SYNOPSIS:
After moving to Sunnydale, California, Buffy Anne Summers just wants to be a normal teenager. Back in Los Angeles, her first Watcher had died; she inadvertently burned down the gymnasium at her old high school; and her parents got a divorce. The move to Sunnydale is supposed to give both her and her mother, Joyce, a clean slate. But then she meets the school librarian, Rupert Giles, and quickly learns there is no escaping her destiny. With Giles as her new Watcher, she reluctantly steps back into her role as the Slayer. But this time she is not fighting alone. She now has an inner circle of special friends-- Willow, Xander, Cordelia, and a mysterious young man named Angel-- ready to join the fight and drive in a stake or two if need be.
When an invisible menace starts attacking students and faculty at Sunnydale High, the Scooby Gang traces the problem back to Cordelia.

Cordelia has been the "It Girl" her whole life...just like Buffy was. That was the only thing anyone ever saw, and just like Marcie that's what she became. She's smart and perceptive enough to realize that and what it means...but she's still a 16 year old girl. Buffy lost all that when she was Called as The Slayer. From Queen Bee to Isolated Freak (who places everyone around her at risk)overnight. She hoped to reclaim some part of that at Sunnydale. Alas. In addition to drawing to it the minions of Hell, the Hellmouth acts to amplify and concentrate evil and bad intent. If a bad thing can possibly happen, it just becomes far more likely there.

The text on the page that Marcie opens in her assassination class are the lyrics to a Beatles song.

Enjoyed your reactions and thoughts. This episode was designed for us at the time. ( us being 14-29 years old). The first year dealt with establishing the central characters and making the episodes on subjects and events that were relevant at the time. Season 1 is different than the other 6 years because of behind the scene actions and the need to connect first with the targeted audience. It did and became a smash. BTVS will start to be told like an epic novel over time with plots, development, and ideas started without notice and played out not only many episode later but seasons and years ahead. There will be some behind the scenes drama that impact Season 2 but that’s for later. I appreciate the perspective you share and hope that you enjoy the final episode of Season 1.

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE SERIES - HAVING MORE TO DO WITH THEME AND CHARACTER GROWTH THAN PLOT - BUT STILL MAJOR IN THE LONG RUN. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. I love that the start of Cordelia's character growth is in the long run Buffy's overall issue in general: Loneliness (even when not alone).

I loved your discussion about Cordelia! I basically agree with you, I don't think people change much (in real life anyway). I can't wait till you get to the next season, when your questions will be answered.

I think a common theme in "invisible person" stories is what would you do if no one could see what you were doing? Would ethics and morality fly out the window? The fact that invisible Marcie has no qualms about committing murder begs the question of whether she was murderous BEFORE turning invisible? Or does invisibility - or lack of human contact/interaction - drive a person crazy? (and, of course, in Marcie's case her lack of human interaction began before she actually turned invisible.)

The school for invisible assassins is such a fun idea, but unfortunately just like the mantis eggs from the end of episode 4, it never comes up again, sad to say

SPOILERS . . . . . . it is unfortunate that we never see riley assigned as a handler for an invisible assassin.

7:24 I always wonder how the stunt team pulls off shots like this of people tumbling down a flight of stairs. I guess the stunt double just wears padding under her costume, although it doesn't look very thick. But what about her head? One wrong move and she cracks her head against one of those concrete steps.

there are whole youtube videos on this topic. long story short -- there's padding, there's technique, and it hurts anyway.

Regarding "The Three" - Buffy didn't "kill them in like 2 minutes", you are totally misremembering that from the middle of the season. What actually happened: They attacked Buffy, but with Angel's help they managed to escape the three vampires. Angel was injured. Buffy brought Angel into her house. The Three returned to the Master to report their failure and offer their lives. Darla killed them for the Master. They had Buffy worried and she plus Angel ran away - that's like the opposite of killing them in two minutes! Regarding the Master - he doesn't do much himself, because as was established in the first two episodes, and one of you remembered, he is literally trapped by a mystical barrier of some kind in that buried ruins of a church... He cannot do anything himself because he cannot actually leave; he was only outside in Nightmares because him being free was one of Buffy"s fears.
