using my bird ID app as KZread played, but (as I suspected would be the case), the bird app is geared to live recording, not picking up calls from KZread films. It was unfamiliar to me. I really enjoyed hearing all the different chirps and calls of the various birds, and the rooster was certainly in good voice! The scenes by the bridge and along the gently flowing stream were truly lovely, and peaceful! I would love to be sitting there, enjoying the song of the water splashing over the rocks. All of the walk was wonderful (so hard to pick out favorite things, as everything seems to make the “favorite” list), and thank you again for the trouble and time you take to film these delightful walks. P. S. Though not seen in this video, you mentioned awakening to snow! That must have been lovely, as I know that you had previously lamented the snowless winter you had this year…..

Hi Janet. It is really good to hear from you. I hope you are OK and Mr Ryan is doing well. Thanks ever so much for your wonderful comment. I am really glad your enjoyed our walk in this lovely location. I must say, It is quite amazing to think that given how far away you live you have watched ‘P & P’. I remember watching some of the ‘behind the scenes’ from it and it was very surreal to see the streets where the residents vehicles parked are normally parked which were instead replaced with sizeable film crews. I don’t know if the NT owns every property there but I would hazard a guess that the majority are rented from them. The National Trust do some really marvellous work here in the UK…I myself have been a member for many years now. Do you have NT equivalents in the US? I also wondered what type of bird that was around the 23 min mark, first of all I though maybe an unusual kind of cockerel sound but then wondered if it was a peacock! Hopefully someone will be able to confirm what it is as it would be good to satisfy our curiosity:) Ah yes, the snow walk in Lacock, I had no idea it was going to snow. That was about 16 months ago but only seems like a week ago! Scary how fast time seems to go these days…I remember thinking that as a young child the summers always seemed endless and my friends and I would stay that age forever :). Perhaps in some way, these walks are reminiscent of childhood times in the sense that we still like to go in search of adventure but on a more sensible level? ( no more tree climbing etc 😀 )Enjoy the rest of your day, Janet and thanks again for your kind support & every comment you have ever written, it really means a lot. OAAW

@@OutandaboutWalking We actually have access to many British shows here, and have had for quite some time. :) One channel that we get on our local tv is from PBS (public broadcasting service), and this is funded by member subscriptions rather than by businesses (no ads!). Because of this fact, the programming fare is much more unique and (I think) interesting, as they are able to purchase and show programs that members (anyone can pledge funds of support) want to see, rather than shows that supposedly will sell products via advertisements. This has- through the decades- included lots of British shows. Britcoms were always a favorite of ours, as well as the more serious programming- and I have checked out from our local library more DVDs of Jane Austen and other classic literature dramatizations from the UK than I can count! The 1995 presentation of P&P has been watched by me so many times (I have it on a 6-DVD set) that I could quote back to you multiple large chunks of the dialogue! :) I, too, watched the “behind the scenes” feature that you spoke of, and likewise found it interesting- especially seeing the measures that prep crews had to take to remove all visual evidences of modern life from this English village, to make it look as it would have looked back in the 1800s…..no small undertaking! Your question about the National Trust over here was a good one, but I did not know the answer- though I surely expected that we did have one. I looked it up online and confirmed that we do, and it is based in Washington DC. It functions as does your UK one. I also do know that in our area here there are buildings that are designated as historic structures, even if privately owned- and in these cases, owners need special permission from authorities to do any kinds of alterations or remodeling to the houses (especially outwardly, where it is seen), to not spoil their historic integrity. Often these places sport a plaque on the front, telling the date on which they were built. Yes, adventures take many forms- especially after we pass childhood! A great walk where we observe the beauties and interesting things we pass definitely qualifies- as does any other interesting new experience, or any fun thing that we attempt to learn. I look on every new musical instrument that I try to tackle learning as an adventure! :) Have a great rest-of-the-week, and weekend! I will look forward to whatever adventure you have for your viewers next. :)

Windbag here! Grand opening volley, simply beautiful. The birds were certainly chirpy and showoffy what with photo bombing, fly dips, perches. They see a camera and boom, feathers everywhere. THAT was 😎 the camera rising on its crane, the silent engine moving forward panning into the jungle then gliding over the bridge into mysteries. Do folks actually drive through the creek? Cotswolders do so have the most intriguing constructions to preserve & further beautify the naturals. And I do cotton to weedies emerging from cracks, ivys crawling walls, mildew painted everywhere, pots showing assorteds. Wait, I say, Sir🕶️, that was the coolest unexpected - walking backwards into that cubby. And blimey the birds, the creepy coocoo wailing from an insane asylum! 🥶ing! A straw Fedora! To be totally unashamed repairing buildings with mismatched materials, just marvelous! The ornate iron gates but more especially door hinges. Would that I could get me hands on some for me solid wood interior doors, twould look smashing! Dissolved the mystery why noone takes me seriously. But me ears aren't false, yours is very very nice and has a rowdy happy lilt. Actually I could tell, was amazed and proud of the blur-patience and care but then later in video the blur 🪄became fog obliterating a whole swath of vehicles, I knew, I knew, but yet a 💡 popped in what a clever way to handle the situation, mass blurring removes the consumption of time while still revealing the main scenery...being it's a rare necessity tis easier on viewers not always bending the neck in half to eyeball the sky and miss the point of our visit; a compromise you could say. It also by happenstance obscures someone seated inside or exiting.. double propriety. @jaclynmwvasquez think you need a new nickname…maybe EE - Eagle Eyes 👀! 😁🤣. Funny enough I did the same thing in the ‘Upton’ video with a few cars just by the riverside pub. On this occasion tho it was down to time constraints as I was keen to get it scheduled for today (which nearly didn’t happen after what happened the other day which I think I told you about) and I tried to do it in such a way that it would hopefully not interfere with the architecture too much. I have an analogy for blurring out plates…imagine cutting the grass on a soccer pitch with a pair of nail scissors, at times when there are many vehicles like in this video that is just what it feels like - mission impossible! Hence why I often pan up to the sky to purposefully to try and not include vehicles as often as possible, which also doubles up as a great way to build towards a reveal shot, plus I just get a buzz from looking up skywards :). As far as I am aware this is the only walking channel on YT that does this?
