While gear is cool, and gear is fun (really fucking fun!), and gear will make things go faster, it won't make you a better storyteller. The thing that makes your channel so awesome is the way you storytell, the way you explain, and how relatable you are.

I’m thinking of getting Elgato stuff (starting with lights) to not spend time twiddling and optimising.

There is two things i do love with your channel, one is the mix of topics like these, i know youtube is a bit tricky if you go to far off topic and that is to bad because i did like it when you could mix in like hot souse things in the earlier days. The second thing is your honesty and straight forwardness, i never ever feel like you do something just for clickbait or because it is a big hype, you never oversell something that does not deserve it. you have a "home, calm, familiar" touch to everything that makes it less cold and "robotic". and that is relaxing in the jungle of channels out there.

I'm so jealous of how automated you have everything. You can tell how much thought went into it - awesome setup, loved watching it!

Tom demonstrates that it's possible to become a successful content creator without relying on a large team of workers, helpers, co-workers, or employees compared to other channels. This video is excellent, and it reinforces my belief that you don't require a major corporation with numerous employees to manage a successful channel. Tom can genuinely compete with larger channels where many people collaborate. His content is outstanding and professional, and his reviews are both clear and authentic. I'm truly impressed and enjoy it. I've come across numerous channels covering similar topics, particularly in the realm of software and hardware, but they tend to over-complicate things, and the results don't even compare to what I've seen on this channel.

Love the old school pencil sharpener on the wall by the server rack.

I really dig that philosophy you have around treating these videos like an offline stream basically and trimming off the silent bits, sure the editing won't be as good as hiring a dedicated video editor but for your type of content having such a streamlined process for showing off things on a computer screen and such really makes your videos comprehensible.

Thanks, and I am not really a big fan of the popular styles I see on KZread. Tons of quick cuts to multiple camera angles along with LOTS AND LOTS of generic stock footage. I just don't think that makes for a better learning experience.

Awesome setup. So you don't use Smart bulbs, just have Smart switches? Would love to have some Home Assistant compatible Smart LEDs wirh Zigbee. Mine works with wifi and not all detected by my Home Assistant VM, although they are on same VLAN.

what a great video tom, you have such a productive setup and looks great. Like the idea of keeping the equipment out the room. I love the wallpaper you have, where you find that?

The pencil sharpener is from the old house that was torn down on my property to build my house.

I see all those power strip look pretty crazy, do you ever think about using a power UPS backup system for your network? Otherwise, a cheap off-grid inverter with a 100Ah lithium battery will do.

Hey man I was checking the best DNS options for 2024 and had really good results on DNS benchmark with "Control D" like it was the fastest other than Open DNS for me. I don't know much about it and couldn't find any videos on it. I was wondering if you could do a video of all the in-depth router options for speed/security/hardcore gamer lowest ping possible type setups for router settings. I have a aftermarket router and have my ISP's modem as a pass-through. I always try to browse through my router settings and would like to see a video of that in depth because some of the settings are pretty high-level and I don't really want to mess with them. All my cables are Cat 7 Ethernet too because amazon basics sells them for like $7. I like the idea of my cable being nice and comfy with it being 10gbs capable.

Beautiful studio setup. 😎 What labels do you use (wrapped around cables connected to your computer)? And are you printing them with a Dymo label printer?

They are the standard Ikea desk legs.

Interesting use of multiple capture cards have you had a look at the atem mini iso. I use it in my work flow with davinci and has saved so much time

@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS I have seen a few people use the atem mini iso as a back up recording and use it for switching then replacing the files with 4K video recordings as in davinci it creates a timeline

Pardon my less-than-intelligent question -- do you use the Elgato Stream Deck to be able to do screen captures as well (for when you are showing what you are typing on the screen) from your other tutorial/tutorial-like videos? Your help is greatly appreciated. If you don't have the video already, I would DEFINITELY like to learn more about how you are using Home Assistant to remotely boot and/or power-on your servers. I think that would be very useful.

Yes, the Streamdesk is how I switch between inputs and I don't have a Homes Assistant video yet.
