An Introduction to La traviata (The Royal Opera)
Ойын-сауық
‘A toast to the pleasures of life!’ - so sings Violetta, her new admirer Alfredo and her party guests in the opening scene of Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata. Find out more: www.roh.org.uk/productions/la-...
But beneath the surface glamour of Violetta’s Parisian life run darker undercurrents: her doomed love for Alfredo and the tensions the lovers encounter when they break society’s conventions. La traviata, based on Alexandre Dumas fils’s play La Dame aux camélias, is one of Verdi’s most popular operas, combining drama, profound emotion and wonderful melodies.
Richard Eyre’s classic production conveys the indulgent social whirl of 19th-century Paris. It provides a vivid setting for Verdi’s tuneful score, which includes such favourites as Violetta’s introspective ‘Ah fors’è lui’ and ecstatic ‘Sempre libera’; the duet ‘Pura siccome un angelo’ as Giorgio Germont begs Violetta to leave Alfredo; and ‘Parigi, o cara’, in which the lovers poignantly imagine a life that will never be theirs.
The role of Violetta (the ‘fallen woman’ of the title) is one of Verdi’s most complex and enduring characters.

This is my most favourite opera of all. I can't even count how many times I've seen this (different productions). My most favourite production was in Tel Aviv in the 80's. The whole production was in black and white (all the costumes and stage setting). It was very effective.
It has taken me years to find La Traviata, I was first introduced to it when I was a kid via a manga called W Juliet but there was a problem with the translation and I never learned the name and my sister has trash memory and all the volumes so an obscure side story was not her top priority. I'm really happy to have found it after a decade.

Oh dear I'm too late. The book Camille was written by the illegitimate son of Alexandre Dumas (Three Musketeers etc). Alexandre Dumas, interestingly had a father who was black, was one of the greatest romantic(?) novelists of the 19th century. His son was also an author. Alexander Dumas Fils He (the son) had an affair with a Parisian prostitute known as Marie Duplessis. She died of TB at the age of 23 in 1847. Very sad. Everything she owned was sent to auction to pay her debts, including her pet parrot! She was thought of as big hearted and a martyr, sacrificing her own happiness to protect her lover, which was unusual for a woman in her class/profession at the time. In fact it was a new way of thinking about women. (This was made clear in the novel Camille, written after her death. La Traviata is based on Camille. Written by Giussepi Verdi (Joe Green) as the whole Camille thing was very popular at the time. And beautiful it is too. I hope your report went well ))

Thank you for replying, I think that shows how very nice you are. I made a factual mistake about Dumas. I got mixed up. His paternal grandparents were Marie Cessete Dumas (a Haitian slave) and Marquis Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie. (early photos of Dumas are on the internet c. 1845)
What about revenge?
Gimadieva, Pirgu e Salsi hanno il fisico giusto per i loro personaggi !
Violetta is a courtesan just like satine
Whats with this? Gorgeous set, beautiful period costumes, but nobody thought to do their hair?

Nathan Davis they took these from stage rehearsals so the hair isn’t what it would look like during the actual performance!
If this is their HOMEworld, what if it was just their first attempt at harvesting its resources?
The only Traviata i know, accept and love is Angela Gheorghiu!!
