An old VHS tape reveals a creepy mystery

Case 280: The Stockton Arsonist
** Content warnings: Animal cruelty **
On a hot summer’s day in 1989, a father and son travelling through Stockton, California, discover a VHS tape left by the side of a road. When they take it home and decide to watch it, they make a disturbing discovery. The tape contains footage of a house burning to the ground and was apparently filmed by the arsonist who lit the fire.
When investigators looking into the tape hit a series of dead ends, they enlist the help of popular television series Unsolved Mysteries, and the case becomes known as that of the infamous Stockton Arsonist.

This tale was also on an old 90s episode of Unsolved Mysteries
Even when it was "just" damage to property, a terrifying case!
Who tf would sit down and watch a non labeled tape they found as a family??? Literally ANYTHING could have been on it...
@FrogsForBreakfast

But what is most likely to be on it? Home video of a barbeque or birthday party, local elementary performance, old episodes recorded off the TV, homemade porn, a husband recording his wife giving birth...

@@FrogsForBreakfast Considering the stuff they found with it, I wouldn´t have a family screening. I wouldn´t have wanted my kid to see homemade porn, or a stranger giving birth. You forgot to add animal torture, CP, human torture, etc. They are lucky it was just a creepy arson...
I remember this case. The footage of the arson was creepy, the guys laughing voice, it’s obvious he started that fire. Casefile never lets me down, my favorite crime podcast by far!
Imagine if we would’ve had smartphones back then. That vhs tape may have never been found by the dad and his son, assuming that it wasn’t left there to be found.
I love Casefile uploads early Saturday mornings. I remember this episode and I do miss Unsolved Mysteries.

Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack was the best. Grew up on that show in the 80s and 90s.
I grew up watching Unsolved Mysteries. I always loved it when they paused for an update on a case. Listening to you give one was pretty cool. It may be a good series. It's amazing the cases we remember when they're brought up.
Congrats on 100k subs! 🎊I remember seeing the arson video on Unsolved Mysteries as a kid. Creepy as hell.
Great Saturday morning once again. Thanks 🙏 to Casefile.
Time to settle in for a Saturday morning Casefile episode 😊
Thank you CaseFiles! oxox
I remember seeing when this case first aired on Unsolved Mysteries. Over the years my husband and I have used that voice when saying things as a joke. A private joke.

I remember watching an episode of this as a kid on Unsolved Mysteries. The way the person behind the camera was talking and bragging about the fire with his high voice creeped the hell out of me. Especially when he was saying "this is hell".

Me. I hate to see so many views and nowhere near the likes. I know out of all those views someone likes what they watched. I don't know if people forget or just don't hit the like button. But 😮for the channels sake, if you like the channel people should be a little more on top of things and don't forget to give it a like. KZread is always giving people a hard time so I do everything I can to help the channels I like .

I was on a true crime tour in Austin Texas this week. I (for the first time in my adult life) heard of a new case. The Servant Girl Annihilator would be excellent to cover! It predated Jack the Ripper by 3 years
