An Interview with the CHAMPS! (587 The Hedgehogs)

Ғылым және технология

This past spring I attended the FRC North Carolina State Championships and got to talk to a bunch of the teams. If you've never heard of FIRST Robotics, you're in for a real treat, because this competition is AWESOME. (If you haven't seen the hub video for all these interviews, check it out first! • The annual engineering... )
These teams, thousands of them, have only about 2 months to design, build, and test robots to play a brand new game before the competitions begin, and then their work is put to the test! It would be a lot for any professional engineer, but these kids are still in high school! It's pretty incredible.
This video is the complete pit interview with FIRST Team 587. Enjoy!

If you're interested in finding a team or attending an event, here's the official team search from FIRST:

And if you want to know more about any specific team (like a link to their website) you can probably find it on Blue Alliance:

This is a world map that shows events and teams. I'm not sure how accurate it is because it doesn't look official, but it's a lot easier to search by eye! (and it also doesn't include the other FIRST programs like FLL and FTC (FRC was featured in the video))

These high school teams and the robots that they’ve created are incredibly impressive. I can honestly say I’ve interacted with less impressive peers during my undergraduate ME studies at university. I wish nothing but the best for these kids

Having that creative outlet to hone their skills will help them go far.

Kudos to them! This competition is really cool, and it's even more impressive that these results come from high schoolers. They'll definitely go far.

I was part of a team that competed in FIRST 25+ years ago. It was one of my first experiences working toward a common goal with a group of people without much structure. It was fun the first year, chaos the second year. I guess what I take away from it in hindsight is the importance of leadership and vision. With nearly the same talent level, infrastructure and budget, the capability of each year's team was incomparable. One year that team was without peer, the next year the team couldn't find their way out of a paper bag. Learning experience.

Wow that is some smooth climbing, they weren't kidding when they said the robot doesn't swing like the others!

I'm really enjoying this series. Seriously wish I went to something like this as a kid.

This climbing mechanism is the only one I have seen that use two bars during the whole liftin phase, and not just when transitioning from bar to bar. Very stable.

I know this is about the engineering of the robots but I just want say that FIRST is truly so much more that just robots there are teams that do some really incredible stuff for and with their community and are truly helping with inspiring kids and showing them that not only STEM is incredible awesome and that it's really for everyone. Also for more content like these videos about first you should really look up First Updates Now channel behind the bumpers series.

2:24... What I don't see is how they get the robot back on the ground after climbing to the highest rung.

They will just pick it up and put it on the ground. After the match the robots automatically turn off for safety reasons so stuff is moved off of the field manually

@@justinflaherty1784 Thanks for the explanation... I wasn't sure if the robots lowered themselves.

I wish KZread would fix them but I fear it inflates interactions that could give KZread more money making opportunities
