Omg, the pianist's reaction time is insane! He basically played his first note about .5 seconds after when he "should" have hit, once he realized the mistake. Yes he gave the conductor a weird look of confusion afterwards but he really caught on so quick.

He was supposed to start with Rachmaninov. That's what he chose to do and it was in the programme. But, as he was about to go on stage the announcer said he was going to play Tchaikovsky. This caused a little stir and some laughter in the audience and the announcer corrected his mistake by scrambling and saying something I presume like 'but first we will hear Rachmaninov'. But it was all in Russian so it was confusing. As far as An Tianxu was concerned, he heard Tchaikovsky first, then Rachmaninov. So have they switched? The conductor, standing beside An Tianxu, didn't help either as he just smiled and nodded his head, as if to offer reassurance, but there was no clarity. There was a seed of doubt planted in An Tianxu's head. There was a seed of doubt in my head. I wasn't sure which they were going to play first. And unfortunately, neither did An Tianxu. There should have been a moment of clarity here. The poor guy is about to play in the final of arguably the biggest piano competition in the world and his nerves and adrenaline must have already been sky high. You could tell by his demeanor that he was a little on edge, perhaps a little confused and need in of reassurance - 'not to worry, just as we rehearsed'. The conductor or one of the people in the wing should have clearly confirmed that the announcer had made a mistake and that it was to be Rach first. Hopefully, this incident will provide a silver lining and actually help his career.

The employee did NOT put the wrong music on the stands and was not to blame. If that were the case, then the conductor and orchestra would have been the ones to start the wrong concerto. The announcer got it wrong (saying Tchaikovsky) then corrected himself (Rachmaninov). Rachmaninov was first - the running order had been changed from Tchaikovsky to Rachmaninov earlier that afternoon - and therefore all the music stands which had Rachmaninov were correct. The paper schedule pinned on the back of the backstage door had not been updated, hence the announcer read it wrongly and announced Tchaikovsky. The pianist remained in doubt because: a) he himself hadn't been informed of the afternoon change either; and; b) there was the language barrier when the announcer corrected himself.

The presenter mistakenly announced the program of the competitor’s performance in the order of “Tchaikovsky-Rachmaninov” in Russian and English, but immediately afterwards apologized and called the correct order of the program. But only in Russian. It is assumed that the contestant decided that the order of the performance of the works was replaced. The chairman of the jury in the specialty “piano” Denis Matsuev was officially invited by An Tian to play his program again. Member officially refused.

Orchestra and conductor notes of the works of P. I. Tchaikovsky and S. V. Rakhmaninov were laid out in reverse order - different from the order stated by the participant. In this connection, the performance began with a failure - the participant did not immediately understand what had happened, and switched to another work already during the performance.

Actually, something similar happened to Seong-Jin Cho at the 2011 Tchaikovsky Competition! Another Russian Conductor(Alexander Dmitriev), screwed up an important orchestral passage during the 1st movement of the Tchaikovsky Concerto. This threw off Cho's otherwise impeccable performance of the Tchaikovsky B minor Concerto. Cho came in 3rd. The eventual winner was Trifonov. Many fans felt Trifonov made too many mistakes to have beaten Cho. Especially if Cho was not negatively effected by the conductor's "error".. This video can be seen right here, on Yu tube.

Visnja, I am the biggest Trifonov fan. But he did make some uncharacteristic errors at the 14th Tchaikovsky Competition. Plus he should not have played the Chopin Concerto as his 2nd Concerto of choice. Frankly, Trifonov was nervous that night, and it shows. He was 10x better at Carnegie Hall a few months later. The judges clearly showed him a lot of bias with a tremendously deep field.

No, he was supposed to start with Rach. That's what he chose to do and it was in the programme. But, as he was about to go on stage the announcer said he was going to play Tchaikovsky. This made the audience laugh and the announcer corrected his mistake. But it was all in Russian so it was all unclear. As far as Tianxu was concerned, he heard Tchaikovsky first, then Rachmaninov. The conductor, standing beside Tianxu, didn't help either as he just smiled and nodded his head. There was a seed of doubt planted in Tianxu's head. There was a seed of doubt in my head. I wasn't sure which they were going to play first. And unfortunately, neither did An Tianxu. There should have been a moment of clarity here. The poor guy is about to play in the final of arguably the biggest piano competition in the world and his nerves and adrenaline must already be sky high. The conductor or one of the people in the wing should've confirmed that the announcer made a mistake and that it's Rach first. Hopefully, this incident will provide a silver lining and actually help his career.
