As I understand it, Dino's take hold when the conditions for micro algae growth is unfavourable. When nitrate and phosphate bottom out algae growth is inhibited opening the door for Dino's to take over that niche

I got you. That's the thinking nowadays, but why do people still get dinos when nutrients are not zero. That does happen. Also, how can mature tanks run very low nutrients and not get dinos? It doesn't necessarily have to do with nutrients. It's more tank immaturity rather than zero nutrients is my argument. And also, the collective reefing community came to that conclusion because we measure zero nutrients before seeing dinos, but I also argue in this video that nobody has considered that it's the dinos that have driven the nutrients to zero. They are already there and that's why the nutrients are zero. We just don't see them yet. Anyway, the bigger picture is I don't think we are on the right track with our thinking since we're still bad at preventing them.

@@CoralEuphoria I'm going to have to agree, I have a 25 gallon system, about 1 year old at this point. I had a slight "crash" everything is still recovering at the moment. Regardless I have a fairly stable biological filteration setup, I've been struggling with low nutrients since day one, my acros seems to co some it all before my fish can produce more from poop. I currently only have one fish and that could be my problem, however ibe never had dinos....ever. At best I'm at .01 phosphate and 0-1 nitrate on a good day.

No wait, i have a young system (9 months at time for dinos) but my dinos was only in my sump. I had zero phosphate but once i started dosing some it went away. What do you mean with dinos being there but we dont see them yet? But yes i agree to your idea here….. also when i got dinos i turned down light intensity some so it could be that it helped aswell. Thanks for a great video!

@@jonasbergkvist1464 my beat guess is that when you started dosing phosphate, some sort of algea used that as fuel and outcompeted the dinos, this is a fragile topic apparently 😂 so many variables and "what ifs" and "except's"

​@@CoralEuphoria I'm going through a dino explosion right now on a 600 gallon that had 80+ ppm NO3 and 2+ ppm PO4. After a week or two of the dinos, my nitrates are down to 20 ppm and my pH is up .1 to 8.3! I had been looking for a way to lower my nutrients for years now (I don't have many corals and heavily feed my fish) and it looks like dinos have been my solution lmao. (Water changes are too difficult on such a large system.) I believe I upset the biological balance of my tank dosing lots of vibrant back before it came out that it was an algaecide and the tank has very slowly been stabilizing.

Definitely the best reefing youtuber! Most of the other ones are driven by sponsors but Abe is driven by spreading knowledge without the need to showcase "new" products.

I saw Anthony Calfo present over a decade ago. He kept his greenhouse system with water changes. Patience and water changes. I’m a believer too.

On a more serious note - thanks for the fun vid Abe. Love the stop motion animation. I have a different hypothesis about why dino strive in low nutrient / unstable conditions; I think they essentially monopolize and outcompete other microorganisms. When resources in the water column (nutrients) are low, one can argue that organisms that are better adapted to surviving such conditions would have the upper hand. While Dino certainly do have nutrient limitations, they thresholds typically lower than many of the other algae’s found in our tank (this is why dosing things like vibrant kills GHA really quick but takes forever to deal with dinos). I think that adding nutrients in such cases can level the playing field a bit. Another way to day this is that nutrient poor environments are less stable and open to exploitation by a few parasitic species while nutrient rich environments allow more species to coexist without reaching plague proportions. Just a few thoughts to consider. Thanks again for the enjoyable vid! Cheers

Your theory makes sense. I’ve been in the hobby for almost two decades and the this latest obsession with No3/Po4 has me baffled. Literally according to the community, ANY problem you may have is caused by nutrients being too high or too low. Raising nutrients has become the recommended standard for battling/mitigating dinoflagellates, yet I have yet to see a reliable report that someone has been successful with raising nutrients alone. Any success stories out there are anecdotal at best. Love your content btw.

Great video. Great explanation of what it actually means to be patient in the hobby. I been in the hobby 20 years and it took me 15 years to realize that when something goes wrong in my tank it is a direct result of something that might have happened 2-3 weeks ago. What people need to do is document what is going on in your tank like a diary. Then when you see a change you can look back and see what changed.

As a hobbyist working on a setup currently to jump back in after a long hiatus and stressing about new methods with establishing dry rock filtration as as apposed to the old methods of live rock and the challenges of algae blooms in establishing a tank. This video was so refreshing and made a lot of sense thank you!

I’ve just had great success with the triton method in what apparently is one of the hardest systems to set up, a dry rock, bare bottom system. I have spent a lot of money on the right setup, ICP tests and after 10 months it’s looking good and getting good growth on most of the SPS and LPS corals I have.

Finally! Another of few who understands certain aspects of reef keeping! Yeah! 😃I will never raise nutrients to attempt to do anything in my reef tanks! This rush to get things back to normal is just impatience. And the funny thing about it is, in most cases the raising of nutrients to see observable difference takes the same length of time that doing almost nothing takes to eliminate dinoflagellates. The end result is you think it was raising nutrients that eliminated the problem, when in reality it was just time and balance to the reef.
