    @the DM Lair its really worth reading up on 5e story in Forgotten Realms. It hinges on The Second Sundering, an event tied to the first sundering tens of thousands of years in the past (when the elves created evermeet) and it's essentially a well written story way to retcon all the spell plague crap from 4e. Old gods: the Dark Seldarine, Bane, Bahl,and Mykul are alive again (among others) seriously, worth checking out

    @@theDMLair well the novel series "The Second Sundering" is a 6 book series by a variety of authors. Ed Greenwood, RA Salvatore, and Erin Evans each did one, and its the events of the second sundering leading up to 5e. There's also a couple of good KZread channels that cover an overview: Forgotten Realms explained and Forgotten Realms History. 5e retcons back to where all the old 1st & 2nd ed maps are once again valid. So that massive 10 map set of Waterdeep from "The City System", is once again valid for Waterdeep: Dragon Heist! Just found your channel yesterday and already live your content. Got a lot to catch up on.

    There's a whole book series about it!?! Wow, I got some reading to do. (I love FR novels. Salvatore's "Drizzt" series is what go me into D&D back when I was in middle school...) I have all those maps from 2e Waterdeep: City of Splendors and City System, too. They are what I use all the time with my groups. Three of my current campaigns all take place in Waterdeep or the surrounding area. Glad you're enjoying the videos! 😃👊

    I didn't even know Ravnica was a location from Magic the Gathering, I just found the guide and thought the location sounded cool. For me, the changing plot from MtG won't affect me as much, since I care less about the ongoing canon and more about the fact that it seems like a cool setting.

    The Mending was about 60-65 years ago, in universe; so before when most of our current main characters were born, but not so far back that the old characters can't make an appearance. Nicol Bolas is about 25,000 years old, and he's a "behind the scenes schemer" type villain by default, but a grossly OP dragon mage if he ever feels like getting directly involved (his CR would definitely be in the 30 or 30+ range). Nice video! Looking forward to the next one!

    39:00 it should be noted just how far apart the profits from MtG are from D&D. It doesn't matter how many special release variant covers of hardback books they release. They'll never make more money off books than the sales they make off booster pack sales at every Target and Walmart in the country. Think of how many kids walk through those stores every day. Even if only a faction of a percent of all the children grocery shopping with their parents can convince their parents to add a single booster pack to the shopping cart at checkout, that still translates to a minimum of millions of sales a day.

    Having planeswalkers as NPC’s/BBEG’s sounds awesome! It’s like including Vecna or Accerrakk (spelling?) in the Forgotten Realms, both enemies who come from different settings. Or having Mordenkainen, a character also from a different setting, show up for a session or two. Definitely sounds like high level-of-play stuff but still awesome!

    I like the idea of Magic and D&D crossing over. I looked at the book in the bookstore. It was really cool. I like this because it expands the world and opens up new scenarios. There is a fertile sandbox to get creative and rolplay into. It would be fun. I didn't think of this as a cash grab. Maybe I am not cynical enough. I did notice the book had no color pie diagram. I found that odd. I think the color system of Magic can mix with the class system of D&D. This mix would be a creative spin. Classes have been done a lot in RPGs. I think D&D started the trend. Mixing in the color pie can breathe new life into a class system. The guilds of Ravnica represent the ten combinations of two colors. I figured that they in turn can have a class strongly associated with them. Many of the people in a class belong in the same guild. Here is how it goes down. The Gruul guild is a mix of red and green. It is about people viciously attacking the city. They disdain try to turn Ravnica into a wilderness. They do not like to do magic, and prefer brute force. The fitting class is hunter. The Golgari guild is a mix of green and black. It is a guild based on using rot and decay to gain power. They use death to fuel life. The use of life and new growth reminds me of nature. The journey into death and underworld reminds me of a spirit vision. So the fitting class is shaman. The Rakdos guild is a mix of black and red. It is about hedonism and entertainment. There are devils and entertainers. The demonic part really shows. So the fitting class is warlock. The Izzit guild is a mix of red and blue. There is a lot of creativity and innovation. One gains knowlage through radical expirimentation and learning. So the fitting class is sorcerer. The Dimir guild is a mix of blue and black. It does a lot of sneaking around. There is spys and information gathering. So the fitting class is rogue. The Orzhov guild is a mix of black and white. It uses religion to get the money out of the poulation. There is running like organized crime and a bank. A regigous figure would work here. There is more of a threat to the other players. So the fitting class is a monk. The Azorious guild is a mix of white and blue. It is about keeping detailes laws and making order. There is a sence of holy influince. So the class is priest. The Simic guild is a mix of blue and green. It is about using science to further the growth and evolution of nature. There is a lot of intellect going on. It isn't quite as fast as Izzit. So the fitting clas is mage. The Selesnya guild is a mix of green amd white. It is about bulding cummunity and taking care of nature. There are is a sense of nature. There is also a sense of authority as well. So the fitting class is druid. Boros is a mix of white and red. There is a lot of military and amry. There is a fight to do the right thing. The fitting class is warrior.

    The main takeaway from the Ravnica book is it's probably the best Planescape book we'll get in 5e. The setting is a massive planet spanning city where day to day life for almost everyone revolves around ten guilds. Call them the ten guilds of Ravnica or the ten factions of Sigil. It doesn't matter. More than half of the book is an expansion on the faction and renown rules found in the dmg. Each guild is given its own background, renown progression and rewards, headquarters maps, and multiple tables detailing how the guilds interact and how their members might combat each other. Plus the monster manual in the back of the book is full of unique monsters with great new abilities.

    According to the lore espoused in GGR, the guilds were around 10,000 years before the Living Guildpact came around.

  • @CitanulsPumpkin

    @CitanulsPumpkin

    Ай бұрын

    The living guild pact and the guildpact are two different things. The guildpact was a magic effect that made the vast majority of people on the plane obey the rules laid out by the guilds and prevented the guilds from openly going to war with each other. The Guildpact also cut Ravnica off from the rest of the multiverse by preventing planar travel to and from the plane. The first Ravnica novel/card set took place during the ten thousandth anniversary of the founding of the guildpact by the first leaders of the ten guilds. That story followed a Boros detective investigating a series of crimes that culminated in him arresting the vampire founder of the Dimir guild on stage during the celebration. That act destroyed the guildpact. The second story arc set on Ravnica followed the post Mending Planeswalkers as they rediscovered Ravnica. The guilds were on the brink of all out war until someone set up a competition. Each guild picked a champion to send into the "Dragon Maze" and basically do a Hunger Games/Running Man style race through the city. The winner of which got to rule the world. The knockoff hunger Games resulted in Jace Beleren, a mono blue Planeswalker and psychic prick, becoming the Living Guildpact. The Living Guildpact prevents the guilds from going yo ear with each other, so long as he is on Ravnica. The third Ravnica story arc again begins with the guilds on the brink of all-out war. Jace has been missing for months. Five of the ten guild masters have been killed or deposed and replaced with Planeswalkers. Half of the new guild master Planeswalkers were minions of the Elder Dragon Nicol Bolas. The others were being manipulated without knowing it. One of the killed guild masters was Niv Mizzet. Jace returns to Ravnica after months of amnesia and being a psychic prick and calls his allies the Gatewatch to assemble for a meeting. Nicol Bolas planeswalks into the capital as his minions set off three doomsday device artifacts on Ravnica. A giant Ziggurat appears in the middle of Ravnica's equivalent of the Washington Mall with Bolas perched atop it. In the main market district for Ravnica's capital, a portal opens. Out of that portal, an army of tens of thousands of lapis lazuli coated death knights marches from the Ancient Egypt themed plane of Amonkhet into the streets of Ravnica. A planar beacon draws thousands of planeswalkers to Ravnica. A giant golden glowing Azorius symbol floating above the Azorius Senate building prevents all planeswalkers from leaving Ravnica. The War of the Spark happens. Go watch the trailer. During the war, Niv Mizzet is resurrected as the new Living Guildpact. After the war ends and Bolas has been slain, most of the planeswalker guild masters step down. The ones who knowingly served Bolas are either dead or on the run. The ghost slaying soul knife planeswalker who killed the ghost mob bosses running the Orzhov Syndicate gets a pass because she ordered her guild to fight the undead hoard during the war, and her guild said no. Let that sink in. Bolas had no control over the Orzhov, and they still sat out the war and let his army run rampant because they're easily the most evil guild. Then, a few years later, the New Phyrexians opened up portals all over the multiverse and invaded every plane. When New Phyrexia is destroyed the portals are left open, but their destinations are randomized. Making Ravnica the MtG equivalent of Sigil. A massive planar mega city dotted with portals connecting to the rest of the multiverse. There's a reason they glossed over the MtG lore in the book.

    Each color aligns with a philosophy. Like it was mentioned in the video. Unfortunately because it is designed as a game, some parts of the philosophy of each color is lost and never represented in the cards, or rarely ever make an appearance. White: Color of law, order, the good greater than all of us. It is about self sacrifice, working together to overcome great odds. It is the color that brings life and inspires sacrifice. It is also the color that swallows the individual, more concerned about the good of the masses than the freedoms of the individual. White will make your life peacefully, ordered and safe, but will ask you to sacrifice almost everything you have. Some willingly give, such is the fate of many heroes, some have theirs taken forcibly. Green: Color of community, nature and survival. It is about knowing your place in the world and working towards that goal. Like an ascetic, green isolates itself in communities that know what they must do, and follow their place. It is a caste system with emphasis on fitting your role. As the color of nature and fitting roles it also encompasses the idea that only the strongest or fittest survive. You use what your are given to love and climb. If you can't climb anymore such is your role in this world. It shuns unnatural means of progression, technology makes those unfit capable of doing things they would have never done, changing the perfect balance of thousands of years of fine tunning. Green will bash your technology, and throw you into the tiger's den. If you survive, you deserved it, if you don't you deserved it. Red: color of passion, chaos and freedom. It was empathy that pushed mankind to help each other and it was chaos what gave them the opportunity. Mainly caring about itself and those it emotionally connects to, red does what it wants. Rule are but restrictions that stifle creativity and order is a bunch of rule. Here you do what you want because you can. From helping a friend fight against an I just system to pillaging a village because it seems fun. Red cares not about consequence. The creativity it encompasses is underrepresented in the cards. Goblins in Magic always make things work, even if it takes a decade and fifteen generations to do so. Black: Color of ambition, selfishness and winning at all costs. Afterall, even if you are profusely bleeding, your soul is owned by a devil and your entire family is dead, the last man standing always has the last laugh, and if the entire planed is destroyed you will always be the last man standing. And like the planet that devil is a problem than can be solved with enough sacrifice, determination and means. If you willingly put the effort, you always get the rewards. Blue: the color of knowledge, mastery, meticulousness and innovation. It a color that will look for a way to do something better and then look for a better way to do it. What's the point of being able to level buildings if you have no idea how someone can stop you? What you don't know can kill you so why are living an ignorant life? Sure a strong human can lift a boulder but a smart man can build a machine that will lift ten. Knowledge is the engine that makes progress go around and knowledge requires experimentation. So sit on this chair while I look how your brain reacts to pain so I can better my interrogation methods. Corpses are but material for more servants afterall, and how you going to light that bomb when fire can't burn without air? What damage your gun is going to do when all the bullets have salt instead of gunpowder? What is the point of hitting hard when metal does a better job at crushing my enemies?
