@@Methar39 Natalie has always had a delicate quality to her voice and the French language is similarly delicate - lots of subtlety in the pronunciation. As an example, it's considered one of the trickiest languages to spell or do text to speech for because it has just a ton of silent letters all over the place. Also, while I do say it's delicate, it's not fragile.

As a matter of fact, french is way easier than english to spell according to a said word because there is very few interprétation possible. The other way around it Also true, While Reading a french word, you will pronounce it correctly easily While in english most of the Time you need context to pronounce it (to read vs i read Yesterday, or an increase and to increase where you are supposed to move the stress) Once the rules of letter associations mastered, which Indeed implyes lot of sounds (ou, in, ain, ein, oei, eu, en, an etc...) It is easy to read french and to write it :-)

@@vitofee It's definitely very consistent with it's spelling rules, but when you have to interpret how something that's said is spelled, that gets trickier. Especially among non-natives. English tends to be tricky in the tenses for non-natives, but spelling isn't as big a deal because the inconsistency makes it so people don't rely as much on spelling via the sounds, and memorization becomes the main way you learn. Languages all have their own funny quirks - like how with French there's a department in the government that actively works against slang or foreign terms working their way into the language. That's a big reason why the spelling tends to be consistent, but also why there are some odd terms for more modern things when their names are translated literally. Everything has to be represented by an older vocabulary.

Elle à fait sa scolarité (en partie du moins) en France et en Belgique... D'ou le "non-accent"...

This has been one of my favorite French songs for a while. The chorus melody gets stuck in my head on repeat. Technically, it’s kinda weird for a woman to be singing it... Since the song was written by a man, it’s linguistically odd coming from a woman because the words’ genders are all off (“beau” instead of “belle” for example). The lyrics are also very masculine, since the song is essentially about being “whipped” (figuratively speaking). Anyhoo, singing from the masculine perspective made me think about how deeply the idea of “gender” is ingrained in romance languages. THEN I remembered that nouns can be feminine, masculine or neuter in German. I am rambling. But my point is that different cultures deal with gender differently, and it’s interesting to think about how language shapes those ideas.

Nathalie Dawn she spent her childhood in Europe and attended schools in France and Belgium before she returned to the United States. It's normal that she has no accent. Im pretty sure that she speaks fluently french like you.

J'ai entendu cette chanson chantée par Nataly Dawn hier sur une station de de type "jazz lounge". Je suis immédiatement tombé sous le charme de cette chanteuse et de son groupe "Pomplamoose". Une chose est certaine c'est qu'elle sera désormais partie de ma playlist préférée. Bravo à Pomplamoose et à Nataly, je leur souhaite une belle et longue carrière.

I'm usually quite a "purist" when it comes to Brassens. There are a few cover albums by various French artists, and so far I haven't been really convinced. But I must say this cover really took me by surprise. The whole instrumentation, the harmonies, and the flawless pronunciation of the lead singer... It's perfect! Keep it up guys!

*une fine mouche* is a person that is wise and cunning. *dents de lait* French use to call "dents de lait" the very first teeth every human gets, these first teeth will be replaced around 6/9 years old by the definitive ones. *"menotte* is a little hand, a baby's hand for example, or the hand of a child. There's a pleasant, affectionate meaning with this word. *quenotte* is a local idiom for "tooth", it's like "menotte", a pleasant and affectionate term for "young tooth" or "little tooth". *dit sans malice* means that these mages have "spoken without a lie"

Having spent much of her childhood over there helps a bunch. In fact, I detect a sweet accent when she sings in English.

J'habite à Sète, la ville natale de celui que l'on nomme ici "l'Ami Georges". Bien sûr, ses chansons sont souvent interprétées dans ma ville, et je trouve cette interprétation magnifique, avec une voix très agréable et un grand soin apporté à la prononciation. De même, je trouve que l'accompagnement musical est en accord avec le texte. J'ai pris du plaisir, bravo les artistes et merci !

Je suis entièrement d'accord. Je suis un très grand fan de Brassens et c'est la première fois que j'écoute une interprétation de ce niveau tant sur le plan musical, parce que les musiciens ici sont vraiment bons, que sur le plan de la voix. J'ai jamais entendu une personne anglo-saxonne avec prononciation du français aussi irréprochable. Si on ne savait pas qu'elle est américaine on croirait entendre une française. Je pense qu'elle doit avoir l'oreille absolue.

Le chant développe peut-être une plasticité au niveau des aires et des connexions cérébrales ? Il faudrait demander à un linguiste ou un expert en neurosciences. Peut-être a-t'elle tout simplement séjourné dans un pays francophone ou née d'un couple mixte ? En fait, la réponse se trouve un peu plus bas dans ce fil de discussion : "I lived in France and Belgium from ages 10 to 18. Used to not have an accent, but I'm a bit rusty now that it's been over a decade since I lived there."

@@acrobatedelacanopee8161 elle n'a pas du tout l'accent belge. Je reste sur mon hypothèse de l'oreille absolue parce que les chinois qui utilisent une langue tonale ont de meilleures aptitudes musicales. Donc oui il y a une liaison entre le chant ou la musique en général et la capacité à adopter la phonologie d'une langue. Mais le travail ne suffit pas elle doit vraiment avoir l'oreille absolue parce que si tu regardes Jane Birkin par exemple, c'est une chanteuse, elle a vécu des décennies en France et elle a toujours gardé son accent anglais. Il ne suffit pas de vivre dans un pays pour acquérir la langue, il y a un effort à fournir.

@@Linguages2024 Effectivement, son immersion en pays francophone n'explique pas tout, il a a sûrement un don musical et beaucoup de travail ! Et le fait de chanter doit contribuer pour l'accent, si l'on compare la prononciation impeccable du français de Barbara Hendricks avec celle de Jane Birkin, effectivement, ou de Woody Allen.

for "menottes", insist on the m (m like in many, more) for "quenottes" (little teeth) insist on the "k" like in Kate, carry, and for "ailleurs" it's the same prononciation as "liar" but without the "l" - Well I do what I can.

I am not French but I attempted learning this beautiful language for a while. Hers sounds very authentic and clear. Like listening to Cafe Creme recordings.

Recently discovered this band and I love their French songs! I love the passion and fun they have and especially the drummer who plays in French!!🤭😃

Guys this is just great! Cristal clear voice, green eyes and smooth orchestration. Goose bumps from beginning to end. Last week we sang two Brassens songs with neighbours in the street in front of our houses, as a sign of solidarity for health workers and other people on the Corona frontline. In the following days, "Les copains d'abord" made endless loops in my head. Thus, yesterday evening I decided to listen to some more songs online and landed on this video. Since, I must have listened to it at least 10 times. You must know that for some of us french speakers in France and Switzerland, Brassens is in the pantheon of musical poetry and has a very dear place in our hearts. Thanks and keep going!

Your interpretation is too literal, you're not considering context and colloquialisms. Qu'on se pende ici ou qu'on se pende ailleurs, s'il faut se pendre is used here in the sense of getting married. In French, a colloquial way of saying a man is getting married is to say that he put a rope (or better yet, a noose) around his neck ("il s'est mis la corde au cou"). The drummer's reaction is perfectly apropos.
