An owner's thoughts on Lexus' touch pad steering wheel controls!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hey everyone! After my last video I got so many questions from you all about Lexus' new touch-based steering wheel controls that come on 22+ and 23+ NX and RX models. Do I like them? Do I dislike them? What makes them great? So here's an in-depth video talking all about it.

That’s interesting. I’ll have to do some digging around. I did a lot of software consulting work for Toyota many years ago and a number of my old colleagues now work for the Toyota Connected group at HQ in Plano and they’re constantly hiring for the teams that own the software platform that the new system is running on so I’m surprised there haven’t been more updates than that.

Yes! Having them in the HUD definitely makes it easier to live with. Still doesn’t fully replace buttons (which I really wish would come back) but at least having them on the wheel means you don’t have to deal with the touch screen all the time.

@@joshjamescars Thanks for your reply. I guess you still may have to cycle through the panels on the HUD if you need to access a different function, then have to cycle back to the fan speed panel. That might become easier through muscle memory, I suppose. Still nice to know there is an option other than using the touch screen. Thanks for getting into these details in your videos! Yes! Same 2.5L A25A “dynamic force” engine and hybrid drive system. The Highlander just got it earlier than the RX hybrid which carried on with the V6 until 2022. That’s part of why I personally feel like the RX isn’t worth the cost premium since I found the material quality and features to be about the same as a Highlander Limited/Platinum.

Thanks for the review. I picked-up a 2023 RX 350 three weeks ago. This is our fifth RX. We had two NX's in the past. I honestly tried living with the HUD and spent hours customizing it. I find it distracting and turned it off. I am 69 yrs old which may account for the decision. I loved the previous RX models for many reasons and have some reservations about the new NX and RX display screen and touch pad steering wheel controls. I miss the earlier model RX350 and NX Adaptive Cruise feature. On the earlier models it was on the steering column stem, rather then on the steering wheel with light touch buttons. A big issue for me is that I enjoyed switching drive modes from ECO to Sport with a dial on the older RX models. That's gone. I attempted to program drive modes using the HUD, but again found driving and seeing the HUD very distracting. I do like the four cylinder Turbo- but now have to pay for premium gas. I miss the buttons on the controls. You're young and probably adapt to change much quicker. Although, I am complaining, I will remain loyal to Lexus and happy to see younger people like yourself driving a Lexus. Good Luck to your You Tube channel and drive safe.

I was chuckling to myself throughout your comment because although we’re different in age there are a lot of similarities. This is my 9th Toyota/Lexus car but I think I’m done with Toyota/Lexus after this NX. I haven’t had 5 RXs but most of the Toyotas I’ve had were probably like your RXs in that they had Toyota’s absolutely amazing V6s. Both 3.5 and the 4.0L that’s in my 4Runner. Now that they’ve gone to all 4-cylinder turbo or hybrids I’m done with them. I’m sure they’re reliable but if I have to buy a turbo-4 I’m going German. And with the new 4Runner and GX likely going to turbo engines too, I’ll be keeping my naturally aspirated 4.0 4Runner for the rest of my life. As for the sport and eco modes I didn’t realize that wasn’t a dial! It is still a dial in the center console on my NX. I wonder why they’d change that for the RX. I don’t know if it’s possible (probably not) bht the base RX and NX still come with the normal buttons; you might ask the dealer if they can be swapped in. Again, I’m doubtful but doesn’t hurt to ask. Or, if you decide to trade this one in, and you were okay with the base model, you could do that and you’d get the hard, dedicated function buttons back too.

Get someone to set it up for you and done. Then it can behave like old one (if you map buttons to mimic old one). Cars get more functionality, so you need more buttons which can lead to crazy number of buttons (it was already quite messy with old system). New design is quite cool and allows everyone to have their own setup and map buttons which they really use. Old setup was far from perfect and I bet you some swear at it. You get use to it after some time (As you had no choice), but with this design instead of adjusting to fixed layout you create one which suits you. You get more functionality with less buttons. You just need few weeks to get use to it as with any new car/feature.

I will definitely add that one to the list! But so you aren’t waiting on me, I’ll tell you now that Toyota/Lexus safety sense 3.0 is SO good. TSS/LSS 2.5 was already really good at keeping the car centered in the lane and handling complex curves and lanes too but 3.0 is far more nuanced when it comes to following distance. It allows for more variation and makes the transition between lead vehicles far more natural feeling. It drives more like a human does rather than a lot of systems that can be jerky when someone cuts in front of you. I’ve been super impressed by it.

Can you access these shortcuts with one click or press?… need to skip tracks, adjust cruise control speed, etc with one press, not two or more. I ask because the videos show at least two presses and referencing the HUD or gauge cluster to do anything… but if you can press once, without having to look at the displays, then this sounds like a major win Thanks!

It all depends on how you decide to set it up. I’d recommend going to a Lexus dealer and playing around with a demo unit. The other thing is, once you build up muscle memory it’ll become second nature and you’ll have memorized what you set up for everything. You’ll also always see what you’re touching on the HUD as well. And, if you decide you don’t like the new system, you can get an NX or RX without a HUD and it’ll have traditional single-function hard buttons which I think is great that Lexus kept the standard controls around because this new setup definitely won’t be for everyone.

  • @joshjamescars

Depending on which model you have, that does sound right. Pressing the brake cancels the adaptive cruise. Set/Resume only works if the car has brought itself to a shop. The new NX and RX with these steering wheel controls is a one-press to activate but other Lexus models with LSS 2.0 or 2.5 do require that you activate it again each time you cancel it out.

Hello again! Not all NXs are equipped with a HUD. Look up at the top of the dash and see if there’s a big hole in front of the steering wheel. Or, if you have the controls like are shown in the video, then go into the vehicle settings (the gear icon on the left rail) and the toggle to turn it on should be in there under vehicle settings or one of the other menus. If you have the standard buttons (where each one is dedicated to a specific function) then the car doesn’t have a HUD.

  • @joshjamescars

Short answer is you can’t, LOL. The only way a head up display works is by projecting an image on the glass which is cancelled out by polarized lenses. Until a screen can be integrated into the windshield glass (which would be a nightmare for a repairability) that’s how they’ll work. So, if you want to use your HUD, you buy a pair of non-polarized sunglasses. Simple as that.
